  1. Hello everyone! This space for people who’ve applied to/are interested in the joint graduate program in Communication & Culture at York/Ryerson. Priority deadline for Fall 2021 admission was on 15 January. Feel free to share your thoughts, updates and questions!
  2. Hi everyone, My application cycle isn't until Fall of 2021, but I've always been a planner, and with more time on my hands I've been looking a bit deeper into potential programs. As my title stated, I would ultimately like to go into the field of political communications, and I have a few programs I'm planning on applying to. I definitely want a program that is more applied, and where there are good professor-student relationship opportunities (i.e. just not a 'number'), and like the distance from FL to the programs I have listed. A bit about me: I am currently a Junior studying Poli
  3. Hello all, I just got my funding offer from Media and Comm program at Temple and it sure seems tempting. But I wanted to ask a little bit around since I couldn't see their placements. Anyone our there who can give me more info on the future opportunities of studying at temple? Best
  4. How good is Boston University's PhD program in Emerging Media Studies? Any insight would be helpful! Thanks!
  5. So I got accepted to FSU's online distance learning program for my masters in speech-language pathology. I haven't heard much about it. This is my first and only acceptance (I'm still waiting to hear from the others) Does anyone have reviews or heard anything from people currently in the program? Thanks!
  6. I was recently offered a spot on the waitlist for one of the top programs in my field. I was sent a letter from the dean of the graduate school via the application portal where I was asked to fill out either yes or no to confirm my spot. Considering that it's one of the top programs, they might not take their waitlist seriously (I can't imagine someone turning them down). But I would still like to send a thank you card to someone and show that I am interested in getting in even though the chances are highly unlikely. Since the letter was so impersonal, does that mean that they prefer to
  7. Anyone applied to the Communication, Culture and Technology Program at Georgetown?
  8. Hey Everyone -- I thought it might be nice to start a thread about campus visits for a few reasons. See if other folks are attending the same visit weekend as you. If you've already toured a campus give some insight and impressions. If it's an interview weekend, what types of questions did you/should you ask, what did they ask you etc. It would also let us connect on the same schools. That being said -- is anyone planning on going to UT- Austin's communications studies weekend in February? It's one of my top choices so I'm definitely going to try to go.
  9. Hey, guys, I was wondering if any of you know anything about summer programs in comms for doctoral students, either in the US or abroad. I'd be mainly interested in departments that research digital & social media, but this isn't necessarily a requirement (sorry if this is a repeated post, I couldn't find anything related to the subject using the search tool)
  10. Hello All! I'll be submitting to NCA this year and, since it's my first time, I thought I'd make a place for all of us to discuss the conference, any tips we might have for newbies (aka me), and just as a general place to let off some steam as we prepare our papers and/or presentations. Who has presented at NCA before? Anyone excited for Salt Lake this year? How long are presentations? Just how crazy is it really? Share anything about the NCA or your process you'd like! For me, I'm currently making the switch from Chicago Manual to APA format and writing my paper (it's outlined an
  11. If you were accepted to a university who offered you an opportunity to apply for a significant grant, and then for two weeks despite repeated requests has failed to provide you with the necessary materials to complete the application, how would you feel? The department has expressed great interest in me and been thoroughly welcoming, but the administrative failure to provide me with what I need has me balking at acceptance. This feels like a harbinger of things to come. Am I overreacting? Or is it fair to assume that this may well be indicative of a more pervasive problem?
  12. Hello, Can someone please rank or describe the following programs (strengths and weaknesses or pros and cons): USC Annenberg Upenn Annenberg Cornell Stanford Northwestern Thank you so much!
  13. I thought this would be an interesting case to share. Please feel free to share any comments or suggestions. Background. I had a pre-interview phone call with a POI over the weekend. I learned a lot about his research and the program, and he agreed that our interests and goals are a good match. Case. POI invited me to a campus visit and interview, but the date conflicted with another interview visit I committed to last month. I checked the gradcafe forum, learned that this is not uncommon, and requested a rescheduling of the visit. POI replied with something like "not sure" and "if y
  14. Hey all! So, I'm pretty sure this app season is a wash for me. One of the things I've discovered, though, is that many Comm programs seem to have programs that fit my interest. Coming from an anthropology background, I'm not super sure how to go about finding these programs. So, if you know of any programs that relate to my interests (digital communication, geek culture, gaming culture, etc) or a place that I could find a list of potential programs, please post below and let me know! Thanks so much!
