  1. MPH Chances and Advice

Hey all, I was just looking for some candid feedback regarding my application. I am about to apply for the Environmental Health MPH program at Harvard School of Public Health. I will have almost 5 years of international work experience by the time I would enroll next fall. I worked for the Peace Corps in Africa, taught in Asia and have been doing Agriculture research in Latin America. I graduated from small liberal arts college with a degree in Political Science I received a 3.29 GPA. I took the GRE and got a 161V/ 158M/ 3 AW I know that the writing is egregious but the other two scores should be ok. I do not have a ton of full-time experience doing health-related work. I work in the agriculture sector in Peace Corps and did some health education. I did a lot of nutrition based planning regarding farm preparation. With the exception of teaching my work experience has been tangential to health which makes me somewhat nervous about admissions but I think that I pull together my Ag work nicely with Health in my personal statement. My LORs are very strong and I have advanced proficiency in two foreign languages. What are my chances at admissions for Harvard's MPH program? What do you think that I should do to increase my chances if I would reapply next year? Recap: GPA: 3.29 small lib arts GRE: 161V/158M/3AW 5 years work experience; peace corps (agriculture, Africa), teaching private school (English, Asia), research (agriculture, Latin America) program: Harvard MPH Environmental Health Thank you in advance!
  2. I am trying to gauge admissions outcomes for the upcoming admissions cycle for MA programs in international development and affairs. If you could, please include the following information in your response: GPA: GRE (Verbal/Math/Writing) Applied: Accepted: Rejected: Waitlist: description of relevant work experience and other factors: Thank you!
  3. Hi, I'm a class of 2017 grad from UIUC's CS program. What type of schools would be a good fit for a MS in CS or Math or Stats? 3.00/4.00 GPA 170 Verbal 170 Quant 5 Writing - Internship at one of [Google, Apple, Facebook] - Full-time job in algorithmic trading starting soon at one of [Citadel, Jump Trading, Optiver] - 3 years of research done within U of I in the CS department, and at the NCSA (National Center for Supercomputing Applications) in HPC. I have one strong letter of rec I can get from a UIUC CS professor, and I could get more from my other research positions at school, but none that I feel were that great. What tier of schools should I be applying to for my MS? Open to and interested in CS, Applied Math, or Stats. May be able to join the professor I was doing research with at UIUC as a MS student in CS. Really quite interested in programming languages and compilers as a research topic - something U of I is very strong in. My strong letter of rec is from a UIUC compilers research professor. Thanks!
  4. NCSU CS vs Rutgers CS

Which one should i choose for MS CS: Rutgers, New Brunswick, NJ North Carolina State University,NC Which one has better internship and job opportunities??
  5. Oregon State University Fall 2017

    Anybody joining OSU this fall?
  6. It would be good to have a page dedicated to all the students of UMich. Hope we can all gather together here!
  7. Hi everyone! If you have decided to attend Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health in Fall 2017 (like me) then feel free to join the Facebook group I just created so we can connect with each other, ask questions, etc. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1527643387247818/ This group is intended to promote connectivity between students admitted to a Master of Public Health, Master of Science, or Master of Healthcare Administration degree programs at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health beginning in September 2017.
  8. Hello all! Is anyone planning to attend Harding University in the Fall of 2017 for their MA in Speech-Language Pathology program? I officially sent in my deposit a couple weeks ago and just wanted to see if anyone else was out there Hope you are all having an excellent year!!
  9. No one seems to have started a thread for this year's IU folks yet, so let me be the one! I'll be starting my PhD in French/Francophone Studies this fall. I haven't actually visited the IU campus and have never even been to the midwest before. I've been living in California since I was ten and did both my undergrad and my master's less than two hours from home. Before that, I lived in Hawaii. Needless to say, the whole concept of having seasons is a bit foreign to me... Anyway, any other IU-bound people here? Which programs are you in, where are you guys from, and where are you guys planning to live in Bloomington? What makes you the most excited, and what makes you the most nervous about starting?
  10. Hello M. Arch Applicants, I applied to 7 universities in Canada for Master's of Architecture for Fall 2017 and I have been rejected by 5 universities. My university is unaccredited and my grades are average. My question is should I lose hope and resort to looking for summer architecture internships and try again next year? This forum and admitted list is causing me more stress than before and I need advice and closure. ( I know I need to not look at the result list but it gives me a good idea who I am up against.) I want to know your applicant situations whether it's positive or negative and advise for what is the best way to move forward. Waitlist: U of Manitoba Rejected: Calgary, U of T, Ryerson, McGill and UBC Still waiting for offer: Carleton, Dalhousie
  11. Hello! After a long year of applications I've accepted my offer for a PhD in Epidemiology at JHSPH. Haven't found a forum anywhere for accepted/attending JHSPH PhD students to interact. Please feel free to start the conversation or reach out privately if you'd like to speak more. I did have one question- I couldn't attend the admitted students day today, anyone who went willing to share their thoughts? Thanks

