Hi, Of late, I have developed an interest in reading literature based on posthumanism and bioethics, but being analyzed from the perspective of literature and not science. I am keen on knowing the names of some theorists in these areas and names of works that you would recommend by them. I know of Donna Haraway and N.Katherine Hayles but that's about it. I'd also appreciate knowing which universities in the US (both in the departments of English and Media Studies) are doing work in these areas.

Yeah, the funding packages and stipends are comparable taking into account the expenses of a big city. To be honest, Pitt's offer may be marginally low but they are giving me a fellowship the first year whereas Iowa wants me to start teaching from the first year itself

I got off the waitlist at both these places and now I must decide within a few hours which one to go to. I would sincerely appreciate any kind of feedback on the English programs of these two places since my preferences for advisors etc. are more or less the same in these places. I am interested in the courses on Post Colonial Theory and Weimar Cinema. Could you suggest some locations close to the campus or on campus where rent is cheap enough for a single tenant.

Somebody on another thread on this forum for Florida acceptances mentioned that all TAs receive subsidized health insurance owing to the graduate assistants united union. Is that good?

A fellowship of $10,781 for the first year and TA with a 1/1 teaching load the next 3 years after that. I cannot recall if anything had been mentioned about health insurance. I'd appreciate your feedback on this funding package in relation to living expenses in Gainesville, Florida.

I was informed of my acceptance and funding package when I called up the English Graduate Office on the 8th of March. Dr. Dobrin, graduate coordinator, had said an email would soon follow but I am yet to receive anything. Therefore, I can PM you what I *think* I understood of my offer as I was pretty excited and speechless and dazed all at once when I received the news and its been a while since then.

ETA: I mean is Gainesville relatively cheap in terms of transportation cost, living expenses etc.?

Can you tell me if its possible to live off the fellowship offered by UF in the first year and what's the teaching load like? Is Florida relatively affordable? The rent listings for the different graduate housing arrangements seem quite steep if we're not allowed to take roommates. I could PM you my fellowship offer if that helps

@ComeBackZinc I did but since I am an international student I don't know if the names of the universities posted here are well respected and the frequency of getting tenure tracks is standard or below average. Perhaps you could shed some light on this based on this link?

I am an international applicant and I have recently been accepted into the PhD program at University of Florida with a fellowship offer the first year and a TA for the next 3 years (I have an MA). My question is with regards to the reputation of the program in the field of English programs. I know it is ranked 52 on the US News rankings but I guess I need more information than just figures and numbers. What has their placement record been like in the last few years and those who have been placed do they generally get tenure track? P.S.: my area of interest is posthumanism , postcolonialism and the subaltern. If that is of any help.

@ sebastianteddy I'm sorry to hear of the reply to your e-mail. But looking at your signature one can safely say you've come up trumps this season and have some great choices to choose from!! I still hope UF turns out to be an acceptance for you and will be rooting for you!

Thanks @sebastianteddy and @mobydick Yes I know it has been a long wait for the UF notifications. I myself called them out of sheer desperation and was fully expecting to be told nothing of much use. Although Dr. Dobrin told me I'd been accepted, the pessimist in me wants to see the e-mail for concrete proof Coincidentally, 32 years ago,my parents got their PhDs from UF !! so this is doubly sweet for me @mobydick whereelse did you apply this season?

I called up their office and was directed to the grad secretary as well. She said she'd seen my name somewhere and I assumed she was referring to the e-mails I'd sent her prior to submitting my application asking her many questions. She kept me on hold for a while and I assumed she'd forgotten . She then came back and said she was transferring the call to the graduate coordinator , I presumed at that point that they'd lost my application or something. and...THANK YOU!! it's a great relief no doubt to know that I atleast have one acceptance I have still not received my e-mail from their office but I was assured that they'll be sent out this week.

I called up UF on Friday night (it was morning there, owing to the time difference) and was shocked and thrilled to be notified by Professor Sidney Dobrin, graduate coordinator, that my name was at the top of the acceptance list!! He further mentioned that acceptances will be e-mailed next week (this week) and explained my funding package to me. Really excited as he was very kind and forthcoming with the things the adcomm loved about my application and since his area is posthumanism too, he'd read my WS and loved it!! I'm guessing everyone will be notified very soon. P.S. they have an incoming cohort of 6 PhD candidates this year out of about 150 applications. Hope this helps

@HHEoS Congrats to you too on the OSU waitlist and your other acceptances. I know things are unpredictable at this stage. @HHEoS : I got my e-mail from Prof. Garcha this morning informing me that I have been waitlisted at OSU. However, he mentioned that the waitlist is unranked and I did not receive the PDF that you have mentioned. I wanted to confirm this news since you mentioned that Prof. Garcha has informed you of your position on the list. Shoul I e-mail him about mine after he's explained that it is unranked? Or does it mean that my chances of admission are low?

Once the decision status has rolled over to "Decision Made" could someone help me as to how I can view the decision on their ApplyYourself webpage. They asked me to wait one business day and I assumed it would turn into a hyperlink today but no such luck. Please help, the suspense is horrible!

Hello All, First off, congratulations to everyone on this forum who've received good news and to those, still in the lurch, well...join the club . I am generally a lurker on this forum but I find myself in a weird situation and thought of seeking the help of the gradcafe members here. I am international applicant to the PhD program in English at US universities this year. Pittsburgh U is one of my top choices as its a great fit with my research interests and the faculty and the program is excellent. Unfortunately, I received an e-mail from the DGS saying I have been waitlisted and further explained that spots may open up only if a sizeable number of admits declined their offers which seems unlikely. In a second e-mail she let me know that she may have "good news for me in spring". I am baffled with regards to the last sentence. As an international applicant, funding is very important to me and I have heard of very few assistantships and fellowships being awarded in the spring semester. I am also unsure if she meant the PhD program or the MA program. Does it generally happen that fall applicants are given admission in spring? don't they have to apply separately for that? also, I'd like your opinions on what do you make of this and how likely is it to have a positive outcome...
