  1. I'm planning on applying for grad school this year, pursuing a PhD in physics or astronomy. Do they ever look at your social media (facebook, twitter, instagram) when you apply? This is probably a silly thing to worry about, but I'm wondering because I've become more outspoken on social media in the past year. I have been engaging in discussions (some might call them arguments 😅) with people in comment sections... Mostly expressing my opinions on US 'politics', social issues, religion, etc (if it matters, I am leftist and agnostic). I'm never disrespectful of others' views, it's just that I am
  2. Does anyone know the process for applying to European masters programs? Unfortunately lack of funding in the US has forced me to look for other options. From the websites of some institutions I've looked at it seems like unlike the US you don't reach out to professors before applying, you just apply like we did in undergrad? Thanks.
  3. Hi everyone! I decided to create a thread for the peeps applying for school psychology programs for Fall 2019! What schools are you applying to? Are you going for an EdS or PhD program? How did you pick your programs? In general, how is the whole process going for you all? I hope I can get people to add on to this because it would be nice to have people to relate to haha. I am personally applying for PhD programs. My finalized list (so far) includes: Northern Arizona University, University of Memphis, University of Washington, and University of Virginia. I am excited to hear about ev
  4. Hi all, Is a score of 307 too low for funding consideration and/or admission to an MPP program? I am not great at standardized tests which is why I am debating retaking it, however, I am not sure I can do that much better. This is the one portion of my application that is causing me anxiety. 5.5 Writing 153 Q 154 V My undergraduate GPA is 3.33 (3.60 in my major) and I will have five years of work experience by the time I enroll. Most of my experience is in private sector within the healthcare industry. Schools I am applying to: Michigan (Ford), Duke (Sanfor
  5. Can anyone evaluate my SOP? I always loved mathematics. It seemed to me mysterious as a game and fulfilling when a problem is being solved. However, when I got older, developed the idea that mathematics is just a game is not the whole story. Through my bachelor, I took courses in various fields from geometry to probability and statistics. For the bachelor project, I elaborated a paper named “A Problem in Cartography” by John Milnor, a discussion on which is the best way to project a sphere on a plane. I continued my studies in Pure Mathematics, getting admission from Sharif university of

  7. Happy Sunday! I am preparing to submit my MPP application at the University of Michigan - Ford School. I am currently finalizing the Employment/Work Experience section of the online application. I was wondering if anyone has any advice on whether volunteer / extracurricular involvement should be included in this section? It seems Ford is primarily looking for paid employment? For additional context, I am almost five years removed from undergrad but have remained fairly active in different boards and nonprofit organizations since that time. This information is included in my resume

