  1. Anyone waiting for the admission results of the Physics and Astronomy programs of the University of Calgary? Are you already admitted or rejected? I don't want to bother my prospective professor or the administrative coordinator (Ms. Evans) by emailing them. I would appreciate it if we can share our information about this program.
  2. Hi everyone! Really sorry about this post. I am new here on Grad Cafe and working on my applications to graduate school (21 Fall) right now, and I am really nervous. It would be really helpful if you guys could take a look and provide me some feedback on my profile. (This is similar to What are my chances post....I found some links in the pinned post not validated anymore...Again I apologize for this....) I am currently a senior in UIUC with a crappy GPA of 3.4/4.0 (many Bs, some As, one C) majoring in Astronomy + Physics minoring Math. Here are some details about my profile:
  3. I am interested in pursuing my Doctoral studies in X-ray Astronomy. I was introduced to this field in the first semester of my M.Sc. programme, when I was looking for a subject of study for my thesis project. I started reading in detail about the field of study and some major science missions launched since the very first discovery of extraterrestrial X-rays. During the same time I familiarised myself with the methods of studying X-ray sources and the tools and techniques as explained by NASA’s HEASARC.I read on review papers and worked on my analysis skills by attempting to reproduce th
  4. I am planning on pursuing a PhD in astronomy (extragalactic/cosmology). I hear conflicting advice on contacting potential PhD advisors, but I figured I'd try to be a little proactive even if it might not be too helpful in my application process. What's the best way in contacting professors - especially in the sciences? To those who have had successful correspondence, how did you go about this? What kind of questions did you ask? Did you find it helpful? Forgive me for asking the dumb questions...I'd rather sound dumb here than in the email or the application! haha I'd appreciate any in
  5. Hi, I have a 60th percentile in my PGRE and a 330 score in the general one. I have completed my Bachelors from India and a Master's from a top 30 college in US. I would like to keep all my options open while applying for a Astro PhD program for Fall 2017 later this year. I have reasonable research experience and I believe can obtain good reference letters from my past PIs. Considering the AAS statement on the correlation (lack thereof) between the PGRE and Astro performance I had decided on not giving the PGRE again. However, I would like to know whether that is foolhardy decision, e
