  1. Wanted to start a thread for anyone who applied to an interdisciplinary or "combined" African American studies & Film/Media/Cinema studies program ...or are looking to minor in African American studies/incorporate African American history and culture into a Film/Media/Cinema studies PhD program.
  2. Hi I'm an international student and I recently got into a master's program for NYU and WUSTL. I know at a first glance NYU seems much more superior, but I have a few issues that bugs me. One is obviously the money. WUSTL offered a full tuition remission for one year ( not sure about my 2nd year, they didn't say anything in the letter about extending the offer to my second year) NYU offered about 20k off from tuition for one year. They did say this offer is contingent in my second year, so I need to hold a good academic standing in my first year. It's also obvious that NYC is notorious for expensive rents and other fees. I know NYU is one of the top universities in relation to film, and NYC itself is full of resources and opportunities for film-related work, but the money is a bit of a worry for me. Also, although I've lived my life in a big city for +15 years, I don't think I'm such a city person based on past experiences, so I'm worried whether I'll be able to get used to the environment. I really don't need the extra stress. All this seems to aim at going to WUSTL, but my other problem is that I haven't really decided for certain whether I want to get into PhD after my master's for now, since I ultimately aim to work as a film programmer rather than teaching academically. If I was certain about getting into PhD, I probably would choose go to WUSTL, since I have another chance of applying for PhDs in the future. But since I may just finish my studies with a Master's degree, it just increases my uncertainty about going to WUSTL Master's Program. I did also get into UCLA and UT Austin Master's as well, but they didn't offer any funding or tuition remission, so I'm only considering NYU and WUSTL right now. I've been stressing over this for days, but I just can't make up my mind. Any advice would be really helpful.
  3. Thought I'd start a thread somewhat akin to last year's, since I can't find one I'm a 2017 graduate with a BA in Asian Studies (maj) and film (min) looking at phd/masters programs in film studies with a focus on east Asia, specifically Japan. As of now, I've contacted Harvard (through EALC, not film and media) Yale, and Chicago, which appear to be the ONLY schools with programs in my area of interest I'm a bit freaked out by the admission stats, for all three, though. Anyone have any suggestions or thoughts on other programs worth looking at?
  4. Hi! I am wondering about those who have applied to the DePaul MS in Cinema Program. How long did it take to hear back from the time you sent in your application? The first year of the MS Cinema is the same as the MFA and then you can apply to the MFA program. Has anyone done this or thought about doing it? Thank you!
  5. ive applied for 9 programs but i really dont know where i stand. i am 35, with bushels of experience making work, performing, and teaching. my recs and statements are bold and strong. i worry about my antique undergrad GPA (3.24) and my 5 year old unpracticed-for GRE score (560/780/4.5). who do i even think i am applying for these schools, for applying to Brown and Stanford and UCLA and Northwestern and Berkeley.... but sometimes i think i am definitely going to get it. i've done so much, i've proven myself! essentially, i am lost. i have no clue. anybody else? any insight? other worries or relaxing?
  6. I could not find a recent post for all the students considering film/media/television studies on the MA level... so I thought I would start one! I have been searching for the past month for some of the less popular MA programs, and frankly I could use some help. Here is a list of some schools and programs I am considering: University of South Florida - Masters of Liberal Arts in Film Studies (Did my undergrad work here so this is more of a backup) Emory University - MA Film Studies University of Florida - MA Film Studies Indiana University, Bloomington - MA Film and Media Studies Georgia State University - MA Film Studies Savannah College of Art and Design - MA Film Studies Boston University - MA Film Studies University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee - MA Media Studies Anyone have new suggestions? I am trying to stay away from schools in California and New York and some of the big name schools like Brown and Northwestern. Appreciate the help!
  7. Hi, Al least and after a long waiting period I got into two PhD Film Studies programs. I have a very good offer from an Uk uni that offers me a college studentship which includes fees + 14.000Pounds stipend for 3 years - The POI was very interested and he works in the area I'm interested in... However, It's not a very well known Uni. On the other hand, I got into a more recognized program, which I also like as I personally know most of the people there (I did my undergrad there). The POI is a god fit , however, they just cover fees + a TAship of 4000$. I guess I should chose the 1st option, but, I'm worried about future job market perspectives.... Any help? Cheers! N.
  8. I am applying for the Ph.D. in Film Studies programs at various universities for Fall 2012, and wanted to see if anyone had applied before and can give me my chances of being accepted. Here's my academic background: GRE: 160 Verbal (86%), 5.5 Writing (96%), 151 Quantitative (51%) B.A. in Anthropology from UC Berkeley, G.P.A. 3.00 B.F.A. in Film from California College of the Arts, GPA 3.69 M.F.A. in Film from Art Center College of Design, GPA 3.70 I wrote a Masters Thesis on the Films of Oliver Stone, and took many film seminars and theory courses for my B.F.A and M.F.A. degrees, and wrote many research papers on topics like Jean Luc Godard, Stanley Kubrick, French New Wave, etc. I have three very strong letters of recommendations from professors who know my research interests very well, and I even got an A+ in one of their seminars. Also, I have worked as a Film/Video Specialist for the County of Los Angeles for three years, directing, writing, and editing documentaries, PSAs, and commercials. I have emailed several professors already, and have gotten positive responses mostly from UC Santa Barbara and USC professors, who have said my research interests are interesting and also match their research interests. My main research interests are the new wave of modern Asian films, and also films from the French New Wave period of the 1960s. Here are the schools I'm applying to: UC Santa Barbara Berkeley UC Irvine Harvard USC Brown These are all for Ph.D. in Film Studies and/or Visual/Media Studies programs. Anyone can give me advice on my chances, or have had experience applying to these schools already?
