MissMoneyJenny got a reaction from gellert in Fiction About Grad Students
I'm curious if anyone knows of any books or movies or tv shows where the main character(s) is/are (a) grad student(s) and it actually is a major plot point or something followed closely throughout. I know there is a lot of stuff about high school and college . . . so why not grad school?

And yeah, i know, because grad students don't have time to read, but I actually will next month!

I can recommend any of the Google phones (Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4 etc). They always come with the latest stock Android and you can also install any other operating system/Android mod on the them.

Additionally, they are pretty cheap. The Galaxy Nexus is around 300 bucks and should be enough for your purposes.

MissMoneyJenny reacted to sdt13 in Canada student permit processing time (International student in USA)
As an FYI, my university just sent this to all international students:

Please note, there is currently a strike action alert on the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) website. On Wednesday, August 21, 2013 the alert reads:

"The Professional Association of Foreign Service Officers (PAFSO) union is currently taking strike action. PAFSO union members responsible for processing visa applications have been walking out of offices in Canada and overseas without advance notice.

Posted processing times for both temporary and permanent resident visa applications do not take into account work stoppages. Anyone applying for a visa should anticipate delays and submit their application online as far in advance as possible.

To avoid delays, please submit a complete application. Some countries require additional documents that may not be listed in your application package. Find out if you need to submit country-specific documents by consulting the website for your visa office.

Contingency plans are already in place to ensure all offices remain open and are providing at least a minimum level of service. Priority will be placed on urgent humanitarian applications. CIC continues to closely monitor the situation.

Visitors, workers and students can apply online for faster processing. The Department aims to process applications as quickly as possible, and encourages visitors, workers and students to apply online or through a visa application centre (VAC). Electronic applications give CIC much more flexibility in moving case processing to offices with the capacity to handle them. If you have already submitted a paper application, please do not submit an electronic application as this will not speed up processing."

MissMoneyJenny reacted to Eigen in Not busy enough?
Being successful in grad school and academia isn't about being busy or immersed in work all the time, imo.

It's about learning how to do well and make consistent progress *without* having it take over your life. Some of that is learning time management, and a lot of it is learning how to say "no" to things you don't absolutely have to do.

You're setting the stage for the rest of your career and life here- do you want the rest of your life to be a sleepless, frantic rush?

Or do you want to make profess in your research, enjoy teaching, and still have time for your family and hobbies as well?

If you aren't comfortable with being spied on by randoms...don't put the information up on Facebook!

The person might well think it is more polite to have a discussion to your face about what's going on (since you presumably see each other every day) than leaving messages via social media. Isn't it kinda weird to be sitting in the same room as somebody but only "talk" online?

I think there are many types of jobs out there...some people work shift, some 12 hour days, and other 9-5 M-F. There are a lot of people who come home from work in the evenings and weekends and that's their time to relax. Having been in a relationship for 5 years with someone who was like this, I felt bad a lot of the time when I said "I can't do that this weekend, I have school work to do". For some relationships it's a breaking point, and for others it's not- and it does require managing and balancing commitments (in and outside of school). IMO, I think that in a longterm relationship it's a bit more forgiveable if you can't always give your outside of school commitments the same amount of time as your in school- your spouse, friends, and family normally understand. However, I think when you're dating and just starting a relationship, sometimes the other person might not be as forgiving...but it's not a black or white situation.

For me, I balance my time with work, school, friends, and family- with that said, I am often telling my friends I have to work, and spending evenings and weekends putting in time on my dissertation. I have tried dating a few times, and to be honest it was too much of a time commitment for me. I would rather spend my extra free time with friends and family then go on a date 2 - 3 times a week. It's not that I value it more over a relationship- but I just see my PhD as another relationship in my life.

It's certainly possible to date during your PhD and be successful! I mean there's tons of success stories on here. But I do think that for a lot of people, dating while you're doing your PhD is difficult- especially if you're dating someone who isn't in the same shoes as you. (It also might be that I am in a barren city...)

It's not just about talking about your day, it's also the understanding that when you're in graduate school there are many sacrifices- such as your time.

