    UT Austin - Part-Time Jobs

Hi all, I've committed to UT Austin's PhD program in English (yay!), and I am so excited to head down in August. Top of mind right now is finding and securing housing, and with that, concerns about budget/affordability. The program funding is modest at best, so I know that I'll have to find some other work to supplement my stipend. I'm wondering if anyone can offer suggestions about reasonable part-time or contract work for grad students? I know it's suggested we don't devote too much time to other work, as coursework and TA'ing already demand a lot and the priority, but this is more of a need than a choice... I've obviously thought about tutoring (any good programs/companies to look at in particular)? I am also leaving in job in non-profit development, so some kind of proposal and grant-writing would be really great. Any thoughts?

    UT austin MSBA application deadline

Hello, all, so I'm interested in applying for ut-Austin MSBA program, and on their website, it says that The Texas MSBA program enrolls one class per year, in the summer semester only. The application for the Class of 2019 will open August 1, 2017. Round 1: October 16, 2017Round 2: January 8, 2018 (Final deadline for international applicants)Round 3: March 19, 2018 Round 4: May 1, 2018 This program starts from Summer - Fall - Spring. (10month) Is that mean that If I want to start in 2019 Summer (graduating 2019 Spring), I will have to apply before May 1, 2018? That's one year before the program start.... so it confuses me. Also, do yall have any comments or ideas about this business analytics program? Thank you so much. I'm new to the forum, sorry if I made any mistake.
  4. Hi all, I just received my admission from Northwestern IMC and am facing difficulties deciding on which program to choose. As UT Austin is a newer program, there doesn't seem to be many posts on the program so I was wondering if anyone could provide any insights that can help me toward deciding! I have accepted my admission at UT Austin and paid a deposit of 2000$, and even finished my career services interview. I thought I didn't have a chance to get into Northwestern, but it turns out I got admitted the last day of being on the waitlist! It's very hard of a decision as the tuition at Northwestern is 84K, and 42K for UT Austin. Northwestern- prestigious program, lots of alumni, focuses more on tech and ecommerce UT Austin- new program (started in 2016), not as many alumni in the field as compared to Northwestern, but there's lots of alumni for McCombs (so could still be of great help when looking for jobs), focuses more on quant and analysis of data in targeting consumers. I was wondering if anyone could provide any insights to the two programs, your opinions are of great help, thank you all so much!

Trying to plan my future, yo. Also: anyone know what their funding amounts are? Ty, and go in peace, fellow poets!

    IFA MA vs. UT-Austin PhD

Hello everyone I'm interested in studying photography (including issues of class, power and the documentary genre). I was accepted to the IFA's MA program, and the UT Austin PhD American Studies program (which would have a strong photography angle). I am wait-listed at U Michigan-Ann Arbor's PhD art history program. I ultimately want to get a PhD, then teach and curate photography. IFA is tremendously respected, and would open a lot of doors (maybe more in curating than academia), but would cost $70,000. UT Austin is of course free. But do you think it 1.) is respected / opens doors and 2.) might allow me to keep a foot in both academic and curating worlds? I would appreciate any insight you might have. Thank you!
  7. Hey all, I am looking to see how likely I am to get into the following schools with the following criteria. I feel like I am fitting in somewhere around the average requirements of most applicants at these schools, with maybe a slightly lower GPA. GPA: 3.3 from a small liberal arts school in Ohio GRE: 161 V and 159 Q with 5.0 Analytical Writing Experience: 3 campaign cycles as an intern/volunteer (since '08), 3 campaign cycles as a paid staff in field management and data analytics; 1 year in nonprofit fundraising; 3 months interning with a lobbying firm in D.C.; Only 2 years of work experience after completing my undergrad (I took a semester off to work on the 2012 Presidential campaign) and volunteered/interned throughout college on various local, state, and national races in digital and organizing related work. I am applying/have applied to the following schools: Duke Sanford (MPP), Chicago Harris (MPP), Syracuse Maxwell (MPP), UT-Austin (MPA), Georgetown McCourt (MPP), NYU Wagner (MPA), OSU John Glenn (MPA), USC Price (MPA), IU SPEA (MPA). Thanks!

