January took forever and February is flying by. Only two more weeks till March!

I asked Tulane admissions when the DrPh should hear about decisions, this was the response:
As it stands, we anticipate all DrPH decisions for the Fall 2024 term to be rendered sometime in March. Given the amount of applications, I would speculate late March.

Just for clarification sake - Hopkins DrPH is still awaiting results. From past years, we'll likely know in 2 weeks.

Yeah, I want sure if maybe I didn’t get an interview post-application because it wasn’t necessary (I had 2 one-hour meetings with my POIs so maybe they didn’t need to ask more questions), or if it was an indication that something changed after all apps were in, etc. No way to know so I’m choosing to be hopeful!

Hi! I'm going to be applying for the DrPH finally this year for 2024! I'm actually only applying for JHU Health Policy and Management Concentration. It seems to fit best with my current schedule/career plans. Glad to be here!

Nothing on my end. But I was under the impression interviews were only given on an as-needed basis, per previous years. Anyone know differently?

Definitely doable. I spoke to a current DrPH student working with the Bloomberg Overdose Prevention Initiative Project last fall. She worked full time in addition to having a toddler. She initially thought that she would have to move a bit slower (only 1 class at a time) but was able to balance 2-3.
The program expects people to be working full-time really.

    Hey!
I know several people currently working full time jobs doing the JHU DrPH. It's doable. Their courses are online, but they have you come once or twice a year for week long intensives.

https://publichealth.jhu.edu/academics/drph/curriculum Go to this page, scroll to the bottom, click on whichever Concentration/Track you're interested in, scroll to the bottom, you'll see the curriculums.

I think this is really program specific. I had outreached to JHU faculty ahead of applying because what I want to look into is very niche and I really need to create an advisory team no matter where I applied (cross section of Intellectual Disability and Substance Use).
When I outreached to faculty at JHU, I was informed it was very rare. Most of the connections basically said "no" and dismissed any follow-ups. I did meet with one super helpful professor who introduced me to her team and connected me with regional resources.
I was informed that JHU has a matching process, so my outreach was considered unnecessary. However, on my end I thought it was vital since I did not want to waste my time and energy applying to a school if no one would be able/willing to work with me. For reference, I applied to Health Policy and Management.

Philadelphia is very doable, as are the Philadelphia suburbs depending on where you go in Philly. I've lived in Philly for 8 years without needing to drive. You have trains, buses, trolley, and the subway system. Is is very comprehensive. Most places are within a 20-45 minutes trip for $3.25 at most (one transfer).
However some areas routes just not great - for instance from NE to NW Philadelphia. It's a 30 minute car ride at most, but a 80-90 minute bus ride.

    Thanks!
JHU would really just help me develop the skills faster to move into a leadership role where I already am.
I need a part-time, online program as I'm a mom to a toddler, and working full-time for the department system of care change I initiative I hopefully end up the leader of in the future (once the current leader is ready to retire!)
I looked at a lot of programs I thought would fit, but one by one, it just wasn't feasible. If I don't get in, it's not earth shattering, but it would be incredibly disappointing as this is the perfect year professionally and personally to start this journey.

I've never done a Kira assessment. I have conducted and done a lot of interviews when soft skills are important. So my advice is to prepare the way to do for any interview. Identify examples in your life that exemplify the soft skill. There's an interview technique called STAR: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Where you describe a situation that occurs, the task required, any action that you specifically took and the result from that action.
If you want to use this method, and brainstorm/practice for interviews, start with the action step by writing down actions you've taken that illustrate a soft skill, You can then consider the full STAR around that action. For instance, I might start with "leadership"  - "when was I a leader?" Oh!: "I was told I was going to be an intern supervisor at the last minute" this ties to adaptability AND leadership! Then I build out well, what let to that happening, what action did I take (creating a structured internship experience including trainings, learning plan, etc., and the result (an intern who had both a great learning experience and created something novel for the company.
Try to have about 2-3 scenarios for a soft skill. That gives YOU options during any assessment/interview to tailor better to any question and be more adaptable on the spot.

In short, no. The one with the best department and connections were you want to get to is the best program for you. They all have specialties based on the research they're doing and the faculty themselves. Your decision should be based on that.

You should definitely look around. Counseling is not what you described. A counseling masters degree is less about abnormal clinical psychology and more about therapeutic techniques.

You can also discuss what you learned about yourself, and systemic problems you want to professionally address, as you went through the mental health system - how you learn, barriers to recognizing and getting appropriate help, etc. That can actually be a powerful personal story that shows a lot of appealing traits to the adcom.

Before I attempt to answer your question... May I ask, why a PhD, which is traditionally research heavy if you have not had a lot of research experience? Do you enjoy and want to work in research?

_kita got a reaction from hibiscus in Super nervous about my chances of being admitted. How did you all get through waiting on university decisions?
Job applications and other work responsibilities mostly. I was actively applying and interviewing for non-grad school back-up plans. I also continued reading academic literature within my research interests, etc., to prepare for academic interviews.
It was honestly easier (but by no ways easy) waiting for the grad decisions than company promotional decisions because there are more tangible career-driven tasks I can occupy myself with.
