  1. Wanted to start a thread for anyone who applied to an interdisciplinary or "combined" African American studies & Film/Media/Cinema studies program ...or are looking to minor in African American studies/incorporate African American history and culture into a Film/Media/Cinema studies PhD program.
  2. I'm currently applying for Phd programs in media studies. I noticed on some applications they ask for a writing sample, however I don't actually have any current research articles to submit. I did complete a Master program, where I did a short documentary as my research thesis vs a full length thesis paper. So my question is what should I do to complete the writing sample portion of my application? Also are there any tips anyone has for ways that I can make a strong application. I currently have a BA in TV Production, an MS in Journalism and several years of media and teaching experience in tv
  3. Are there others who are considering applying to any of these programs for admission in the fall of 2017? I am mostly concentrated in the field of education, but have been contemplating applying to a strictly Af Am studies program. Many of the top programs however, do not cross-register with education and/or do not have educational departments at all. While I have taken courses in the more common areas - Sociology, History, Anthro, History of Art, etc. - and excelled in them, they are not my primary area of focus. Does anyone have any suggestions as to whether I should apply or consider strict
  4. Anyone else out there applying to an AfAm Ph.D program for Fall of 2012? Which programs did you apply to, and how are you surviving the wait? I applied to Northwestern, Yale and Brown AfAm, and then a bunch of interdisciplinary programs, most of which seemed like a good fit (I use "good" loosely! ). I don't think my chances are so high at the Ivy's but I figured it was worth a try!
