I'm also curious when a good time to start contacting POIs would be. I was considering starting as early as the summer around July or August, but have gotten mixed feedback. Some have said starting early is a good idea if I know who I want to contact already, but others have said emailing before September may be jumping the gun a bit.

I would definitely start no earlier than September.

I'm sorry to hear that, but thanks for letting me know! It's weird though, I wasn't invited to the visiting day after my skype interview and I was pretty much told I would be rejected. Maybe they're sending rejections over a few days or something.

It was similar with me. I never heard back after my preliminary Skype interview with my POI.

This is a counselling program so I feel that they might have earlier deadlines but regardless I saw on the results page that other people received offers for counselling programs in April or even later. I just assumed April 15 is kinda like a universal deadline for these programs. Do you think it best to mention that I am waiting to hear back from other universities and funding? I'm not sure what the best way to formulate an email would be!

The counseling program is still CPA accredited (one of the few in Canada that is actually), so they really should be abiding by the April 15 standard. Definitely mention the funding aspect, and also ask about the CPA-mandated April 15 deadline (http://www.cpa.ca/accreditation/resources/). I feel it's valid to want to know about the funding beforehand.

to those who received offers of admission, was there a specified date that you are required to decide whether you accept or decline the offer? I just received an offer at Calgary and the deadline is March 22 which seems extremely close considering I have only heard back from one other place and still have 5 other universities that I am waiting to hear back on. Do you think its possible to ask for an extension??? I even applied to CGS for funding and I know that April 1 is when you receive offers. I am not sure what to do at this point!

I'm surprised they don't use the April 15 deadline that everyone else uses. I would tell them that you'll let them know as soon as possible and ask for an extension if you don't hear back before the deadline.

EDIT: Just looked it up, CPA requires that schools give applicants until April 15 to make a decision. U of C is accredited, so they need to abide by this.

Admittedly, I've been stalking the mailman through my window for the past half hour. As soon as he left my doorstep, I grabbed the letter from SSHRC. Looks like mine will be forwarded too! In the letter, it stated that this year, there were 534 direct applicants, and 251 applications were forwarded to the national committee. Best of luck to  everyone!

Well this is going to help my anxiety....congrats though!

    School: University of Central Arkansas
    Program: Counseling Psychology
    Date of Notification: 2/16/17
    Method of Notification: Email
Thoughts: I'm happily surprised. Interviewed via phone call with all the faculty at once which I felt was a death sentence for an acceptance. I wasn't super confident about my interview but I must've done better than expected! More than likely accepting since I can do forensic work! Plus full assistantship, what more can a girl ask for? :)

    Congrats!!

And admission depends on so many factors that have nothing to do with your specific skill sets that I don't think anyone should take a rejection personally. You have got one. That's the exact number of places you can say yes to. So say yes and congratulate yourself. You have done the (almost) impossible :)

This is so true. In my experience, there are a lot of political, behind-the-scenes, stuff that takes place to determine which POIs even get to accept students, so there are a lot of factors out of the control of applicants even.

Does anyone have any advice for someone who was just placed pretty low on the alternate list?

as if i wasn't already depressed enough because its valentines day this week :(

It's pretty much wait it out I'm afraid. There's always hope though! This happened in a med program, not a clinical one, but I know of one school who went through it's entire waitlist one year and had to hit up the people they rejected to fill the rest of their seats. Strange things can happen when you're least expecting them!

    Hi everyone,

I'm not an expert on this, but my program had interviews this week and I wanted to pass along some feedback. For the most part, I think the faculty were pretty happy with everyone. But I heard a few things. Examples:

An applicant who skype interviewed (which already puts you at a disadvantage, let's be honest), who barely had anything to say to anyone and no real questions. I'm hoping the person just decided they weren't into this program and checked out. Your interviews should definitely not be ending before the specified time because you don't have anything to say! This is a very bad sign!

An applicant who never interacted with any other applicants. Like at meals, social functions, etc. just totally kept to him/herself. Talked to program members only when spoken to. It's one thing to be shy, but seeming like you avoid other people is not good!

Otherwise, we saw a lot of people who interviewed really well and seemed really nice. The faculty in my program focus on research fit for the most part and quirky things here and there are fine, but when things like those above happen they can really derail someone's chances. Don't let that be you!

Best of luck to all of you!

I am that applicant who rarely has questions (oops)....mostly I've memorized everything about the program from the website before the interview, and generally only want to know about things like mentorship style/collaboration.

It's also really disheartening to hear that applicants who Skype interview are automatically penalized for it. It's just not always possible to physically get there for the interview...if you work full time.
