  1. Hi! I just got into Villanova's psychology masters program for the fall. I am from NY and will either be completing my master degree in NY at Queens College or away at Villanova. This is a big decision for me as I have never previously gone away to school. I also didn't receive any stipend/finding as I applied too late. I know Villanova has a wonderful reputation as a university but does anyone know anything about their reputation in the psych world? I feel that having Villanova on my resume might help with my future applications to PHD/PsyD programs, but how recognized is Villanova's psych program? If I were to go, I would like to almost guarantee that I can get into a great clinical doctorate program since Villanova seems to have the research opportunities I need before applying. Any advice would be great!
  2. Hey y'all, So I'm trying not to obsess over the fact that two people already received acceptances to Villanova's MA program, even though the application deadline isn’t even until March 1st. I applied for the Graduate Assistantship – CASA when I applied for the English program, because the deadline for the GA -CASA is March 6th. I just have a couple of questions. 1) Why put the application deadline so late and, apparently, accept people before that? What does that mean? 2) Why make the funding opportunities have applications the same time as the program applications? Wouldn’t that just mean more work, i.e. examining funding applications for students that don’t even end up accepted to the school? 3) The major reason for my breaking down and asking these questions on GC: I just received an email from Villanova stating that all of my materials were sent in correctly for the CASA application, and that “We will be contacting you soon for an interview.” WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
  3. Alright, I need help making a decision between two fully funded offers. I've been beating myself up over this and just can't work it out by myself. Please, all relevant opinions are welcome! The two programs: The MA/PhD English lit program at UIUC (ranked #26) or the English MA at Villanova (unranked). My interests include gender and queer studies. And I'm currently interested largely in the ability of language to oppress and liberate people within these groups. THE CASE FOR UIUC: -Better ranking (I'm pretty sure I want to get a PhD elsewhere and UIUC might make it easier to get into a prestigious program) -Teaching Assistantship -Larger stipend in an area with a lower cost of living -Minor in Gender and Women's studies. -Option to pursue PhD afterward. -Self-proclaimed women's and gender studies powerhouse THE CASE AGAINST UIUC: -Giant school (might affect my experience as an MA student) -Less attractive geographical location imo -Despite having a larger faculty, fewer faculty share interests similar to mine. THE CASE FOR VU: -Smaller school, courses are limited to MA students (15 students in each course) -Gender and Women's studies certificate -More exciting area -Option to TA (eventually) -Faculty with interests more similar to my own (esp. Travis M. Foster) THE CASE AGAINST VU: -unranked program (rumors of graduates from the MA program having difficulty getting into a top PhD program.) -Graduate assistantship (with option to eventually TA. At UIUC I will begin teaching asap) -More expensive area with smaller stipend And I haven't visited either campus yet. I won't be able to until the week of the 4/15 probably, so I can't use that as a factor.
  4. Hello everyone! I am a journalist from India and have received acceptance letters from Emerson College in Boston and Villanova University, Pennsylvania. Expecting a few more responses. But, I want to choose from these two institutions. The course at Villanova is Masters in Communication and at Emerson it is Masters in Communication Management with a specialization in Political Communication. At Villanova, I can study the same subjects as Emerson. If anybody could help, I'll really appreciate it!
  5. I just thought I would drop in and see if anyone else out there is going to be starting at Villanova in the Fall. If so, send me a PM- I would love to chat with you!
  6. Hi guys. I have been admitted to two Master's programs and would appreciate any advice you may have to offer. The first is Chicago's one-year MAPH program and the second is Villanova's two-year MA in English. Chicago cannot offer any funding, however, while Villanova is offering a Tuition Fellowship (though no stipend). Part of my thinks it would be insane to turn down the opportunity to study at Chicago for a year and have access to top-ten faculty and resources, even if it means going into considerable debt for tuition/living expenses. That same part of me justifies it by pointing out that I would have a year after the MAPH to work, apply to English Ph.D. programs and defer those loans. On the other hand, it would seem fiscally much more responsible to go to Villanova. While I would need to work part time to defray living expenses, I would not be accumulating debt. I really like the faculty and structure of the program, but I don't yet know what kind of placement record the MA generates as far as Ph.D. applications go (working on that). Does anyone here have experience with the program? I would love to PM/email on the subject. Anyone else facing (or faced) a similar dilemma? There are other considerations (I know many people in Chicago and almost no one in Philadelphia, for example), but I'm mainly concerned with the prestige vs. payoff problem. Muchas gracias for any advice!
  7. I have applied for a Masters in English at Wake Forest and Villanova. I have been in touch with graduate directors/assistants throughout the application process and recently told them that I would like to visit the campuses and wanted to know if the directors or any professors would be able to meet with me. The Villanova director said she would be glad to meet and I am going up there on Monday for an informal meeting; no one has referred to it as an interview. I am also touring around campus with her assistant, who has been very helpful to me throughout the process. Wake Forest responded and said that I can attend a class, meet with and a professor whose research interests intersect with mine. I got the impression that I was being a bit of a nuisance by asking about a visit, but I would think that others have asked to meet with professors/students. I would just like to know if any English applicants/students have met with WFU/VU professors or students and how things went. I don't know what to expect from either meeting but I suspect they will be quite different.
  8. Hello all! If there is anyone out there familiar with the Villanova M.S. program, I'd love to find out what you think my chances of admission are. My stats are... GPA- 3.44 (3.7 in final 60 credits) GRE- V(167/710) Q(158/740) A(5) 3 strong recommendations 2 semesters of research experience 1 semester clinical internship 1 semester as a TA I didn't realize until very late in the game that I wanted to focus on social psychology, thus my extra-curricular experience is sort of all over the board. Any input regarding my chances or recommendations for how I might improve my chances would be very much appreciated!