It's not that I think PhD students should always date other PhD students...I just think that when you're in a longterm relationship and you make the choice to do your PhD, your partner is accepting that there will be sacrifices and you might not be there. But when you're dating and starting out in a relationship, I think it might be a bit harder for a partner to accept those sacrifices. Not to mention the process of dating and finding someone is a lot of work! I think if you're on the dating scene, dating other students might be easier, as they are more accepting of your time limitations.

There's always exceptions, but as someone who is single- it's a legit concern for me that if I start dating someone they might not appreciate/understand the time constraint (and the frequent mini meltdowns pre-supervisor meetings)...

Maybe this advice doesn't appeal to you, but I'd say: for now, don't focus on finding someone to spend the rest of your life with. Just look for a fun night. Get drunk and kiss someone at a party. Once you get that initial 'Oh my god I have no experience at all' out of the way other things (like asking someone you genuinely like out) may get easier!

Well everyone, good news!  I was finally approved to take a class in my program!  So excited.  The director actually looked at my educational background and recommended a course for me.  Which is of course the one I am going to take.  She told me that there is an envelope in the office with my name on it which contains my permission letter.  So I am going down today to pick it up...and my Ph.D journey begins.  Not exactly the way I though it would be, but I am so happy...I can reapply while I take classes.  i can also get to know people and get an advisor.  My mentor at the college where I teach told me that once they meet me, they will want me.  From her mouth to God's ear.  So excited!  I don't usually do this, but I'm going to give myself my official....Wooooo Hoooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!

MissMoneyJenny got a reaction from Seeking in Canadian Universities' Ranking 2013
Macleans is biased, they give bad ratings to Universities who do not participate in the ranking system. I believe the Times Higher Education Ranking is probably the best regarded ranking system; at least, most Universities brag about their ranking on this site more than their Maclean's Ranking.

The top three on this ranking are generally considered the best schools in Canada anyway, although I have heard that McGill is slipping. Queen's is a lot of talk for their undergrads, I don't know much about their research levels. I know the University of Ottawa (my alma mater) is attempting to make leaps upwards in their research capacity.
I really have no idea how comprehensive these ranking systems are though.

Wow!  You have a lot going on don't you?  Conditional acceptances are good signs.  It will definitely be an interesting wait.  But it sounds like you are on the right track.  Try not to stress too much.  I am hoping as well that you will receive an unconditional acceptance.  Keep us posted on every little detail.

If the textbooks are not missing pages or otherwise defective/damaged in a way that wasn't apparent when you sold them, I don't see why you should even bother responding. The fact that she doesn't want the textbook anymore is in no way your responsibility.

MissMoneyJenny reacted to RelaxButterfly in Why do MLS/MLIS programs have such a bad rep?
Perhaps I used the wrong wording. What I meant to say was that some are considered more likely to prepare you for the library science market today. The ones I know of are UBC, Alberta, Dalhousie, Western, and Toronto. I believe there's also two at McGill and Ottawa that may or may not be bilingual, but I'm not even sure about their existence.

I was told by the librarian mentioned above that two of them prepare you very well (Western exceptionally well given its paid co-op option, Alberta as well but without paid co-op) but that one at a school that you wouldn't expect (Toronto) does not give you adequate preparation. Basically their "library science program" is really just a specialization in Information Science which, acccording to the librarian that I spoke with, can hinder your chances of employment in a specifically library field. She also mentioned that students of the program recently have said that Toronto is stating plans of changing the program, but she wasn't sure if that would help things or make them worse because she didn't know what these changes are expected to be. She didn't know too much about the other strictly English ones. I haven't done any research on Dalhousie, but I've looked at UBC and they have some interesting program options. This librarian did state that some of the programs are getting somewhat dated in their approaches given how digital everything is become, but she didn't specify which ones. Again, this is just one person's opinion though; I'm sure there's been many success stories out of Toronto.

There's only 7 schools in Canada which have Library and Information studies Masters programs, all of which are at reputable universities, top universities of the country even, so I'm curious about your statement about them not being up to caliber.
