Well, I think I might have been exaggerating a little bit in that most of the faculty were just interested in issues orthogonal to my research, so not necessarily a clash but more of being interested in questions that I'm not interested in, which isn't a problem. However, I'm fairly strongly anti-UG, which seemed to be the stance of most of the psycholinguistics faculty/grad students. Even this might not result in big problems if I went there because I'm not going to be doing acquisition, but it's still a pretty big ideological divide. But coming from a cognitive science background, I put huge emphasis on methodology and experimental design. I think everything about how you design your experiment has an effect on what you can infer from your results, but the faculty didn't seem to place much emphasis on rigorous experimentation. I'm not trying to put the faculty down, I'm just saying I have different priorities than them. They were all wonderful people, but I just didn't feel like I would fit in at all.

     

    I am derailing this thread somewhat, but there is a tendency for people to throw around terms like pro-UG and anti-UG without specifying i) what exactly about UG-type hypotheses they take issue with, and ii) how much the answers to that question has direct ramifications to the work they do. I think considering both is important to your decision, and I am also interested in hearing more about it.

     

    My two cents. Re: (i) it simply cannot be that you disagree with everything UG!  E.g., everybody--nativists and empiricists alike--agree that there is something innate, a hypothesis space, i.e. there are "priors" if we are talking in Bayesian terms. Re: (ii), I am of the belief that your personal beliefs about e.g. UG does not and should not constrain who you work with. It's often informative and sometimes more constructive to be around people who don't share these beliefs, as long as they are interested in arguing with you. Good advisors are able to work with and support even those students who are making claims that go directly against them. This happens all the time in my department. 

     

    I have, however, had experiences where people have been actively disinterested in the kind of questions I find interesting and important, and some that don't even want to give me the time of day because of their preconceived assumptions about my theoretical beliefs. Now that, I would find to be a toxic environment to be in as a graduate student. From my experience, people at UCLA don't strike me as falling into this category. Take Carson Schutze for example-- I am sure he disagrees with some or most "anti-UG" claims, yet, from my reading of his work, he takes seriously the authors making these claims. 

     

    Anyway, while the "ideological divide" you describe is a perfectly reasonable thing to be worried about, I am not sure it deserves as much weight as you seem to be giving it. Take all this with a grain of salt, of course-- just thought I'd share my opinion as a psycholinguist/acquisitionist who people might characterize pro-UG :)

  2. And I more or less mean it's a dying field because there is no funding. Sooner or later people will stop attending graduate school in the humanities and arts. Unless they are a married housewife. ;)

     

    I am rather confused by your last few posts. What do you mean exactly by funding? If you are talking about funding as a graduate student: the top programs in Linguistics all fund their PhD students, that means covering full tuition, insurance, etc. and giving them a stipend in addition.

     

    If you are talking about funding after graduation, that is to say, finding a job, then yeah the job market is pretty bleak. But that is the case for solid academic jobs (i.e. tenure track) in all fields actually. If you are interested in this, every couple of months, there's a piece in the Chronicle of Higher Education about the tenure system, what universities are prioritizing over supporting their faculty, etc. 

     

    If you are talking about funding from organizations like the NSF, then yeah, the non-STEM fields are at a disadvantage. But I think (among other things) that this is a matter of better communication between, e.g. linguists and the public about what Linguistics is as a field and why people should care about what we discover in our research. 

     

    Point is, there are a lot of complicating factors concerning funding at these different levels, but you seem to either be conflating them or not providing us enough information to disambiguate what you mean. And I definitely don't get why you refer to "married housewives"? Every way I've tried to interpret it, I am left thinking that it is offensive. 

  3. Ah! Maybe I misread it and it means that if I get that funding I'll be accepted - being international it's been hard to figure out what funding would look like at state schools

     

    To the best of my knowledge, Maryland is a state school that offers full funding to international students. There are some state schools (e.g., UCSC) that don't have a lot of funding for international students, so they often do not accept any unless they are somehow exceptional. But at Maryland, I don't think your acceptance is contingent on you getting external funds, so I'd rest easy :)

  4. Hi guys - I'm new here! I was the one who posted the acceptance to UMaryland - I got an e-mail saying I was nominated for a grant, and that nomination comes with an acceptance to the program... 

