Mecasickle got a reaction from Plissken in Berkeley EECS PhD
Here's a website where Prof. Andrew Ng (Stanford CS) exposes how graduate admissions are usually processed:

Mecasickle got a reaction from Wicked_Problem in What should I do if I signed the PhD acceptance of one university, but recently got a better offer from another university?
I think jimmy_01 is right, if its before April 15th one can change his mind by writing a letter to the university.
Here is a link: http://www.cgsnet.org/ckfinder/userfiles/files/CGS_Resolution.pdf

Mecasickle reacted to Jacie_ChE in More than Prestige
I'm in a simmilar situation, considering turning down a top 20 school (in the midwest) to go to a solid state school in a better location personal wise (new england).
Both have interesting professors, and top 20 is giving me more money, but im starting to wonder if that's worth the stress I know it will put on my relationship of 5.5 years. I want to get a good education, but I want to be happy too. Balancing personal life and future prospects is a stressful decision.

Mecasickle reacted to thunderchunky in The "rejected" dream
I've had some crazy dreams throughout this process. I don't really see it as a sign, just a manifestation of anxiety.

I would reject someone instantly if they were a bad fit...and would tell them the exact reason. Not make them wait for 3 months!

Mecasickle reacted to uromastyx in MIT Decision
Come on, people are asking about the probability of acceptance/rejection. And everyone here wants to sugarcoat it. I believe people deserve better than that. If people have been accepted and I haven't received word, then I need to be realistic and accept the fact that I most likely (almost certainly) haven't been accepted.
I am new to Gradcafe this year and have tried to help people in an honest way, because last year I was rejected from every school that I applied to. I sat around saying, "I see people have been accepted, but I haven't heard anything. There is still hope." I would have appreciated some real honesty.
Regarding brand name schools, here's the problem:
People that have been accepted to the top two programs in their field don't need our help to make this decision. Nor can we help them with that decision. I find these posts insulting to everyone, especially the people who had hopes of such acceptances.

Did you apply to other schools?
Here's my humble opinion, not getting into MIT isn't the end of your development and growth. You can be strong in your field without studying in MIT. Lots of their professors graduated from other schools.

Mecasickle reacted to dat_nerd in Has anyone heard from MIT EECS?
There's a good number of MIT computer science decisions that have been emailed over the past couple days. With the number of CS acceptances posted with comments and stats, I highly doubt that they are spam.

We are appliCANs!
Take a deep breath, appliCANs. We've made it to February in one (or perhaps just a few) pieces.
Congratulations to all the appliCANs! You're experiencing something many people dread and ultimately avoid out of fear and anxiety. No matter what happens, we've already done the hardest part! Woohoo!
AppliCANs of 2013, rah rah rah! ♥

Mecasickle reacted to spacezeppelin in Minority follow up question?
I think its might be for funding as well. I few of the schools I applied to asked for "diversty statements". I asked what specifically they were used for and they said it was just for funding purposes. I dont want to get your hopes up either, but I think that might be a good sign. Asking that kind of question to applicants they weren't interested in seems to be begging for legal issues. It also seems like a big hassle, so heres hoping!
Obviously thats all just hopeful speculation. Fingers crossed.

Mecasickle reacted to RubyBright in Any reason a school would do everything but say you are accepted?
Maybe they want to make sure you can get the fellowship because otherwise they won't be able to fund you?

I would have asked if he knew because he was one of the rejected ones one year...

Mecasickle reacted to Vincenzo in What to do if a professor does not reply?
Eh, they get like a bazillion emails. I'm sure they didn't see anything as rude, they just don't have time to respond. And they'll convey their interest when it comes time to make interview invites and acceptances (you've got at least four more coming). You did a smart thing (which I didn't do) by contacting them - now you're on their radar and when they see your app they'll think, "Oh, I have an email from this person somewhere too." I wouldn't send another message right now - you'd risk them getting annoyed (and you might give them the wrong signal, in that they might interpret a second cold contact as desperate or pushy). Your first messages planted seeds - that's all they needed to do. So for now, you have the right idea in just letting it go.
