  1. Has anyone who has applied to SJSU's Counselor Education Program for Spring 2020 heard anything back yet? My admissions status has said referred to department for what feels like forever now!
  2. Hello!! So I am from San Diego, CA (SoCal) and am looking at some Bay Area schools including: CSU East Bay, San Jose State, and San Francisco. Does anyone know anything much about these schools? I've looked up all the discussions I could find but I figured I might open up the discussion to others with the same questions. -Are there any red flags with these schools? -How long do you typically graduate? -Is there any strong reason why one of these schools is better than the rest? I'm considering not even applying to SDSU because of how competitive it is. I really like a focus on autism and special education but I know we should be well rounded. My stats are: 151V, 149Q, 4.5W. Cumulative GPA: 3.84, CSD GPA: 3.79. I have 7+ years working with kids with autism, 2 years as a behavioral therapist, 4+ years observing/volunteering with a SLP at a school district, NSSLHA member, deans list x7, bilingual in Spanish, and I just got an ASHA volunteer position.
  3. Hello, I am probably a bit early to start this forum, but would love to connect with folks applying to SJSU MSW for Fall 2020. Good luck to everyone working on their apps!
  4. Hey everyone! I just wanted to connect with others who are also waiting for admission decisions for MSW programs; this process feels like it's taking forever! I applied to UC Berkeley, CSU East Bay, SF State, and am still working on SJSU. This is definitely nerve-wracking! Has anyone else applied and feels nervous????? Which programs did ya'll apply to??
  5. Anyone still waiting for SJSU MS Data Analytics program? My status is still "referred to Grad department" like forever.... I got a msg on 5/1 that "According to our records, your file has been referred to the department. At this time your application is under department review. The Graduate Admissions and Program Evaluations Office is not involved in this phase of the review and will not be able to provide any additional information about your status while you are referred to the department. We want you to know that we do not have specific updated information to provide because departments have a separate review process" just want to know if anyone got any news from them recently.....
  6. Hi all, still waiting to hear back from SJSU for there online MSW program. Has anyone heard back? I’ve read latest would be June.
  7. Looks like most of the schools I applied to start sending out news mid-March but the wait is agonizing to say the least. I don't even know if I can be confident. This is my first time applying and I am straight out of undergrad. One can only hope.
  8. Hey guys Has anyone heard back from SJSU HFE yet? or from UCI MHCID?
  9. Hi everyone! I know that there are people that have already hear back from SJSU's SLP Master's program, but for us that haven't... Does anyone know what's going on? Are they still sending out acceptances or is their cohort already full? If you have any information, please share
  10. I had a really great impression of CSUEB when I visited for their department tour, but I've heard a lot more about SJSU through current students and they had mostly good things to say about it. A downside to SJSU seems like the administration is a little unorganized. In addition, i'm interested in learning more about aphasia and it seems like CSUEB's aphasia treatment program is more established than SJSU's. Tuition and commute are about the same for both, so those aren't major factors for me (although since i'm an extended master's student, CSUEB is at least an extra summer long). A bummer about CSUEB is that they're very particular which courses you take to satisfy ASHA requirements, which means I'd probably have to take classes at a CC this summer, but I know that's a minor con and they claim that those courses maximize preparation to practice as an SLP. I would also very much like to eventually have a hospital placement and prepare myself for medical SLP, but I'm not sure if I'm more likely get placed in a hospital at one school than the other. Any input on either of these programs or other factors to consider would be great!!! Side question: i know that for clinicals i'll have to compete with my peers for the same hospitals, so any tips on maximizing your chances of securing clinical experience (or even a job down the line) at a hospital? i'd love to hear about people's experiences :))
  11. Does anyone know when we'll be hearing back from San Jose State's Counselor Education program? I'm an undergraduate, and I applied for their Master's in Education with a concentration in Counseling and Student Personnel with a Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) credential.
  12. Hi everyone, I have been waitlisted at my number one choice school... it's starting to get pretty dark. Please vent/tell stories about your waitlist experience or anything you have heard. I am waitlisted at SJSU for speech pathology. If anyone knows anything about it please feel free to share. Best of luck to us all!
  13. Has anyone heard from SJSU yet? I haven't seen anything on the results page yet and was just wondering when they typically get back to people.
  14. Hello! I am beginning the process to apply for the MA in Education with a concentration in Counseling and Student Personnel at SJSU. Just wanted to see if there was anyone else out there in the same boat?
  15. Hello there! I'm an out-of-field student (majored in History) who is looking to apply to grad school for SLP for Fall 2019! I'm currently looking at the following schools: San Jose State University CSU East Bay UT Dallas Northern Arizona University Marquette University Montclair State University Grand Valley State University University of the Pacific University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign Here are my stats: 3.97 GPA, Currently taking prerequisite classes and will have 2 by application, 161V/160Q/4.5W. I was a teaching intern at a literacy/creative writing nonprofit, worked at my college's writing center for 3 years, worked with elderly people at a safe/affordable housing nonprofit, was an AmeriCorps college access counselor for low-income high school students of color, and currently work at a speech therapy private practice with preschoolers. I'm also certified as a Registered Behavior Technician and hope to soon start doing ABA therapy at my current job. Is there anything else I can do to improve my application? What are my chances for getting into the schools above? Thanks!
  16. Hi everybody! I recently graduated from college with my BA in Liberal Arts. While I loved my education, I also am very interested in pursuing a career in chemical engineering. I'm taking several classes at community college so that I can apply to graduate programs in CA. My question is what programs are good in CA for ChE? Do I have a shot into getting into these sort of programs? Which ones are good coming from a non-engineering background? Is there any place like BU, which has the LEAP program, that makes it easier to transition? Thank you!
