Hi everyone! I wasn't exactly sure whether to file this under Professional Studies or Social Sciences so hopefully it reaches the right people! I was just accepted into a counseling program and am having a bad case of indecision. Technically, I have about a year until I really need to declare this but since I'm trying to get work experience and hate having loose ends, I figured maybe you guys could try to help me now. The programs/careers that I'm stuck between are School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health. On the school's website, they even seem to be selling Mental Health more as they list a bunch of different options for it and only talk about the classes needed for the School Counseling page. Anyway, my issue is that I live in NJ and this is a tough area to get a job in anywhere really and schools tend to be who you know. My boyfriend works for the Board of Ed as a custodian so potential in there but who knows. What's holding me back from deciding besides potential jobs is what the actual work environments are like. My concern with school counseling is that I'll be stuck doing all administrative work and barely get to interact with students other than college admissions and class schedules if I'm working in a high school. I want to actually be able to counsel people and feel like I reached them. Moving on to Mental Health, what is it like to work in this field? How stressful is it?How difficult would it be for me to find a job being my Bachelor's is actually in English? I currently volunteer for a crisis hotline and am trying to get some work experience (though I'm not sure where the best place to go with no experience is) but I know some places may be weary to hire someone who didn't have an undergrad degree in a social science. Sorry for rambling everyone, just trying to figure things out!
gradapps posted a topic in ApplicationsHi all, I just joined grad cafe because I am quite honestly extremely overwhelmed by the application process. I am applying to both counselling psychology and clinical mental health master's programs. My main concerns lie within being able to present myself as an ideal candidate when I don't have any research experience that defines a narrow scope of interest or expertise. I have done my due diligence in finding programs that don't require previous research experience; however, when reviewing examples of statements of intent, I find that most people have a clear interest that sets them apart. I suppose my question is how I can take my various interests/experiences and turn them into a selling point that is cohesive. For instance, I am gaining counselling experience at a distress centre so I am interested in trauma and crisis intervention; I work with a clinical psychologist completing intakes and diagnostic interviews under his supervision; I have some experience mentoring immigrant youth, which has led me to want to work with multicultural/diverse populations; and I've done some peer support with those affected by cancer, which has led to the desire to counsel those suffering from chronic illness, or dealing with loss and bereavement. Would it be unwise for me to express that I would like to further explore these varying interests during my studies in order to determine what path I would like to take? I am simply confused and uninformed about how all of this works so any advice on how you would approach the situation would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
From what I can see, nobody has started a thread yet for those of us applying for counseling programs yet. So here's one now! Has anyone decided on a program yet? Any interviews? Acceptances and/or declines? I have applied to three schools for their Clinical Mental Health Counseling ed programs.
Hey all! I applied to the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Ed programs at CSUF and UNLV. DId anyone else apply to these programs? UNLV was due 02/01/16, and I haven't heard back. CSUF was due 03/01/16, and I haven't heard from them either. I'm dying in purgatory waiting! I'm nervous that I haven't been accepted because I haven't heard from either yet. Is anyone else in the same boat?
