  1. Hey everyone, I´m currently analyzing my research data and am a bit confused about the diagrams based on my multiple-choice questions results. I´ve attached an example, where you can see my group "Acrobats". When I add all of the % together, they exceed 100%. Is it supposed to be like this? Or is there any way to somehow convert them in a way, so that when you add the % all together they don´t exceed 100%? Thanks in advance!
  2. Issue task A nation require all of its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college. Response:- Nation's development and future are in the hands of future. Students are the bedrock of nation's strength and its future. Students decide the growth and prospersity of nation. In order to increase nation's growth, the character and behavior of students must be shaped right from the start. Students around the nation should study under one curriculum to develop a more centralised and broaden base. One National curriculum will expose students to a fair peer competition. When all the students study under one umbrella, they tend to deviate less to irrelevent material. If the curriculums are different, students might develop complex due to anomalies in study content. With different curriculums, there is a possibility that teachers tend to get confounded with the different patterns. With unanimuous curriculum, the pedagogy will be more effective and will chaff out the immaterialised content. The one curriculum until college will also help testing agencies to conduct the examinations centrally and develop a more robust system. The institutions can be ranked according to their performances in the centralised system, so that parents can choose between the best platforms. The associated cost of study material, teaching, infrastructute costs etc. will significantly reduce, otherwise spurge with more than one curriculum. If a student performs below par or doesn't able to score and compete as efficiently with its peer, parents will have opportunities to find out the mistakes and rectify them. Students will able to introspect better about the things, as they can easily discussed their shortcomings and strengths. Grasp in power of students will be enhanced under the one curriculum as they prolonged exposure. Under bi or poly curriculums, the examinations may become eccentric which only adds to the costs and misery as a nation. Considering diverse nature of nations, it may difficult for students of different cultures and backgrounds to grasp and prosper under a different system, but till college they will be accustomed to the demands and will help them in long run to contribute to the Nation's growth and future.

  4. Hi all. Tired of waiting for graduate committees’ decisions I estimated decision timelines myself based on gradcafe data. For each university and program in albums below you will find three graphs: Decision timeline as a cumulative sum of decisions (accept, reject, interview, waitlist) as a function of time between Jan 1 and May 1 for the last five years combined. Boxplots of GRE Q and GRE V for people who reported both scores. Histogram of GPAs (from 2.5 to 4.0 with 0.1 step). I used this data to decrease my own misery. Now that I know decision timelines of universities and programs I applied to, I can refresh gradcafe less and concentrate on more useful stuff more. Also, it is interesting to explore differences between different universities/programs. For example, some universities do gradual accepts rejects/accepts and others do it in waves. Some programs start early (chemistry) and some — later (CS). Keep in mind, that there may be errors in my analysis so use this data at your own risk. How reliable are timelines? I personally trust them (but I am biased). In general, it depends on curve shapes and available data. If there are more than 100 observations overall — I would consider that data to be pretty reliable. If there are characteristic ‘steps’ — it is a good sign because may indicate internal deadlines for waves of accepts/rejects. But the number of admissions/rejections records in the data is definitely inflated by question records (i.e. ‘to poster below: what program?”). I filtered some, but definitely not all of them. Also, bear in mind that department policies can change. How reliable are GRE/GPA? Somewhat reliable. There is noise, mistakes (i.e. switched Q/V) and self-report bias. For example, salty people with good scores may more likely report rejections and lucky people with low GPAs may less likely report accepts. But for some universities which publish admission statistics (for example, Duke), calculated GRE/GPA medians are pretty close to reported averages (I didn’t calculate means, sorry). Also, we can’t affect GPA/GRE right now, so it is mostly for entertainment. How did you do it? Scraped and parsed all gradcafe results. Selected all records from Jan 1 2013 to May 1 2017 and combined data for all years together, so all data is based on five year period. For each university and program in question I built a cumulative sum of decisions as a function of days since beginning of the year. For analysis of GRE I only chose records which included both Q and V scores. For analysis of GPA I used only 4-point scale grades and didn’t convert other scales to it (i.e. 10-point). Selection of universities/programs was done by regular expressions so there can be some noise added by incorrect parsing. For example, “University of Washington” may both mean Seattle and St. Louis. I tried to avoid it the best I could but there can be mistakes nonetheless. How did you choose universities/programs? Voluntarily, so there are a lot of omissions. Sorry, if your university/program is not there. Also, bear in mind that programs may overlap (for example ‘Computer Science’ and ‘Electrical Engineering’). Finally, I excluded uni/program from analysis if there were less than 30 observations. Will you share your code/data? I am thinking about it, but undecided yet.   5. Hello there, I'm from Turkey with a Law B.A. and a political science M.A. (still studying on my thesis), and I am planning to apply sociology phd programs in the USA. However, the qualitative analysis method is preferred in most of the social sciences programs, and quantitative method is not taught enough or maybe not at all (in my case). I did not took any calculus or statistics class. As I see, on the other hand. the social sciences are tended to prefer quantitative analysis method in the USA. So, I don't want to waste my time/money/effort to apply for programs which I cannot be accepted, and I think that my chance would increase if I apply for the schools which prefer qualitative method or at least tolerate it. Do you know what programs would be better for me in this regard? Thanks!
