I got my reading list for both of my classes this semester and holy cow, am I going to be reading a lot! Well, let me rephrase that. I will be reading a lot to keep my mind off things. The reading isn't required, only *suggested*. But it's a good distraction. Also, as much as I love you guys, staying away from the forums is also helpful. Or at least, staying away from the thread "Is anyone else losing their damn minds?" thread. :/

Good luck everyone! I'll have a proper cuppa and cookies waiting at the finish line!

My parents have always had a few unspoken rules about my life before I was even conceived. I actually think my Dad decided these and my Mom just nodded, trusting him.

    1) You will graduate from college
    2) You will graduate from a Master's program at the least (we want you to get a PhD but we'll start with a Master's)
    3) You will get married, or have a domestic partnership or whatever your state allows and your gender preference is.
    4) You will give us grandchildren in some capacity so my mother can buy cute baby clothes.

So the whole "no-kids" thing isn't a problem. That, and I'm barely 20 so I think they're sure they've got time.

What I love is my father is convinced I'm going to get a PhD when I'm applying to terminal Master's. Yes, at some point in my life I either want a law degree or a PhD but I don't WANT to think about this while I'm applying for Master's. So shh about that!

    Congrats on Johns Hopkins!

Everyone, I really did *try* to shift us a month ahead. But the area where the Rift is is under construction (go figure!) so I couldn't manipulate it.

One of my choices is to stay at my study abroad school for another year and do a one year British Master's. My best friends here at Aber know this fact full well and keep poking me with "So, you're staying another year, right?" Even if they don't say it, I know they're thinking it which makes it even worse. Thankfully, that decision SHOULD come within the end of this upcoming week. IF not...

    Deep, deep breath!

My last favorite has to be chocolate. Can't stand chocolate ice cream! Or anything with maraschino cherries because I'm allergic.

My news: no news grad school wise. However, I am officially done with my last fall semester of undergraduate! I had a lovely exam on War and Society in History in a *freezing* Sports Cage where I swear there were prison guards stalking the aisles who wouldn't even let you have tissues! Fine then...I'll let the professors deal with the snot blobs on my blue book. *rolls eyes*

I'm going to Cardiff for a few days where the rift of time/space is. Anyone want me to try and fast forward say, a month, for everyone and put us out of our misery?

    Gotta be the Nutella!

    I second the Amazon idea!

I really want to call South Carolina and say "PLEASE! I am going out of my mind!" But I don't think sounding like a derranged prospective student will help...

My flatmates are going to think me insane but I will definitely be doing happy dances for all of you guys as the decisions roll in. It'll be my exercise for a month or so, right?

I planned a trip to Malta for the first week of my three weeks of Spring Break as an excuse to have fun, relax and see a new country. My plan was to finish my senior thesis beforehand so I could purely focus on the experience.

But now I'm realizing a few of my universities' funding answers come out the end of March, early April. Does Malta have good wifi on the beaches?

We are all insane and I love that we're all insane together.

Submitted my last app today. My stomach was literally in knots (still is) as I checked over everything. It didn't help that I had to download a free trial of Acrobat, change a jpeg into a pdf and then reduce the file size, stalk a website for an address that doesn't like to be given... all as the last little steps of my application.

The stomach knots comes from the "It's my favorite school I think" and also they have the quickest turnaround in acceptance/rejections - it's around 2 weeks which is freaking amazing - so I know I'll know fairly quickly. If they don't want to tell me in 2 weeks, well, I'm here at the University now and while I don't know where the postgrad office is...I have google powers and I can find it! *evil glare*

But now I AM DONE with the application process!!!! *cue happy dance*

Welcome newbies! I would like to amend, for the record, that we are not *losing* our minds - we lost them a long, long time ago.

Congrats on submitting the application to Oxford! It's suppose to be gorgeous - or so people keep telling me. I haven't visited yet. :/

I got an email from one of my recommenders today saying sure he'd send me the letter but he doesn't really want to. I said, in the most polite terms I could manage, "That's fine. But you have to print it on letterhead, pay international postage and it's NOT what the school WANTS". We'll see how he responds. Hopefully with an attachment and then I can submit my last app. *sigh*

Keep our heads up fellow troopers!

First acceptance letter came in today! It's a Library Science School so don't everyone start frantically checking your email. Although I bet you're already doing that.

Even though it is lower on my list of favorites, I'm happy I got in somewhere!

@runaway - you go [insert gender pronoun of choice here]! It's probably a good thing that all your deadlines are close together so that you can just get them all done, wham, and then not have to think about them again until the decisions start rolling in.

I am DONE with all of my U.S. applications as Brown just got my $75 and the amount my parents owe on their house (is that really necessary to admit me?). It's a relief, definitely. Two of the schools I applied to have rolling deadlines so as soon as my LOR's come in, they'll make a decision within two weeks. Granted, it's the two schools I'm *least* excited about, but still, two decisions is a good start.

My last application - to the school where I'm studying abroad now - has a weird catch to it. It doesn't have that "Shoot out an email for LORs, they log-in with special passcode, etc." thing. Instead, I have to either upload, via PDF on letterhead, my LORs or here's where it gets weird write them in the textbox. I know my two recommenders trust me not to mess up their letter, but does anyone else think this as odd?

History is considered humanities, and even in poli sci, good quant scores are generally lower than in non-social science disciplines. Keep in mind, you are competing in GRE percentiles with physics students.

I still want my $125 back from Stanford. And Maryland should've lowered its fee for being the most onerous application out there.

Consider these application fees as "investment" to your future.

At this point I'm going through my statement of purpose. I have my writing sample. I have contacted all professors who have committed to writing recommendations -- they've all gotten back to me. I've contacted an historian who I did research for and she's also assured me she'll write me a recommendation. I've also got my GRE test date set up. Planning on acing the verbal and writing, yet super annoyed about the thought of doing math for the first time in over 6 years.

Right now I'm shooting off my emails to professors to see if they're available in the Fall 2013 semester.

Honestly, what's getting me through this is just sucking it up, applying to schools regardless of that nagging voice in the back of my mind telling me I'm "not good enough," and talking to friends who have already gone through this process.

I just moved to Wales to do my last year of undergrad abroad so I'm more stressed about the transition to Aber than I am about grad school applications.

    That being said...

I am terrified of writing my SOPs. I had a professor tell me that I had a really, really good shot at getting funding if my SOP shows/tells about all of the experience I gained this summer at NMAH. So, yeah, no pressure there.

My first applications are due December 15th. My writing sample (minus the one that needs to be 5-7 pages) is done and so is my CV. So my plan is to wait until I register for Aber classes and then schedule two hours a week to work on grad school apps. Because as unimportant as filling my address in is, it takes time.

    Hugs for all!
