  1. @runaway - That's quite possible. The website I got the information from is LinkedIn and it doesn't delineate by jobs and what school. Here's the link if anyone wants to take a gander: http://www.linkedin.com/company/united-states-holocaust-memorial-museum/statistics I wouldn't say that there is an anti-Ivy bias, but like runaway got it - it definitely depends on the museum and that they probably hire previous interns.
  2. I feel like working in museums is way more focused on location than name recognition. One dream job would be working at the Holocaust Museum - which has almost no Ivy graduates. In fact, most of its employees are from DC schools - CUA, Maryland-College Park, Georgetown, GWU... maybe not all museums are like this, but that's what I've discovered about the Holocaust Museum.
  3. Thanks both of you - definitely prefer the Public History program over the MLIS program.
  4. I'm writing this *loverly* SOP and I'm hitting a block. I'm applying for both Public History and MLIS degrees. I'm trying to find a nice balance between library-y things, museum-y things and History scholarship. Anyone have any suggestions on how to balance this? I'm willing to message people my SOP if they want to take a look. I'm doing a basic one and then I'll add the "fit" portion once I get this down. Thanks ahead of time! I'm willing to look at other history ones as a tit-for-tat as well.
  5. Yeah, Oregon's uniforms are frequently ugly. Day-glo yellow is never a good option. BUT, I am a bit biased. My sis is getting her MA from Oregon, and I'm slightly obsessed with ducks.
  6. I think they're West. Midwest ends at Nebraska, Kansas on one side and on the East side, it's really iffy for me. I don't consider Ohio "Midwest" but most other people do. I'm considering UNC. My Dad's a Kentucky alum. He jokes we won't be able to talk during basketball season. I'm still going to be an Oregon fan because honestly, how cute is Puddles?
  7. Germans have a specific name for the identity crisis that happened prior to and after reunification - Mauer im Kopf (Wall in the head).
  8. I feel for you! It feels like the list of programs goes on forever for History degrees. I agree with figuring out who your favorite writers are in that subject. However, if you're looking at just MA programs (and to some extent PhDs), I would also consider location. For example: Two of the best schools in the country in my field are UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee. However, I'm doing my undergrad in Wisconsin and I don't want to spend any more time than absolutely necessary in that. I would drive myself crazy having two to six more winters and summers in Wisconsin. So those two schools went off my list, easily. Another thing I would look at is length of programs and if they're thesis/non-thesis. For some people, the idea of a thesis is terrifying and they would much rather take the test. If that's you (or not you) you can eliminate programs that way. I think, ultimately it comes down to what is important to you and how you define that. ^^ Hope that helped!
  9. Well, it appears that we have forgotten the Midwest. Sad, poor Midwest. We're too nice and polite for our own good.
  10. My favorite English professor is a product of UC-Davis CageFree, and he swears by the UC system. In fact, he was shocked I wasn't applying to Berkeley. He's also with you as to the beauty of the state. My undergrad is in Wisconsin and he's *not* happy with the weather.
  11. Thanks both of you! I think I got a warped perception of who to ask for LOR from my sister. When she applied for grad school she asked the three professors she knew really well and they knew her really well. But then again, my sister was a poli sci major with a habit of just hanging around near where the professors were.
  12. I'm a bit different because I'm Public History but, I'll throw my opinion in anyway. I would say go for the most specific thing first - environmental history I think in this case. I think there's more of a chance that you'll come across an environmental historian who is also interested in 18th and 19th century Britain than a cultural historian who is interested in environmental history. For example, I'm interested in social history of Post-Cold War Europe (super narrow, I know) so I'm looking first for social historians and then see if they're interested in Modern Europe. From there, that's where I get my list of POIs. Hope that answered your question!
  13. Thank you so much for this! I've been looking for something like this and here it is.
  14. How did you all decide who to ask for recommendations? I'm a History major and have a good working relationship with two History professors - one my advisor, one in my field of interest. However, after that I don't have a close relationship with any other professors. An English professor offered to write my LOR but I've only had one class with him. Is that bad/a problem? Is there a way to alleviate the not-knowing-as-much as my advisor and other History professor know?
  15. I'm applying for Fall 2013 - Dual Public History and Library Science. Seems like I'm going to blink and it'll be here. I am going straight to grad school after 3 years of university but I'm ready and I decided I can't feasibly do a year off. The only reason I'd do a year off is if I get rejected/unfunded everywhere I apply. I've been planning for grad school basically since I got accepted to my first college. I've now narrowed my list to the 7 I want to apply and have 2 out of the 3 recommenders in mind. My Personal Statement is slooowly coming along as well. What scares you guys the most about the process?
  16. Professor: Well, you'll get into 6 of your 7 schools you're applying to. The 7th school will just be an idiot for not taking you. But you should worry more about funding. Yeah, because I can definitely afford out of state tuition without funding. That, and isn't a *little* hard to get funding if you don't get accepted to the program?
  17. I always try to take rankings with a grain of salt. For example, this year the University of Maryland (College Park) is ranked 5th for Archives and Preservation in Library Science. However (and perhaps a big however), College Park is a hop, skip and a jump from some of the best museums in the country. There are more opportunities for internships and hands-on experience compared to #1 University of Austin. Well, that and they don't rank Library Science as often so this information is from 2009 for my field.
  18. Thanks OldDome. I figured it wouldn't be a problem but I've found colleges/universities to be so extremely picky sometimes that I still wondered.

A slightly pathetic question: How do you stand the heat? I've lived in the Midwest almost my entire life but a 5 year stint in Germany left me with an inability to deal with super cold or super hot. My experience with the heat has been mostly humid heat ranging in the mid 80s to low 90s all summer. Are most apartments air conditioned? Do they charge an arm and a leg for air conditioning? What do you all do to stay cool?
  20. Actual conversation one of my professors had about me: Professor A: Student wants to go and get a dual masters. Professor B: Oh, that's nice. How old is she? Professor A: She'll be 20 when starting her programs. Professor B: That's too young! Professor A: She is one of those students born at 30. I think she can handle it. ^^ I hate it when professors, parents, family, etc. tell me I can't do something or I can't handle it. If I did high school and college in 3 years each, I think I can handle this. Go worry about your own research (or lack thereof).
  21. Question - are you allowed to be a full-time grad student before graduating with your undergrad degree? What do you do if your offer is conditional of your last semester's grades? So here's the situation: I'm doing my last year of undergrad in Wales and their semester ends the 1st of June. According to my alma mater that means I'm a Summer graduate. Summer graduates are officially Carroll grads towards the middle of August. If a program starts before that, I won't officially have graduated from my alma mater. Thanks!
  22. Question - what would you do if you got asked to dinner with the PI at a bar and are under 21? Is there a polite way to say "Hey, I can't get into that place" without making a big deal of your age?