  15. A question that applies perhaps to those that don't study the history of their country, i.e. studying American history as an American. As a European, I'm focusing on 20th century Russian/Soviet history. My contact with scholars from Russia recently made me realize how different their academic culture is from where I come (although I was prepared for it): professional careers, modes of research and writing, styles of publication and so. While language is totally not the issue, I sometimes have problems in sharing my ideas (say, how I'd like to contribute to theoretical debates on m
  16. When I decided to apply to Ph.D. programs, I had very little guidance and absolutely no idea what I was doing. I checked past threads here to get better ideas of what programs are out there/how to figure out where I stood as an applicant. I thought it might be useful for future applicants to answer some questions we know to ask when starting out the applicant process. Forgive my grammatical issues...having an anxiety-day. it's a lot of questions but that's because like, i am wordy and also i had alllll of these questions and more when i decided to apply. FIRST - You as an applicant
  17. I'm trying to finish up my application for Columbia's CSD program and do not know how to format my optional essay. I know I need to discuss my GRE scores (below par) but focus on how my GPA is great and I have a lot of volunteer/work/professional experiences. Should this be a blunt statement? Or should it be put in a nicer way like every other personal statement? Applying to: Columbia, UVA, UNC, Vanderbilt, Pitt, BU, MGH, Kean, NYU
  18. Hey all, Anyone willing to review the first draft of one of my SoPs? I can offer an exchange and/or virtual brownies. This is for a Communication PhD program.
  19. Hi, I'm interested in pursuing a Communicatins degree for my masters. The only course that appeals to me is the one being offered by Ryerson. I'd like to study in Canada. Are there any other good colleges I should take a look at? I checked out McGill, Albera and British Columbia. Any leads will be helpful. Thank you!
  20. I'm currently working as a direct staff support for a home of adults that have intellectual disabilities. I thought I was going to be working a lot on communication with them but that part is pretty much 25% of it. The rest I am basically a caregiver-- cleaning the house, cooking, helping them with personal management, hygiene, etc. I'm looking into other jobs. I got an interview for an assistant to a teacher at a preschool but I'm not sure if that will better my chances at getting into grad school. I'm kinda having second thoughts about quitting the job search and sticking with the one I have
  21. Hi All, I plan on applying for grad school in Fall 2018 to pursue my MA in communication (I plan on pursuing my PhD and going into research and teaching). I sent out about 6 emails to get in touch with professors I'd potentially be interested in working with. I built a rapport with 2 of them. One is at CSU Long Beach and the other at CSU Fullerton (relatively close to each other). I plan on visiting the area next month for a few days and I've scheduled meet-ups with the both of them. I'll also be sitting in on one of their classes. I want to build stronger relationships with
  22. I'm currently working as a direct staff support for a home of adults that have intellectual disabilities. I thought a majority of the job was going to be on communication with them but that consist of 25%-30% of the job. The rest I am basically a caregiver--cleaning the house, cooking, helping them with personal management, hygiene, etc. I'm looking into other jobs. I got an interview for an assistant to a teacher at a preschool but I'm not sure if that will better my chances of getting into grad school. I'm having second thoughts about the job search and just sticking with the job I have. I h
  23. Hi! I would like to seek advice on how to improve further my Statement of Purpose (SOP) to be submitted to the University of Canberra. I am from the Philippines and I would like to pursue a Master of Strategic Communication in Australia.I have read multiple blogs on how to write an SOP, but I would like to know on what would be the best approach. Also, here are the key points the agency mentioned that must be included in my SOP:- Your personal, academic, and employment circumstance in the Philippines;- Your reason/s for choosing to study in Australia rather than in your home country;- Your reas
  24. Hey everyone! I applied to some MA programs in Communication in Canada universities and has been rejected by McGill,UBC and Western. However, I still got no reply from UT, SFU, Ottawa and Carleton. I'm so anxious at this time. Wonder there's anyone applied to the same program with me?
  25. Hello friends so I received this from one of the school I applied to...do you guys think it's a good sign?