     

    I am curious as to what this means! Whether or not it directly signals acceptance, it's gotta be a good sign :) Note, however, that at the open house, most (if not all) candidates are still being vetted, so it might be good to be in interview-mode as opposed to accepted-students open house mode when you go there! In any case, congrats!

  5. I had a fifth recommendation letter for NYU, MIT and Harvard, and to be honest I only want to email them because I'm scared that my fifth letter writer said something bad. 

     

    I don't think this is the kind of information they would reveal, even if they were to respond to your email. 

  6. Guys, would it be appropriate if I sent an email to NYU asking why I didn't get an interview? I'm curious to see if there's something wrong with my application.

     

    I don't think it would be inappropriate, but I am also not sure you would get the kind of reply detailing what you needed to do to improve your application, or any reply at all for that matter. This isn't anything personal. Faculty members often barely have the time to perform the adcom-related duties required of them, it might be too much to expect that they'll spend their time explaining to someone why they were rejected.

     

    Who were you planning to email, by the way? The graduate director?

  7. That would be kind of an odd thing for them to extend invitations based on proximity. When I went to the open house at Maryland two years ago, there were a number of international people present (including someone from New Zealand!). Unless their budget situation has significantly changed since then (and I am willing to bet it hasn't), I don't see why they would change their policy.

    That's odd.. did you send them an email asking about the missed appointment? I wouldn't worry too too much, if this was a mistake on their part, I am certain that they will reschedule as soon as they realize it.

  9. I'll add another datapoint. During my application season (2 years ago), my phone interviews with both Maryland and UPenn were with two POIs simultaneously. When you are called down for an in-person interview, it is quite common to meet with a number of people (I met with 9 at UMD, which, to be honest, is maybe too many..)

  10. I am not a 100% sure about the logistics for international students, but I am certain schools will cover at least part of the costs. If you get accepted/called for interviews at multiple places, you could arrange it such that there is a single trip to the US, and use the combined funds from different universities to cover travel costs. Lots of international students visit during open house, so my guess is that sufficient help is provided to make travel cheap, if not free.

  11. So everyone, since most of applications where due today (well, I guess) and we are supposed to be a bit more relaxed (sure!) I was wondering...do any of you know how common interviews are in our field (i mean pre-admission interviews of course)?

    Should we expect one from every program we applied to? does being asked for one mean you are on a shortlist?  Is it just random? How do they work?

     

    From your list of schools: Maryland, NYU and UPenn do interviews. Unless things have changed since my application cycle, NYU/UPenn do phone/skype interviews and Maryland does an in-person interview/open house combo. And yes, it means you're on a shortlist--typically around 15 candidates are interviewed. MIT, and UMass don't do interviews. I have no clue about Yale, CUNY, Stony Brook, or Delaware.

    My point is: mentioning POIs from other departments is not going to win you any points, and runs the risk of making you look less focused. As others have already mentioned, having lots of POIs is not a very wise move to begin with. This is a forum where people help each other, but if you find our advice irrelevant, feel free to ignore it and move on. 

  13. This kind of raises the question: Is a full linguistics degree required typically to get a post-bacc position? 

     

    Technically, no. The degree itself counts less than the experience, I think. On the other hand, having a Linguistics BA or even having Linguistics courses listed on your transcript might tell the committee that you have the requisite knowledge about, e.g., syntax. In the absence of these things, you'll just have to do some extra work explaining why you are nevertheless qualified.

     

    There are some post-bacc positions in Linguistics that are quite competitive. The Baggett Fellowship at Maryland, for example, has excellent grad-school placement rates for Baggett alums, and consequently gets a lot of applicants. There are also a lot of language-related lab manager positions that open up in Psychology departments. Although there are more of these positions in comparison to Ling post-bacc positions, keep in mind that you will be competing with a larger number of candidates, since there tends to be a lot more Psych BAs than Ling BAs. 

  14. I know many people who start graduate school with a reasonable, but imperfect, command of English, but their English picks up quickly as they are forced to use it everyday.

    Whatever the case, someone's two-paragraph post on a forum isn't going to predict how they will do on the GREs, or how they will fare in an English-speaking graduate program. 

     

    That being said, the lack of funding in the MA programs you mentioned, Hamedtr65, is non-trivial. If you are set on going abroad for your MA, I would broaden my search to countries where they do have funded MAs (other parts of Europe, Canada, etc.)

