Yes, our theory class will surely be a meet and greet ground I work with fairy tales. My favorite place to be is adult revisionist fairy tales (i.e. Angela Carter, Margaret Atwood, Oscar Wilde...etc.), but I've been known to dip into the classics and children's literature occasionally. That's going to remain my emphasis area (it's really the reason why I chose WSU). I also do quite a bit of work with feminist theory and have been branching out to film and media recently and hope to continue doing so. What are your interests or areas of research you are considering?

Yes, WSU English. Nice to meet you, too! I do have a car, but I plan on walking (maybe biking) as well.

    Hi

I'm headed to Detroit as well for a PhD in English Lit. Coming from Louisiana (University of Louisiana at Lafayette), but my homebase is Illinois. I was originally like "eh, scary" but I've been doing some researcch and talking with some friends who know the area and I don't think it's nearly as bad as people make it out to be. I will say that if you're not going to live on campus (I'm not), then you should probably live in Midtown. It's the closest to campus and all of Midtown is patrolled by the WSU Police (Midtown has the lowest neighborhood crime rate in Detroit). The theatre scene is really getting me excited. On the whole, I think it's going to be great!

Now THAT is a fair question. Sometimes the things people say make me feel a bit better about applications.

I'm going to Michigan next year but live and work in Detroit right now, right around Wayne's campus. You have nothing to be worried about in and around Greater Downtown Detroit (which includes Wayne's campus, Midtown, Downtown, Corktown, the Riverfront, Woodbridge, New Center, and the Villages). Detroit is an amazing city with a lot to offer. Some of the neighborhoods are pretty rough outside of what I mentioned, but the part of Detroit you'll be living is very young and thriving.

Hi all! I'm a first-time poster, but have been obsessively lurking this thread for months. As an experiment, I logged into the system using an outdated account that I set up once upon a time and subsequently abandoned, and can still see the Michael Smith Foreign Study supplement listed. It's meaningless!

I've been following this thread for a few days now. I'd like to say that given it is literally pretty much any time now that results will turn up in our mailboxes, I'm not sure why it matters whether someone may have heard something or through what means they heard it. It is entirely possible that they have now.  Further, without knowing how the SSHRC alert system or university notices work, or who knows who, there's zero grounds upon which to call someone a troll or be otherwise insulting. I mean, really, we're talking days here.

Thanks everyone! The other offer (from my top-choice) came. I retracted the initial decision within an hour of making it, however I haven't gotten a response from that DGS yet. She might be pissed, but this is my future, and as some of you rightly said, I had to do what's best for me. I did speak to my advisors about it and they encouraged me to make the decision I wanted to. I just posted on here in a panicked frenzy when they didn't pick up their phones. The CGS statement covers my decision, and I was polite and apologetic. I'm confident that I made the best decision for me.

Dot's no troll, ya noodles. I just heard from my school this morning (doctoral fellowship, yay!). You'll all be receiving your results shortly, I'd expect. And when you do, perhaps send some apologies to Dot, mkay.

The letter that I received was sent to a very select few. I’m sure that different schools have different approaches to doling out sensitive info. like this. I don’t want to (and I won’t) say more about this before SSHRC makes the results widely available. Just know that some folks are already celebrating or cursing their luck.

I’ve visited this forum for several months now, but I wasn’t inclined to start an account and post until I saw the negative reactions to Dotlock’s note (congrats Dot!). I’m no troll, just a fellow procrastinator. I hope that everyone receives their results soon, that everyone is successful, and that we all live happily ever after.

Also, we’re all adults, yes? Enough of the troll talk - we don't need that here. You wouldn’t speak that way to a colleague, would you?

I talked to my honours supervisor and department chair about TAships recently and they both gave the same advice: teach, but do as little as possible. When applying for jobs your work and publications will be weighted more heavily than the amount you teach. The heavier workload at WSU might interfere with your research. If you can get by financially without having to teach much you'll be better off in the long run, according to both my profs.

Anyway, just their input in my specific situation, so you may or may not find it useful. Congratulations on your acceptances

Wow, you sure typed out a lot. I am sorry to say, though, that I did my MA at Queen's, so I know most of what you said about the city and the school. The department has treated me well as an MA, and they fight for MA funding. It's currently ranked 4th overall in Canada, but as you said, it's not really that substantial because there aren't that many larger institutions in Canada.

I honestly don't feel envious or put out. I want mine TOO but, well, I knew going in that might not happen and that I would absolutely need to be ok with that possibility. I didn't allow myself to start the process until I felt confident I could be very positive and ok with it. I also have not unappealing back-up plans, discussed the possibility of reapplication with my mentors, and a pretty great support network.

Anyway, I am especially thrilled for the Wisconsin admits because I do know what it is like to want in there. Madison seems cool and I can only imagine how happy you all must be!
