  1. I've felt that in general, the sentiment among graduate students is one of stress and negativity. While obviously our career track is not an easy one, I just wanted to share the fact that I am really, really enjoying graduate school. This isn't to diminish anyone's frustration or pain or anything, but merely to add another perspective, especially for those who are still unsure of applying. I did lots of research beforehand to make sure I wanted to go down this path and carefully considered my options, and I think that led me to making a great decision. I get along extremely well with my advisor, genuinely love my program and my school, and am having a great time (and I'm now halfway through my third year, so this isn't still that first-year optimism). Grad school has felt like an academic playground where I get to test really interesting questions and work with really smart people. Like seriously, I love my job.

  2. I emailed them about the issue with the right margin, asking if they could take a corrected copy as my submission, since this didn't actually give me any unfair advantage. Got this response:

So apparently they actually know this is an issue with Google Docs.

Oh wow. So maybe you're still okay?? No automatic disqualification, that's good.

  3. For the research proposal, does anyone know if the title that we submit in the entry form of the fastlane application will be generated in the header (with name, ID, keywords) on our behalf for the reviewer version?

I currently include my title in the upload version... but need that 1 line of space!

I didn't include the title in the uploaded version either time I applied. Use the extra space. There's a reason they ask for the title in the application.

  4. still finalizing my personal statement ... cough

I am mentioning some of my key publications and presentations in my personal statement (as I'm sure others have), in a 'research experience' sub-heading. Did you cite these with a reference list at the bottom? I've seen this in some successful personal statements, but not all. If you chose not to, is this because you felt entering into an application form field these pubs/talks was sufficient? In addition to the NSF-generated .pdf's of our statements, do reviewers get a pdf generated from the online form?

    Thanks!

No, I didn't cite them. In the body of the statement I mentioned where they were published and what author I was. It seems redundant to cite and it's also in the application.

  5. Does anyone know how to resend the email with letter submission instructions (a reminder) through the fastlane system to a reference letter writer, in the past I remember there was an option to do so but I can't find it now. Thanks

I just deleted and re-added my writers and sent them new emails. Not sure if that's the best way to do it. You can also just email them yourself.

  6. Grades are back and better than I expected. Just about another week until the new semester which I'm feeling much better about since I have the first one under my belt. I had a tough time adjusting to a small New England city after having lived in big metropolises my whole life but I recently have come to the conclusion that I really love my school and everything is worth it :)

Best of luck in the new semester, y'all!

  7. Here are my two cents:

    1. If your program doesn't do interviews, you should still definitely go out there and meet them. I did that for three of my schools, worked really well in my favor. Contact your POI after application deadlines have passed (ie, January, February) and say you're really interested in seeing the campus and meeting them, and can they possibly schedule you in. Trust me, this is very important.

    2. Avoid the "kisses of death" in your personal statement. (Click here for more info on those). Your personal statement should only include things that are relevant to you as a future researcher. Mine outlined a distinct project I wanted to pursue, complete with citations.

    3. Do NOT accept an unfunded PhD.

    4. Here are the important factors of a program, in order of importance:

    • Research fit
    • Relationship with advisor
    • Funding
    • "Ranking" of the school
    • Location

    Best of luck!

  8. In my experience, your research fit, GPA, and letters of recommendation are far more important than the GRE. I think being in the 75th percentile and above is great, if you're falling below 50%, maybe consider retaking. Not sure what percentile your scores fall into, but as I recall, there is a table that tells you that.

  9. Hey guys, I signed a lease for an apartment on Canner St and Livingston. Just wondering -- what is the general reputation of the area? Good neighborhood? Had to sign from out-of-state, info appreciated.

  10. Hey guys. I had a question regarding housing I was hoping you could answer. How realistic is it to find an apartment with a lease starting in September 1st, preferably in East Rock? I am planning to stay with a friend for a few weeks in August while I find an apartment, I'm just wondering if a September lease is realistic.

  12. You can also look at specialized groups that organize conferences and see what schools/faculty are members. I am interested in evolution & biological anthropology, so I looked up HBES (Human Behavior and Evolution Society) and checked out their list of participating schools and departments. Super helpful.

  13. I just wanted to add no matter where you choose you'll always have second thoughts even a few years later like me? It's the curse of having multiple offers.

Ugh, this is my biggest concern right now. I'm not good at big decisions! Here's hoping I can be happy with this one.

  14. Hey guys. Question for everyone regarding moving in before orientation (August 19-28). If you are coming from out of state, how do you plan to do it? Come with all your stuff and hitch up in a hotel for a few days while you find an apartment? If so, when are you planning to get there? Also: what about all your stuff?! Halp.

  15. I received an email from Yale telling me to check the application website about an hour ago.

Also, mesoholic, re: the waitlist, at my visit @ Yale, they told me they don't put more than one or two people on the waitlist (at least bio.anthro doesn't.. last year they only had one person on the waitlist who ended up getting in), so that's not too bad of a position to be in.
