  1. Hi everyone, I am applying to Master of Social Work programs. I also want to be able to find some outside scholarships, in case I am not offered any scholarships. Where are you applying for outside scholarships? The only one I can really think of is the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. Any advice and help is greatly appreciated!
  2. Anyone have any advice to read papers quickly while still retaining the details? I'm mostly talking about scientific papers but this kind of advice can probably be extended to any field.

    Should i decline a Fulbright?

I just found out I got a Fulbright for all three years of my phd film program in Scotland! I'm so proud of this opportunity, but I also just got a promotion at my current job in a really great museum. I now get to work with films in a museum. I think i want to work in non-academic sector,/museums, so this is also a great opportunity to keep moving with my career. I think going to school would be great, but i worry about giving up my great job. I can't defer the scholarship nor can I come back to my job. I also just moved in with my girlfriend. What should i do? Thanks!!
  4. Hey guys! I was just wondering, if I have published articles in my undergraduate college's college journal or my own department's journal, can I mention it in my resume for my Master's as past publications or would a publication per se only count in terms of news papers, online journals and other established platforms. Also, have any of you mentioned your undergraduate publications in your resume for the Master's? And if you have any recommendations for a good online journal which may accept articles from Undergraduate students? Maybe one you've been published with? Thank you for your guidance!
  5. Hi folks, I am in a situation where I may either graduate in Spring/Summer 2017 (lack of funding), or in Spring/Summer 2018 (if secure a dissertation fellowship). Since neither alumni from my lab nor alumni from my program (STEM) typically go into academia to be a postdoc, I would like to know at what point of time should I do such or certain things, so that I can ultimately getting a post-doctoral research position that I want, presumably at the beginning of a Fall semester/quarter or as soon as I fulfilled all the requirements that complete my program. I think that inputs from those who are graduating / graduated from grad school can be gathered and combined into a "timeline", so that future viewers/readers of the forum can use it as a guidance. I would assumed that the first step is when "you about to start / started writing your dissertation", or "meet individuals / POI who you wanted to work for as a postdoc". Many thanks in advance! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - [If necessary] The summer before graduation -- prepare research and/or teaching statement(s) - July-December the year before graduation -- apply post-doctoral research fellowship(s)
  6. Hi all, Before I jump into my questions, I'd like to give some information on my general background. I am from Turkey, and going to graduate from History department next year, or maybe sooner. I have a major interest in Middle Eastern History, and want to persue an academic career in the field. However, surprisingly so, History departments in my city(Ankara) are not the best in the field. There is a Middle Eastern Studies department in my school which seems to me as the best option to train myself on the field. So, my questions are: 1) Does a Master's degree from Middle Eastern Studies have some disadvantages-in terms of career opportunities- compared to one from a History department? If so, what are those? 2) Would it lessen my chances if I apply for Phd in History? I would really appreciate if some of you with experience in the field would answer these questions. Thanks in advance!