  17. I thought I create this thread for all SJSU MSW applicants and find out who applied, which concentration, and if they heard anything yet... My concentration is in mental health.. I have 5 years working directly with autistic children and currently on my 4th year in case management for children with developmental disabilities. My GPA is pretty low... 2.8... but I was denied last year for insufficient background.
  18. I got admit in San Jose State University for Master in Biomedical Engineering. I have few Doubts in getting enrolled for classes. Is anyone got admit or currently pursuing this course in SJSU? Can you please contact me ajithsept@gmail.com
  19. Hi everyone! Just wondering has anyone on the waitlist heard back from SJSU yet? They said they were going to send out the final application status after Apr. 16th and so far I have no feedback at all. I'm dying to know if they have already sent out or I just need to be patiently wait longer...
  20. Hey all! I just joined GradCafe, and I am so stoked but also nervous about the fact that applying for grad schools is just around the corner. Right now I am feeling so nervous because I know my credentials are not where they need to be. I'm graduating early in December, but since most grad schools don't do spring start and heading straight to grad school with no break would be INSANE, I am planning on finishing out my lease here. Then I'll be applying for summer and fall start dates at multiple schools. I have a few school ideas, which I'll state down below. I plan to earn a Masters in Social Work, potentially with a concentration in mental health. First, I wanted to give you an idea of my stats (no judgment--from the threads I have read so many of you have intensive experience and stellar GPAs :/ ): Undergraduate Degree @ University of South Carolina -- Experimental Psychology major with two minors: Social Work; Counselor Education GPA - 3.0 overall, should be closer to a 3.1 by the time I graduate (Yes, I know, it's low...it's not horrible, but if college had been a little less rocky I could have done super well ) Member of Psi Chi, International Honors Society in Psychology Member of a panhellenic sorority through which I have volunteered and participated in philanthropy events Was in charge of a philanthropy within my sorority where sisters help a local blind man with every day tasks This is it so far, however I have a few plans under my belt that I am almost positive I can follow through with: This semester I will be completing at least 45 service hours with a local organization that provides lower-income individuals with housing (definitely happening, it's a part of a practicum I'm taking) If all goes well, I plan to intern in Rome for 8 weeks with a social service organization this summer. I should be working about 20 hours a week. I plan to join Delta Alpha Pi, an Honors Society for people with disabilities (I have severe depression which has contributed to my mediocre GPA). I plan to get involved with the Undergraduate Social Work Student Association at my school. I haven't taken the GRE yet, so it could definitely still be a factor in boosting the impressiveness of my application. I am a strong reader and writer. If anyone has specific tips about the GRE, please let me know! ^^^So this is what I plan to achieve before I have to do applications (in the fall for the summer 2019 start, and in the winter for the fall 2019 start I suppose). For some reason, I have had a hard time finding paid opportunities/internships in the city of Columbia that are geared towards psychology or social work. I am going to keep looking, but the opportunities seem few and far between. That being said...what do you all think? What are some things you suggest I do, between now and the time I apply, to make my application as impressive as possible? I know I can't take back my GPA, but I can try to make up for it in other respects. From what I have read on here, those with low GPAs have been able to impress graduate schools in other ways. Again, if yo've got tips, let me know! Lastly, I wanted to list some schools that I am considering. I am going to rank them in order of my interest right now. If any of you know anything about these school's admission rates or have any specific insider info about a school, PLEASE contact me. I would love to get in touch with some of you and potentially ease my fears about applying for grad school! Here's my list: 1. University of Denver 2. San Diego State University 3. University of Southern California (the other USC...hehe) 4. Arizona State University 5. Florida International University and some maybes: Cal State - Long Beach; San Jose State University; Metropolitan State University of Denver As you can see, I really want to go far away and preferably out west (I've lived in SC my entire life). I am not sure about the admission rates of these schools, though I have heard that SDSU and USC are more competitive. I would love to hear thoughts on your experience with applying (especially to any of the schools above), selectiveness of these schools, my potential chances of getting in, and their quality of education. Thank you for anyone who actually took the time to read all of this!!! Any help at all would be so appreciated, even if it is constructive criticism. ~PeaceLoveSocialWork~
  21. I got into both San Jose State and Cal State East Bay (last minute on wait list for one of them!) for the MSW program and am having a difficult time deciding. I think San Jose state is considered a better school but I'm not sure. SJSU also has had massive budget cuts to the MSW programs and won't be offering any summer classes and limited electives. Any advice?
  22. Hi there!! Im waiting for decisions for fall 2017 for SJSU. anyone else here in the same situation?? cheers, autumn
  23. I would like to invite anyone who has attended or is currently in a Cal State MSW program to please share your thoughts and experience on the program. As an applicant, I felt there wasn't enough information out there to make a decision on which schools would be a good fit for me. Some examples of questions I haven't found many answers to: What kind of social work interests you? Did/do you enjoy your overall program experience? What was faculty/staff like? What was the internship process and experience like? Is self-care emphasized in the program? Did/do you feel prepared going into the field? Thanks for sharing!
  24. Has anyone heard from SJSU or know when we will hear from them?
  25. I am using it to track my application status... which still says "incomplete" but the only thing the the "to do list" beneath it, says "Document Submission ID form" and the status on that is "initiated." I have no idea what's going on or why my application is listed as incomplete. I tried calling my department but only got voicemail so I left a message but I haven't heard back. I'm so worried, the deadline is in a few days and I don't know what's going on. I'm debating if i should call again or just not worry about it since nothing else was listed. Does anyone else use the My.SJSU site?