    UT Austin - Fall 2016

Anyone going for UT Austin this fall? I am going for my MS in ORIE
  9. So I have received all of my admits and have narrowed my selection down to two schools for a M.S. in Aerospace Engineering. 1. University of Texas Austin 2. University of Washington I know Austin is a better school (and cheaper), but I know there is a lot of aerospace companies in the Seattle area (several of which I would love to work for). I was hoping to get some opinions on which may be a better option based on name vs. industry in the area. Thanks!
  10. Hello everyone, I am a senior EE undergrad and I am going to study for PhD beginning from Fall 2016. I currently have offers from 4 schools and I am full of questions on which one would be the best for me. My offers are: - EPFL, EDIC PhD: 1 year fellowship - UC San Diego, ECE PhD: 3 years fellowship - UT Austin, ECE PhD: Funding decisions will be made in the following week as the Graduate Coordinator said. - Stanford, EE, Master’s: No funding, I do not think I will accept this offer. The schools that I did not get any response yet, are University of Michigan, USC and CMU. My research interests are statistical signal and image processing and there are professors and labs that I would love to work with, in all of the schools that I have offers from. Before getting any news from the schools, EPFL was my first choice due to its location. From what I have learnt from the internet, EPFL has a PhD system similar to U.S. in terms of quality, and it is close to my home country, which, I think, is the ideal case for me. However, I talked to some professors in my university and some of them suggested to me to choose a school in the U.S. if I want to be a professor in the future. Their main point was that the schools in the U.S. are known better worldwide, and the name-brand of the university matters in academia. The question that I am very curious about is whether EPFL is comparable to institutions such as UC San Diego, UT Austin or other “near-to-top” universities in the U.S or not. Would attending EPFL for my PhD hurt me when it comes to finding academic jobs in US or Europe? Another question I have is that, the department I have offer from at EPFL is "Computer and Communication Sciences", not EE. However, the topics that I am going to work on are the same as what I will work on if I go to an EE department at another university. Do you know whether the name of the PhD program not being EE would cause problems for me while looking for academic jobs in EE departments, after my graduation? I am unable find further information on these topics and any help and information you provide will be very important for me. Thank you all in advance.
  11. Hello all, Until now, I have been accepted to 4 universities to pursue a PhD degree in electrical and computer engineering, and at this point I am a bit confused. These schools are: 1. USC (Computer Engineering), in contact with professors in computer architecture. There are professors showing considerable interest in working with me. Location-wise: very enjoyable weather, close to very good places for travelling and close to industry but I heard that the neighborhood is not very nice. 2+2 year guaranteed fellowship: I have the first two years to decide which professor that I want to work with, and for the other two I think the school pays still but I should have an advisor. 2. CMU (ECE), in contact with professors in comp arch and wireless networking Similarly, a few professors have shown their interest in working with me, sent emails. But their topics do not intrigue me as much as the others do. The weather is not very nice, and I did not like my travel options very much. However, the city looks good. I am with fellowship but it seems I need to find an advisor in the first few months of arrival. - EPFL (EDIC), in contact with professors in comp arch Just exchanged a few emails with professors but nothing in detail. Will attend Open House in two weeks. Its location-wise plus is that it is close to home but I'd really rather study in US. I have one year to find an advisor, and almost none of them seems to have a problem funding students. - UT at Austin, accepted to the computer arch track Just a quick interview and an acceptance followed like a month ago. Not much contact since, but I am planning on getting more information from current students and professors. I definitely rather hot weather than cold. They say that it is also close to many tech companies. And Austin looks like a great city to be a student in. I am told that I have a 4 year fellowship but I need to find an advisor in one year. My primary interest was in computer architecture, and I had mentioned in my SOP that I might also do some things in networking. Research and that I like what I do are the most important aspects but I also give a lot of importance to the location and amount of financial support. Luckily, all of them seems ok regarding financial concerns. I am now closest to choosing UT at Austin, but I might as well choose CMU or maybe others. I cannot be sure which one would be better, or if there is even a great gap between them. Which one do you think is best in comp arch field? Or more generally, what would you do if you were in my shoes? Your comments are all appreciated greatly. Thanks all in advance,

    UT Austin, PhDs 2012

Hi, I thought I'd start a conversation for those of us who are considering UT Austin for our PhDs this fall. I've been accepted into the film studies PhD and would love to hear from others grads who are thinking of moving there, stuff about the city, housing, funding, costs of living, the entire shebang. And if anyone else is thinking about joining the Department of Radio-Television-Film, would love to hear from you! Thanks!
  13. I have seen a few acceptances over the past several days for C&I (and past few weeks for Cultural Studies in Ed.) and I am wondering if anyone has any additional news regarding number of admits, timeline for the acceptances, etc. I have applied only for the Curriculum and Instruction Ph.D, but my POI and several other professors take on graduate students in both areas so I have included both, since slots are filling up from both concentrations. My online status on the website still says "In Review," so as of now I am still in the game, but I have to say that seeing acceptances on the Results Survey is making me anxious (ok, obsessive) regarding when my status will be disclosed to me. Congrats to those who have been admitted!

Those who have been accepted to UT's LBJ school for public policy: did you receive an email from your POI or did the grad school notify you to check the website?