  15. "Statement of Purpose" should be good enough. I don't think its necessary to have a header, since your SOP is only 2 pages tops, but then again, I really don't think this will matter very much. 

     

    Re: "thanking the committee," that sounds quite strange to me too. You want to end with a couple of sentences indicating why this particular school is a good fit (e.g., mention some of the people you would be interested in working with and why). But I don't think an SOP (at least for linguistics programs) needs to end with a salutation.  

  16. Hmm, I see. So, are you asking if would you need separate applications for the MA and PhD at the same department? I don't know the answer to this question, but my guess is that it will vary by school. In any case, a PhD rejection does not entail rejection flat-out. Acceptance rates for MA-programs tend to be a lot higher. 

  17. I don't think you should apply to PhD programs if you are unsure about what you would like to study. Besides being highly competitive, these programs take up 5+ years of your life, so it is not something to go into without some serious thought. Sure, there may be PhD programs that you might get into, but the job market for Linguistics is very tight, and even top graduates from top universities have trouble-- so you really want to ask yourself whether dedicating 5+ years of effort at just any university will actually be worth it.

     

    It is highly uncommon for linguistics programs to over you at MA-spot after rejecting you for a PhD. This is primarily because not many departments have independent MA programs at all. I don't quite understand what you mean by "ruining your chances", so maybe you can expand on that? 

     

    You can apply to MA programs, but these, unlike PhD programs, cost money, and financial aid for graduate programs isn't very great. I don't mean to sound discouraging, but just being interested in a subject isn't enough pursue graduate studies in that field. There are lots of things you can do on your own before making this decision. For instance, you say you are interested in psycholinguistics-- have you tried getting an RA-ship at a psycholinguistics lab at your school, or a nearby university? These sorts of things will give you a better sense of what doing independent research in Linguistics is like, and will leave you better equipped to make decisions about grad school. And you will also be a more qualified candidate if you do decide to pursue graduate studies.

  18. Short answer: No. No serious program is going to evaluate the quality of your writing based on your GRE AW score. 

     

    More nuanced answer: Certain schools use the GRE as a kind of filtering tool, such that they don't even look at candidates who do not have a certain score. UPenn, for example, has cut off points for the both verbal and quantitative section, but your scores on these are good enough to make the cut. I don't know of any school that has a specific cut off for the writing section.

     

    Rant (take with grain of salt): The GRE is a joke, I really have no idea what exactly it measures. Thankfully a number of competitive schools share these feelings, and don't even look at GRE scores. The AW part of the GRE is the funniest part of the joke- it tells you next to nothing about someone's writing abilities, especially not academic writing. 

     

    Your writing sample will inform the adcom as to whether or not you can describe a problem clearly, and argue well for your analysis. I wouldn't even think twice about retaking the GRE because of a 3.5 writing score.

  19. That is a fair point. But whenever I check out schools I always ask myself "Could I see myself working here for 5+ years? Does the University have everything I need to do my work?" When I look at UC Merced I see a department with some interest in Language evolution, but not necessarily quite the breed of language evolution I am looking for (I admit that might be being picky). But I also see a very new university with very little, shall I say, street cred, that is located literally in the middle of the desert (I am very much a northerner). Moreover, my work requires access to a dance community, and a large city can offer that even when the university cannot. Furthermore, larger universities tend to have a breadth of fields and programs that would allow me to find POIs outside of the linguistic department that could comment on my work Surprisingly many of the best minds working on language evolution aren't in Linguistic departments at all but in Anthropology, Experimental Psychology, or Computer Science departments.

     

    All in all I think selecting grad schools is one place where pickiness is essential for finding the right "fit," and I'd rather wait a year to re-apply, conduct independent research, or take a masters than begin a program I know I'd be unhappy in.

     

    Two things. First, it's not clear from what you describe as your interests why you want to do a PhD in a linguistics program, as opposed to Computer Science or even Cognitive Science. Some of the options you are considering are strong theoretical departments, and the adcom will certainly wonder about this question. If in fact linguistic theory is not so important to you, I'd expand my search to other fields. MIT Brain and Cognitive Sciences, for instance, does a lot of modeling of language (even some "non-traditional models", as you put it). But this work, as far as I know, is not strongly grounded in linguistic theory, but perhaps you will find it worth considering? 