  9. Hey everyone, I am a prospective graduate student for the School of Public Health at UC Berkeley ( Cal ). I am still waiting for an acceptance letter. I'm Speaking Acceptance Into Existence (i.e my user name ) Have you been accepted, rejected, still waiting? Any news on when your department will release decision letters? Lets Discuss! <3
  10. First-time grad-school applicant here. The Political Science Department of the school I'm applying for offers both an MA program and a Ph.D. program. After submitting my Ph.D. application, I wonder if I can use a similar version of my SOP for the MA application. Although I understand that the norm here is to personalize each SOP to fit each program, I fail to see the necessity in this case since I'm dealing with the same school, the same department, and the same faculty. In addition, after reading posts in this forum, which I should have done long before submitting my applications,
  11. My list (not necessarily in this order: University of Chicago (submitted) Northwestern University (in progress) University of Wisconsin, Madison (in progress) Indiana University, Bloomington (in progress) University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (in progress) University of Pennsylvania (in progress) What about you guys?
  12. I'm applying to several MSW programs in the Cal State University system These schools have their own applications in addition to the big CSU application (CAL APPLY) that is to the school Need help with Cal Apply This is asking me for an SOP, to list achievements, experiences, and documents (a section on each) but I've already filled this kind of info out on the MSW application, do I have to do both? CSU APPLY is asking if I'm independent, which I am, but it wants 2016 Tax information which I do not have yet. I don't see why they need this other than for their stats, this i
  13. I am a mathematics student at Sharif University of Technology. Also, I've passed the minor course of economics in that university. My GPA is about 15.30 out of 20 and I'm planning to apply for economics. I have some questions: 1. Is a bachelor's in Mathematics going to weigh me down when applying for a master's in Economics? 2. In which universities I have a chance of getting admission with a full scholarship? 3. Is there any chance at all? because I've heard that the demand for participating in master's programs for this field is very high. What should I do?
  14. Hi everyone. I am currently in the final semester of my masters in education and have come to the conclusion that I would like to continue my education and pursue a PhD. I am currently completing a degree in Social Studies education, and would like to also pursue my PhD in that same field of study. My current program has led me to read a lot of academic work, and one such author resonated with me each time I read his work. After a quick search of his name in a bout of curiosity, it turns out he is the program director/doctoral advisor for a Social Studies Education program. The schools website
  15. Hey all, I am looking to see how likely I am to get into the following schools with the following criteria. I feel like I am fitting in somewhere around the average requirements of most applicants at these schools, with maybe a slightly lower GPA. GPA: 3.3 from a small liberal arts school in Ohio GRE: 161 V and 159 Q with 5.0 Analytical Writing Experience: 3 campaign cycles as an intern/volunteer (since '08), 3 campaign cycles as a paid staff in field management and data analytics; 1 year in nonprofit fundraising; 3 months interning with a lobbying firm in D.C.; Only 2 year
  16. I am applying to a few programs in Chemical Engineering and Environmental Engineering in the USA. Out of a total of 12, I have already applied to 8 programs. I will finish applying to the rest in the next two weeks. This thread is an attempt to bring together all applicants who will be joining Chemical Engineering and related programs like Environmental Engineering and Material Science. The reason for bringing these programs together is the common pool of applicants who apply there. The purposes of this thread are following- 1. Share possible good programs to apply to. 2. S
  17. Hello Everyone: When I joined my previous group, I was not aware of that my adviser only focuses on training and writing books. Basically, our group did not do any research. My adviser only cares about writing training materials and books to teach people how to use software. All we do is to take a lot of screenshots for the training.... When my adviser recruited me, he only mentioned our group has industrial projects. He did not mention actually they are "training" projects not research projects. After staying a year, I had enough and decided to quit my current pr
  18. Hello, I'm pretty new to this forum, I was hoping for some input/help I'm planning on applying to grad school for speech language pathology for the Fall 2017 year, and I'm just freaking out about applications and GRE scores. I have a 3.731 GPA but my GRE scores are god awful. It's pretty embarrassing to even share my scores (mostly due to the math). To be fair, I did not study as hard as I should have for the GRE. I'm planning on taking it a second time around and I've been putting in major hours (Memorized 500 vocab words + Magoosh vocab). However, it seems my Achilles heel is the

  20. Hi folks, I am in a situation where I may either graduate in Spring/Summer 2017 (lack of funding), or in Spring/Summer 2018 (if secure a dissertation fellowship). Since neither alumni from my lab nor alumni from my program (STEM) typically go into academia to be a postdoc, I would like to know at what point of time should I do such or certain things, so that I can ultimately getting a post-doctoral research position that I want, presumably at the beginning of a Fall semester/quarter or as soon as I fulfilled all the requirements that complete my program. I think that inputs from thos
  21. This is my first posting on Grad Cafe, so here it goes.... I'm applying to urban planning programs that have a transportation policy focus. Right now, I am definitely applying to UNC- Chapel Hill, USC, UCLA, and University of Maryland. The first three programs are all housed in the schools' public affairs, policy, or arts and sciences schools. Maryland, however, is based in the School of Architecture. I'm much more of a policy guy, and U-Maryland's curriculum has a strong policy focus. However, the curricula at other architecture-based schools I researched, such as Harvard and UPenn, have
  22. Hi everyone, I am applying to masters in philosophy programs in the next few days and to be perfectly honest, this was a recent decision. i am a philosophy major with about a 3.6 GPA... I am a bit concerned however because my first year and a random semester in my third year are very bad.....i mean.....i pretty much slacked off and got Ds and Fs... so my first question is... how bad will this effect my odds of being accepted? i retook them...hence why my GPA does not reflect those poor marks. secondly, who knows how good my letters of reference will be. my profs know me but they dont thi
  23. Hi, friends! Would it be a bad thing to get my PhD in Social Psychology from the same university from which I got my Bachelor's? It's a great university in rankings, but again--it would be the same one. What are your thoughts?