  15. Hey everyone just got an email inviting me to a group interview for MSW program. Soooo nervous anyone can help out with what to expect ? I saw a couple of posts but they are so dated wanted to see some recent experiences. Thanks so much!
  16. Hey all! I really wanted to start an acceptance thread for a while, but I waited! Hopefully, it's around a good time right now to start one. I wanted to ask all of you macro/micro biologists on this site about what programs you'll be attending starting this fall. Starting with me: I'm attending USC's MBBO program~! I'm going to be a Marine Biologist. Where are you all attending and what program? Or what two schools are you deciding between?
  17. Since decisions came in, I have been talking myself into and out of my two top programs half a dozen times a day. I have the same arguments and counterarguments and feel like I'm no closer to deciding than I was a month ago. At this point it’s between either the emotional/gut choice of where I want to go (School #1) or the logical choice of where I think I should go (School #2). Background: I did my undergrad and Masters in chemical engineering before transitioning to a more bio-based research focus for the last 3ish years. I am particularly interested in pursuing a career in creating novel targeted drug delivery methods, but recognize that I don't necessarily have the fundamental biology foundation. School #1 – extremely prestigious school/name Pros This is a PhD program through the medical school, so there is a huge emphasis on translational research. One of the faculty (a very well-known oncologist and author) has guaranteed me a spot in his lab already. During our interview, he was very nice and described everything I am looking for in a mentor (level of involvement, how projects are handled, opinion on industry vs. academia). The project he pitched is a wonderful intersection between my chemical engineering background and biology. This project would expand on my previous chemical engineering focus but this time in a more biological application. This PI is also a practicing MD and recently began a biotech start-up, so I will be exposed to a variety of contacts and avenues for a future career. This school is in a major city and I would love to live there. I would be closer to family (both mine and my partner’s) than I am now and this area has much better career opportunities for my partner. Cons Due to my previous experience in the engineering area this PI is interested in pursuing, I can already see some possible problems that would scrap the project he has in mind, or at least make it very difficult. I have some reservations that the PI is spread too thin (between his clinical patients, biotech responsibilities, and his prolific writing) and may not be able to fulfill the role of mentor as well as my second option. I did a bit of digging into the publishing history of this lab and I am torn. This lab often publishes in high impact journals, but does so only as part of HUGE collaborations (PI and lab members are routinely 8th, 9th, 10th authors). I’ve yet to find a paper out of this lab with a first/last author. School #2 – not as prestigious as School #1, but is higher ranked than School #1 in terms of this particular program Pros This is a partnership PhD program where I take classes at the university and complete research at a separate research facility. I have already been working at this facility for the past year and a half, so I am very comfortable with the culture, co-workers, area, etc. My current PI has guaranteed me a spot in his lab. He is a wonderful mentor and I would be very happy spending the next several years working with him. The project he has in mind is incredible, and could have a resounding impact on drug delivery. This lab publishes first/last papers almost exclusively, albeit in smaller but not necessarily low impact journals. This lab will never hurt for funding and I won’t need to write a single grant to keep my project afloat. Cons The proposed project is based off preliminary data from the last two years that has yet to be verified that it truly works. If this project dies, I don’t foresee another drug delivery project in the future. As I am pursuing grad school to beef up on my basic biology foundation, I am concerned that the intensity and breadth of classes are quite limited compared to School #1. While I appreciate the area, I cannot see myself living here for the next 4-5 years. This area has very few career or schooling prospects for my partner, requiring a several hour drive to see one another. Any comments, commentary, and advice would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks!
  18. Harvard Divinity 2017

Hi everyone! I have not seen very many posts about HDS generally, and none in this part of the forum. I am officially going to accept HDS' offer next week and thought it would be awesome to start a conversation with other prospective students. How is everyone? Are you as excited to move to Cambridge and study with exceptional profs in an exceptional community????!!! What are you excited about? Afraid of?
  19. I didn't see a thread for USC, so I'll go ahead and start it! I'll be joining the Earth Science department in the Fall. Where are people planning to live? I'm considering Palms/Culver City since it's so close to the light rail.
  20. Hi, I applied to and got selected for the 1 year MS Bioengineering program at Stanford. Currently I'm weighing it against another MS offer from ETH Zurich (2 years, research based), and a PhD offer from Duke (Computational Bio.) The selling point for Stanford is the university's reputation and the prospect of moving into a job rather than a 5 year PhD commitment. Could anybody share some light about the reputation of the particular program, and how it's viewed in the industry? I'm basically skeptical about landing in a good place with a not-so great program, especially since it's just a 1 year thing. Since its not funded at all, I'd also want to keep that in mind.
  21. Stanford 2017

Hey guys, I thought I may as well start this. International student from Australia going to Stanford for Geological Sciences PhD this fall (2017). I am super excited! Can't wait for a change, a new chapter and to make new friends! Also, what are you guys doing for housing?
  22. Am I the only one who hasn't heard back from Brown (MCB)???? I was interviewed the first weekend and it's been a month since their second interview weekend. So I'm kinda just waiting around to make a decision. I got a offer at Washington State and they seem to be pushing hard for an answer but I don't want to accept without hearing back. Anyone else in the same boat?
  23. Hi everyone, first off I apologize if this is not the right place for this topic or if it has already been discussed. I'm literally brand new, made the account today. A little about myself, I graduated from my undergrad this past december from Appalachian State University, a small school in the mountains of North Carolina. I moved to Albuquerque NM to take a year off and build new work in solitude. My plan is to apply for a graduate program in painting this upcoming cycle. I am a little overwhelmed with all the options, and need some advice on how to REALLY research a program besides reading through each program's website and sending emails. I am really looking for a school that gives their students the direct attention we deserve for committing so much time and effort into a unpredictable business. I really do want to go to a school with a good reputation, but that's not my primary motivation, however, there is something to be said from having a good reputation. A lot of my work comes from my interest in literature and philosophy, which ends up having a lot of representational abstraction. Any help would be wonderful! If any of this sounds good to you let's stay in touch!
  24. Johns Hopkins SAIS 2017

I'm sitting here unable to focus on anything waiting for Friday evening to come. Figured I'd start a thread for other anxious applicants out there! So far I've been accepted to GWU, Texas MGPS DC, and Korbel all with varying amounts of funding but SAIS Bologna is my number 1 choice.
  25. USC MSW Fall 2017

Hey guys, I just received an acceptance to USC's MSW program for fall 2017 at their main campus (University Park). My concentration will be in children and family and I was wondering if anyone else on here will be attending as well, or has attended and can give me a little bit of info on the program!
