somerset got a reaction from Adelaide9216 in English as a second language + financial concerns for pursuing a PhD
    Hi Adelaide,
I am an international student pursuing my PhD in Social Work in the US. I got into two programs, one provided me with a stipend and tuition remission for five years. And the other provided me with tuition remission and stipend for three years. I took up the second offer and am in my fourth year. This year (my 4th year) I secured a fellowship and the school gave me a tuition assistance award that provided tuition remission and health insurance. I am also teaching since last summer. So, funding is totally available in the US for international students. It is just competitive since most programs take only one international student per cohort. Also, you can easily get hourly research work that helps you buff up your CV and also pays the bills. It can be stressful sometimes but it is totally manageable. It is just hard for the first 1-2 months when you relocate to the US, but you figure it out.
With regard to your question about English, I did not have the same issue. However, I know of other students who struggle with English and the school understands their situation. Faculty are also quite understanding. If you are already taking english classes, I think you should be able to manage. Every school has resources.

this is my second attempt....i am an international student....first time i applied to programs in sociology without having ever taken a socio course in my life....applied to 5 places..got rejected everywhere...this time i applied to social work which is what i did for my MA and have 3 years research exp...i had applied to 4 places and really wanted to get into only one...my dream school waitlisted me....then interviewed me via skype a week before april 15 and then said that they may have a spot...but a week later told me that there was no spot since no one declined and that they were trying to get additional funding but they have no word on when it will work out!!! thank god i got accepted to another school which is also a good fit with full funding....i wonder sometimes if i shd apply a third time to get into dream school! losing a year is super expensive though! and applications are a hole in the bank and your soul!

somerset got a reaction from Cesare in Waitlisted - waiting for your school AND everyone else's
I wish I had such an email! Lots of schools seem to work around the April 15 agreement. If you have accepted another school's offer and you get an offer after 15 April if the first school you accepted does not have a problem you can switch schools! And I dont think schools would want someone who wants to go elsewhere....plus funding seems to be a real issue this year!

I would say that you should not email them before the 15th. You dont want to be too pushy either, that might not work for you. By the 15th if you have not heard from your future advisor you at least have a ground to email legitimately!

In my own situation I have decided not to email the DGS again since she wrote to me the last time saying that she will keep me posted. I dont want to push too much. Besides I think my chances are over.

Wait till the 15th at the very least. Unless there is a job or another offer that is getting jeopardized in this process.

I have been a social worker for 4 years now and am now going to do a PhD in social welfare. every time i tell someone what I do they immediately first talk about all the volunteer work they do or the money they donate (like i care) and then are like "is this something you study? is it a discipline? you actually can do a phd in something like this?" and then the inevitable-people will list a range of social issues that I should take up instead of my phd- blatantly middle class- i often just say i do research- so much easier.

    Hi

I too have applied for PhD...in SUNY Buffalo, Rutgers, St Louis and Seattle. Got accepted to SUNY Buffalo but thats only because they have 4 deadlines and make decisions within 4 weeks of every deadline and I had applied to their November deadline....every other school i think will take until early March. The wait is killing no? And one wishes there were more people here applying to PhD!!!! So we could also share our experiences.

    Best of luck!!!!

Ah yes! I wrote to them too...and they told me I was not short listed! Congratulations to you! It seems like a good fit for you. In case anyone here is interested Seattle UW told me that they will decide first round by Feb end and then ask them to meet and then make final decisions....sucks! feels like its going to take forever...its pretty killing the wait....im now down to waiting to hear from just Seattle and Rutgers both of which I dont think will get back to me before a month!