     

    Second, location does matter. On the one hand, PhD programs are extremely competitive, and you end up not having as many choices as you may have hoped for. However, I think your intuition is right-on about considering "fit" in every sense, not just academically. Even things initially may appear trivial will matter. E.g., if you are a very social person, then it's probably not a good idea to choose to go to a department where your peers tend to stick to themselves. There were some great programs that I didn't even apply to because I knew I didn't want to live in a rural area for 5 years. Essentially what I am trying to say is, if you think having a dance community around is important to you, I'd take that criterion seriously. Graduate school can really take a toll on you and leave you feeling drained; I've found that having another (non-academic) passion can often be the saving grace.

    It's great that you've taken some advanced courses, and have a sense of what graduate classwork is like. Nevertheless, I think it will come across the wrong way to the adcom if you give a dissertation proposal (or even talk about dissertation!) in your SOP. I fear it will make you come across as naive and uninformed, or too inflexible, or both. During your graduate career, there are several milestones that you have to pass before you even get to write your dissertation proposal. And this is for a good reason! I second Fuzzy's advice about sticking with current interests. 

  21. I am a linguist at a theoretical linguistics program, and I don't know how to answer many of your questions--may I suggest the Languages forum for them instead? Here is the answer to the question I do feel comfortable answering: it is not a requirement for linguists to have a native proficiency in the language they are studying. For us, language is an object of scientific study, and we often rely on consultants for our data. That being said, a working knowledge of a language other than English can only help. I know people have said this in response to your questions in other forums, but let me reiterate that studying a foreign language has very different objectives than linguistics. 

  22. My point wasn't that I was applying only to tippy-top-ranked schools; it was that YoungR3b3l's assertion that they were "average" was simply incorrect. As I said, I put in many hours of research and talked to someone who is very knowledgeable about her field and the people working therein. I will say that reputation and placement record is an important factor to consider, given that professor positions are hard to come by and I do want a paying job after I get my degree. In any case, I've made a spreadsheet listing potential advisors at each of these institutions, and I've knocked off any schools--no matter how highly ranked--that didn't have what I was looking for or that put too strong an emphasis on facets of linguistics that don't interest me. Trust me, I'm putting quite a lot of thought into this decision, not just culling the ranking lists.

     

    You seem to have put a lot of thought into this, and your list seems pretty comprehensive. The only other one I might (tentatively) add is Rutgers. In my opinion, you absolutely should apply to the top schools that fit your research interests. There are more qualified candidates than jobs in linguistics, and the school's reputation and placement rates matter. I also don't think  that terms like "safety school" makes that much sense for PhD applications. I was rejected from a school that is lower-ranked, simply because it was obvious my interests weren't that great of a match. 

  23. Yes that's what I thought. In fact I am struggling between choosing literature or linguistics. I always loved languages but as I understand linguistics is really more of a scientific approach that teaches about languages- is that correct? I love languages more than literature itself but a.) I am unsure if I would really want to go for another MA, which most likely would not be funded and b.) I would really like to utilize my language knowledge- I speak 5.

     

    ALso on another note: I have been researching MA's and it seems the only linguistic related MA degrees I could find center either on applied linguistics or TESOL. SO if one wants to study for example Syntax, is this done at the PhD level?

     

    Anyway I really need to decide this soon, whether I should get another MA and then maybe PhD in Linguistics or go the Lit. route.

     

    If anyone can suggest any questions I should be asking myself in order to make this decision, please list here!

     

    I am in agreement with Fuzzylogician that before you decide to expend the time, money, and effort towards an MA program in Linguistics, you should probably get a bit more exposure to different subfields in Linguistics. This can be done several ways-- you might want to read textbooks on your own, sit in on Linguistics courses as a visitor, etc. There aren't that many MA programs in theoretical linguistics, but they do exist! Some that I can immediate think of are: UNC Chapel Hill, Univ Hawaii Manoa, CU Boulder, Georgetown.

     

    Deciding whether or not you want to do a PhD in something is a huge decision. You are essentially marrying the field. Sure, divorce is an option, but you shouldn't be jumping into it if you don't think there's a chance of this being a "forever" career. My advice: don't rush this without doing ample homework.
