  1. Hello All! I am starting the application process for MSW programs for Fall 2021. I am applying to a wide range of schools in CA, Boston, NY, and more. I created this post to discuss the application process, decision, stats and any insight anyone can share. Has anyone else stated the MSW app process? Kelly
  2. Hello! I’ve been doing my due diligence and research trying to find MSW programs and schools that have a macro concentration. Specifically with a policy specialization. I’m in NY and have been attending multiple online Information sessions so I could apply by the priority deadlines for Fall 2021. (I will be an Advanced Standing student) Through the postings on here I have read and learned that once licensure is secured, career options mostly depend on field work, volunteer opportunities and how well you’ve networked. I was hoping someone could offer guidance on their decision making if they have decided to go the macro route. Was field work opportunities/placement the biggest factor in your decision? Columbia is known for their policy program, but I just don’t feel any school is worth that price tag. I have meetings with Fordham and Rutgers that I hope will go better. any information and all guidance is greatly appreciated!
  3. Hey everyone so I started this thread because there was no thread for Fordham’s MSW program for Fall 2020 ... unless there is (sorry) I applied Feb. 1 2020 and am waiting now ~ to the Westchester campus. Let me know what you guys did.
  4. Hey ya'll I'm coming up on my senior year in my undergrad program and I'm getting confused on the difference between receiving a MSW versus a LCSW (clinical social work?).. does it really matter which I choose? I do want to be able to conduct psychological testing in my career so that's why I'm considering an LCSW but I'm seeing essentially no graduate programs available in that field. Is there a better option for me in order to become a licensed therapist who can conduct psychological testing? Thanks so much to anyone who can help! Ava
  5. Hi! Congratulations to all accepted students! I noticed that there's not a Facebook group or anything for those accepted and figured it might be beneficial to create a space to get a conversation going for incoming students. Any information that anyone has regarding orientation and registration dates is much appreciated. Please feel free to post questions or just say hi Looking forward to meeting you all!
  6. Hi, I am looking to go back to school for an MSW in Fall of 2021, I know I have a long time until applications open, much less need to be submitted, but I am wondering if I should start asking about letters of recommendation now? I graduated from undergrad in 2017 and most of the schools I've been looking into applying to require 1 lor from a professor if you're within 5 years of graduating. I was very close with a few of my professors (went to acting school so it's hard not to be) but, I've totally changed careers since then and I haven't spoken to any of my profs in years. I'm wondering when I should reach out, and what would be important to include in my ask?
  7. Hello so i graduated last year from college and took a gap year to figure out what graduate degree i waned to pursue and now i feel that after some time off i am ready to apply and am hoping to get into Fordham University for my masters in social work . I got my undergrad in health science graduated with a 3.8 GPA along with graduating with honors and being a member of the national scholastic honor society for health sciences. while working on my graduate application i wanted to know when it comes to writing your personal statement is it really important to use citations for a personal statement that i have been stuck for the past couple of days trying to figure out how to write my personal statement because i already know about the issue i want to talk about but am hesitating if it will be enough from my own personal knowledge. i also wanted to know will where i work matter when viewing my resume that at the moment for almost 2 years i have worked front desk nights for a law dorm. if anyone is in the process of applying for graduate school at this time can you share your experience of the application process and job background if its related or not.
  8. Hello everyone, I was recently notified that I’ve been accepted into UNR’s MSW program. I couldn’t find many recent posts about them so I made my own. Has anyone else went to UNR or been accepted there?
  9. Can anyone please share their impressions of the MSW program for clinical practice concentration at Columbia, NYU, UPenn, UCLA, Chicago, UT Austin and UM Ann Arbor. Perspectives from international students/graduates will be extremely helpful.
  10. Hi everyone, I'm an MSW applicant trying to decide between a few schools. It would help if I had a better idea of the programs reputation and the chance to hear from actual students. One of the programs (WashU) has actually been doing Q/A's on Zoom where prospective students can talk to current students, but thats it.
  11. Hello, I applied in early January for csula, csuf, csulb and csusb. I applied sometime in mid January for csudh. at csulb they said they could not review my app because after some supplemental deadline. I turned it in before January 15 though. I still have not heard anything else besides my application is in department review. I am getting more and more discouraged everyday because I have not even heard about an interview or anything. This is my second time applying so I don't know what will happen if I don't get in this year.
