I hold an NSERC PDF at a foreign institution (in the US). The Tri-agency Research Training Award Holder’s Guide details on taxation and the income source: "Postdoctoral fellowship holders should plan for their award to be taxed as income in Canada, regardless of whether they are held inside or outside Canada." The wrinkles will be specific to your situation (i.e., tax residency), but either way, you'll be preparing tax forms for both the US (state and federal) and Canada. I'm happy to answer any specific questions :)

Not sure what you mean by working remotely for that research? The SSHRC PDF would be supporting you while engaging in full-time mentored research at the foreign institution, under a supervisor.

    Thanks for this reply!

My situation is slightly different in that I would be holding the SSHRC at a Canadian institution while living in the US and doing a separate postdoc at a US institution. Basically I would be getting paid the SSHRC money through the Canadian institution, and then getting paid separately at my US institution. I would have US tax residency.

My SSHRC faculty mentor said this is highly doable considering SSHRC has no residency requirements and the only real expectations in terms of work completed would be based on her and my collaboration together. Meaning I could do my work full time at the US institution and travel to Canada during the summers to do work at the Canadian institution.

Hopefully this makes sense? It is indeed a very complicated arrangement!

  2. I got the SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship and an offer for a postdoc at a US university. I want to do both concurrently (with permission obviously), since SSHRC doesn't have any residency requirements, as long as you devote "full time" work to the research you're being funded for which is entirely possible to do.

My question is more along the lines of tax: Does anyone who has gone through this situation have any info on being paid in both Canada and the US simultaneously? I'm quite sure it's possible, as there's a lot of cross-border business people who get paid in both countries but wondering if there's any significant wrinkles for academics.

I am a Canadian citizen who would be working/living in the US on whatever visa I get for the postdoc and receiving the SSHRC while working remotely for that research.

    Thanks in advance!

  3. Sorry to yell about being funded and then run off... definitely echoing what others have said about it being a crapshoot.

As you can see from my profile I'm an old timer round here. I failed to get the SSHRC doctoral award twice during my PhD and this is my second time around on the job market after a lot of rejection both last and this year, so I've definitely tasted my share of failure pie. I also was on the lower percentile of those funded this year (17th out of 23), so I kind of have a "just squeaked by" feeling. Sending my solidarity to all who weren't funded this year... but also echoing what Boudicca said, that the funding is really so terrible that I'm having some second thoughts myself.

For transparency's sake and for future browsers:

Committee 1: Literature and Fine Arts

    Challenge: 5.02/6
    Feasibility: 4.90/6
    Capability: 5.01/6

    Score: 14.94/18

    Rank: 17/81

    Fellowships offered: 23
    Not offered: 58
Score of last funded applicant: 14.71

Exactly! I have a family. My current contracts dry up at the end of the semester. I need to know sooner rather than later how I'm going to pay the bills when May rolls around. Will I be doing a post-doc in a different country? Will I have to find summer work? I was just informed I was runner-up on an institutional post-doc, so there's a possibility someone will reject that offer, but I'm really holding my breath.

How many years post-PhD are you looking at TT jobs? My supervisor told me to teach a few years, get a post-doc, and then apply for TT jobs, but I also hear that adjunct teaching jobs don't do much to improve an application.

So much this. I'm freaking out because my visa expires in May meaning I may have to pack up my entire life, say goodbye to my friends of 10 years and move back to Canada with very little notice so I'd really like to have the next few months of my life figured out.

I honestly don't see a reason why SSHRC should take nearly 6 MONTHS to judge? This thing was due September 15, 2022!!

    For those still waiting:

    SSHRC just sent me this:

"We ask that applicants wait two weeks from the mail-out date for results before contacting SSHRC about receiving their results in an alternate format, to allow for any potential delays. If, by either this coming Friday or next Monday, you have not received your results package, you can request to receive your results electronically. To do so, please contact fellowships@sshrc-crsh.gc.ca."

Ugh so there's a possibility of one more weekend of no news. How terrible is this system...

Finally got the letter! 16.6/20. Committee 3, got a CGS, but will decline for a fellowship since I am in Cali.

Oh my god what a journey. Thank you folks for keeping me insane throughout the process. xx

    CONGRATS!!!

Edit: Sigh got my letter. Bad news for me... I'm joining the "preparing for next year" club! Congrats to all who got it this year.

You get mail on the weekends??

Yep, I thought that was USPS nation-wide...?

SadieLou and 1Q84, my mail arrived today! Awarded a doctoral fellowship! For those trying to figure out waitlist, my score is 12.89, committee 4.

CONGRATS!!!! So happy to hear you got it and it was good news :) Where are you located, again?

I'm so confused. I checked the mail, and there was one piece: it was Netflix junkmail. But my Informed Delivery inbox said that three pieces of mail, none of which were this Netflix piece, were slated to be delivered today. Could it be that junk mail is somehow delivered separately? Grr.

Hmm I just got my informed delivery email too and only two machinable letters. That said I haven't received it physically yet so will have to see if I just end up getting junkmail too!

Just chiming in to say--I got my letter yesterday/Tuesday (at around noon) in Southern California. I don't know what Canada Post is doing. Good luck to everyone still waiting.

What... I'm in SoCal too and got nothing yesterday or today.... ugh.

Why wouldn't SSHRC just email everyone and save on operating costs (e.g. paying for Canada post and courier - seriously)?

I'm starting to think there's some agreement on the federal level to use snail mail in order to infuse Canada Post with SSHRC funds.

Yes, I was hesitant to reapply to this committee after being rejected last year, but my research really doesn't fit neatly into any one category. I am firmly rooted in the "humanities" camp of WGS so decided to gear my SOP towards committe 1.

Ohh interesting. I didn't even know that was an option... mine is cultural studies based so I applied to Committee 3 but mine is pretty firmly in the lit studies tradition (though I had only video art in my proposal). Got thru first round cuts so maybe it'll be ok!

Now I'm really anxious because I've lost mail before in my apartment. I guess I can always email SSHRC to see what address it was forwarded to :'(

I saw the wrong address in my portfolio and I emailed on Monday and they replied right away confirming they sent to the right address. I'd check!
