  1. Is anyone else trying to negotiate the Pratt system??

I received a two sentence letter saying I've been placed on their waitlist and now, after being passed around their phone tree, no one will tell me where I stand on the list. Today the vis arts chair returned my call (on my answering machine) and said they can not give me any information until May 1st. This seems inconsiderately late to me, especially in the wake of other offers and an April 15th deadline.

Does anyone know anything about Pratt's waiting list? Is it long? short? Is it broken into concentrations or is it a general "visual arts" list, since it seems they do not divide their students into designated programs?

I'm not sure what to do, as I've been offered a full ride at Tennessee and don't want to risk loosing that opportunity by playing my chances with Pratt's big unknown.

This whole process is such a gamble!!!

I am also on the waitlist for Pratt as of today. I got a two sentence email with the same May 1 timing and will get a written letter in the postal service. Does it make sense to call them or write them an email expressing interest in the program again? Or is better just to leave it alone and hope for the best?

  2. Yes, I will also try calling. I had emailed someone in their department a few weeks ago and was told that no decision would be communicated before April 1, due to the volume of applications, whereas in years' past, decisions were often send out during the 3rd and last week of March. I will keep you posted on what I learn.

I Just spoke with the receptionist of the ComD dept. I was told that the first batch of decisions would go out in 1-2 weeks, by mid-April. It seems that my application is still stuck at the admissions office and is still being processed. It's complete (i.e. nothing is missing) but it hasn't even been sent over to the ComD committee. So it looks like I won't be someone who hears back by mid-April and will have to wait even longer!

I was also told that they were inundated with applications and it is taking them a long time to go through everything. [sigh]

  3. She was just a receptionist, so she could just be wrong. She said it was because of the amount of apps they received this year.

You would think Pratt would know that other schools are asking for deposits for incoming grad students in a little over a week.

You should call. Maybe we'll get another (more accurate) answer.

The number to their office is 212.647.7573

  4. @MHDG Wow, up to 80 people are admitted to the Pratt MS Comm D program? From what I'm gathering from the Pratt admissions facebook page, the email system they use is a little buggy to say the least. So I wouldn't worry if you haven't recieved the email.

Their snail mailing system might be messed up too. A few weeks after I sent in my application and portfolio, I got three of the exact same letters in the mail.

Good to know about the email system at Pratt. I only applied to 2 programs because I have to stay in NYC and already got rejected from one. I've really got my fingers and toes crossed for Pratt. I want to call their admissions office, but don't want to seem too pushy.

  5. I got the "app is complete" email this morning. It said we'd have an answer by April 1st. Do you know how big their program is?

From what I can remember of the info session Pratt held last fall, they accepted 85-90 people and 75-80 people ultimately started in Fall 2009. The acceptance rate was 45%, so we can assume ~200 people applied last year. I hear that more people applied this year though. Still no email for me. I wonder what that means...

  6. Is anyone applying to the Pratt MS Communications Design program?

I applied to Pratt's MS in Communications Design program. I haven't heard anything yet...the suspense is killing me! The Results Forum has two posts from people who got an email saying that their "application is complete" and is being reviewed. Not sure if this means the review process is just starting. I hope not. I didn't get that email though. So maybe I'm already out of the game. Either way, just want to know now!

  7. Hello all - I applied to Pratt's grad ComD program and SVA's MFA in Interaction Design program for Fall 2010. Has anyone heard anything from either of those two schools yet? Any expectations for when we would hear something regarding interviews/decisions? I know the deadline is April 1....just wondering if someone has better information. Thanks! You're welcome to post other design school's responses here as well.

  9. An associates degree is generally for someone who does not already have a bachelor's; they award them at community colleges, generally, after about two years of study. It's possible that this degree is not designed for that, but I suspect that when people hear "associate's degree" they will not think that it is a graduate program at all. You're probably better off with a post-bac certificate, if you can find one in the area, or a graduate degree.

@teagnac & others - I've looked into the NYU SCPS's certificate programs in Digital / Graphic Design. Any thoughts on them? How are they regarded in the industry? Is this one way to effectively "steer a career change"? Or would I just be throwing away my money? Will I be able to build a portfolio out of this?

    Thanks again.

  10. Dialect, I have. I think the program requires a portfolio, which I don't have, at least not a professional one. Finding a program (good) that is both in NYC and does not require a professional portfolio has been a challenge. Which is why the Parsons AAS looked tempting at first glance. I am considering taking a series of classes at NYU SCPS (photoshop etc.) or Noble Desktop if I don't find anything. It won't be a degree, but at least I'll have some skills that make me marketable.

  11. That's what I thought about NYU's programs. I think they are just getting started, and have a while to go before they get reputable. I attended a class there one night and I was not impressed. I want to be somewhere where the professors actually want to teach. I also attended a class at Pratt. Maybe it was the course, but again, not impressed. The professor forgot some materials, the A/V equipment wasn't working. The admissions department doesn't get back to you by phone or email.

I actually found Parsons to be more responsive and organized, but unfortunately, the program isn't right.

I guess I'll just have to keep exploring, though I'm hoping to find something in time for a Jan or Fall 2010 admission.

Thanks dialect again for your help, your responses are much appreciated.

  12. @ Dialect - thank you for your detailed and balanced response. This is exactly what I was looking for. After reading what you wrote, it's clear to me that the AAS program is not what I am looking for. Thank you saving me the time I would have spent looking into it further and eventually visiting the school.

Do you have suggestions for good graudate programs in NYC? I'm interested in communications design, and with a finance background, I was particularly interested in learning more about and possibly pursuing infographics - marrying the analytical and graphical.

    Thanks again.

  13. Thanks for your response. I do have a question for you though. What exactly is an associate degree? It seems like the program is for people who already have BA/BS degrees. It's not a Masters - I know that - but how much weight do associate degrees have in the design world? Am I better of pursuing a graduate degree?

Do you happen to have any thoughts on Parson's graduate Design & Technology program?

    Thanks again.

  14. I was looking into the Parsons AAS degree program, specifically for Graphic Design. Does anyone here have any thoughts on it or is a prior/current student in that program and can give me their feedback?

I am attracted to the program because it seems to be geared towards career-switchers (I work in finance), it's one year-long, and seems intensive, which is exactly what I am looking for.

    Thank you in advance.

  15. Hello all,

This is my first post. I work in finance right now (6 years) and want to transition into the design field to pursue a career in communications design and/or design research. While I have a lot of the business/management/communcations skills, I don't have refreshed technical skills (in Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.) I have to stay in New York and have been exploring some Master degree programs. Here is what I have found to date:

NYU-Tisch: Interactive Telecommunications Program (MPS degree)

NYU-School of Continuing Education: Graphic Communications Management and Technology (MA degree)

    Pratt: Communications Design (MS degree)

Which do you think would be the best program for me, given my background and what I want to do? I'm looking for a school and program that is reputable, has good resources (especially in career services when it comes to finding internships and a full time job at the end) and a reputable and involved faculty.

I don't know any people in the industry, and while I've met with all the schools, I would really like an unbiased opinion. If there any other programs in NYC that I should be looking at, please let me know. Thanks in advance!