  12. Hello Everyone, I didn't find a form for CSULB School counseling so i decided to start one. For those who have applied to the program and feel comfortable sharing your stats, please do! Good luck everyone! GPA: 3.15 Internships/Extra Curricular activities: BBBS Org: Mentor | Fullerton College: Higher Education advocate | Orange County Community Housing Corporation: Academic Advisor | Human Services Student Association: Membership Chair I don't have the best GPA and know how competitive it is to get into the program at Cal State Long Beach but i am hoping that my internship and SOP helps me land an interview. Throughout my time in college, i have worked 40+ hrs a week, gone to school FT, and have managed to take on a couple internships. Currently, my application has been sent to the department and is under review. Once again, GOOOOOOOD LUCK!
  13. I am applying to the MSW program at U of Toronto this year or the September 2021 intake. In particular the 2 year program as I do not have a BSW. The admission requirements state that you need a minimum B+ in your final year, however transcripts are to be sent in by November. I contacted the department and it seems that the admissions will be based last year's grades. Last year I had a health crisis in my fourth year and had to drop some courses. I got to A's, but also a C and a D+. I did well before that year. Anyways, I am doing a fifth year with full course load. I am worried about my possibility for acceptance. I think I can do very well this year in terms of grades, but they will not get to see those grades. If you have any experience with poor grades in your previous year, but stellar grades in final year let me know. Iff you have experience with the admissions committee basing your admission off of your final year grades let me know. I would also like to know in general what stats people had if they were admitted or rejected to the U of Toronto MSW program from grades to experience.
  14. I am applying to the MSW program next year at U of Toronto. In particular the 2 year program as I do not have a BSW. 15. Just wondering if anyone applied to Cal State San Marcus' MSW program & if they have heard anything yet from them?
  16. Hey there, This is my first time using Grad Cafe, not sure if I'm posting in the right spot but I'm interested to hear from those of you who are applying for an MSW anywhere in Canada in 2018. What kind of work experience is most relevant? I've potentially found a job working in the registration department at the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario screening applicants from prospective therapists - would you say that looks favourable on an MSW application? Thanks for your input!
  17. Hello Everyone, Those of you that applied to Stanislaus State MSW 2 year and 3 year program have you received a response? Or does anyone know by when decisions might be made. Considering how the deadline was on the 1st of February thank you
  18. Has anyone applied to the MSW program at Stanislaus State? If so, any update?
  19. Hi! I'm making my decision as to where to go to graduate school next fall to get my master's in social work. I've been accepted to USC, NYU, and Columbia and I'm having a very very very hard time making a decision! I've received scholarships from NYU and USC, which help with the tuition, but by no means cover it. With all being said and done USC will still wind up costing me about 80k for the two years (before financial aid) NYU will wind up costing me 60k (before financial aid) and Columbia will be a whopping 100k (before financial aid or scholarship info). I want to focus on clinical work and eventually open a private practice working with adults. I currently live in Los Angeles and would LOVE to find a valid reason to stay here. I went to college in NY so I'm not entirely opposed to moving there, but I do think I want to end up back in Los Angeles to practice. Does anyone have any input as to which school has the best clinical program?? I've heard USC sort of churns out MSW students, but I think it looks like an amazing school. NYU also looks incredible, I'm just not positive I want to move back to New York, and to be honest I think Columbia is the lowest on my list because it focuses more on policy. So any input would be AMAZING!!! Thanks
  20. Hello, I am wondering if anyone plans on attending Ohio State in August or if anyone has attended the program. Would love to know your thoughts! Pros and Cons.
  21. Hey Everyone, As I am reading all the previous threads about Hunter for Silberman School of Social Work I decided to make a thread for those applying for the fall of 2020. let me know the process, how is if for you? I submitted my application 1-31-20- recommenders still pending but anxious to see the decision already.
  22. Hey everyone! I just had a question about graduate assistantships or fellowships offered at NYU or Columbia. At my current university I know a few graduate students who are MSW but they are doing assistantships with Higher Education. Does anyone have any insight about the process of locating such opportunities? I tried navigating the NYU and Columbia websites, but I couldn't seem to find any information. Thank you all so much!
  23. I was accepted into the 2 year MSW program at USC. However, I am concerned about the tuition cost. I was also admitted to APU's program, which is half the cost. I'll be able to earn my PPS credential at both programs. One is half the cost. I also read this article about USC's program in the LA Times, which is a little concerning to me. https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-usc-social-work-finances-20190508-story.html If I can get any feedback on either program (professors, classes, field experience placement, student resources), I would greatly appreciate it!
  24. Starting this thread for my fellow applicants to Case Western's MSSA/MSW program for the fall of 2020! Has anyone heard back yet? :)
  25. Has anyone applied to MSW Fall 2020 program at UH and heard back? I applied early in October 2019 and still have not heard anything yet (I am not an advanced standing applicant). I am going crazy waiting for my decision letter.
