Hi! I am a European MSc student trying to get more relevant research experience in preparation of my PhD apps next year, and I now find myself writing a cover letter for a US internship postition. I need to answer the following question, and I am not sure how to go about it: How do you hope to use your upbringing, background and/or life experiences to enhance your internship experience. Should I focus on how my background helped me develop the academic/informal skills to succeed in an internship? Is this more of a specific diversity/overcoming challenges-focused question? Should I be talking about personal difficulties? Should I focus on my extracurriculars/outreach activities? In the European applications I have encountered so far the focus was very strongly on purely academic qualifications, so I am worried I might be blind to some cultural clue about how to answer this question. Any tips about what I might be expected to focus on in my answer to this question would be very much appreciated!

Hi folks! I thought it might be helpful to create a place where those of us who are looking for a new position could critique/swap our CVs, resumes, and cover letters as well as discuss other topics related to applying to jobs. (I realize there is a "Jobs" subforum, but I felt like a thread with a psych-specific focus would be beneficial). I'll start! I recently discovered the perfect research position (would be my first paid), so I want to do everything I can to put my best foot forward. Some questions I had: Research fit is absolutely spot on, but my personal research experience so far is not relevant to this particular focus. Should I be concerned? The application is hosted on a portal that only seems to require a resume. However, I know the name of the PI - would it be appropriate to email them in addition to indicate my particular interest and attach a cover letter? Would that likely be seen as welcome initiative, or desperate and not following direction? I would love a critique of my resume! I'm happy to swap with anyone as well. Let's make this a productive year! 👍

Hey all, I'm starting to draft my statement of purpose and was wondering if any of you had any advice about the general structure of how the statement should look. It'd be great to hear any other advice as to what you believe the the essential aspects of a successful statement are Applying to sociology PhD programs and a couple of MA programs in theology, but would be happy to hear advice from those outside of these disiciplines as well. Thanks in advance!

Should the research statement be part of the cover letter ?
Damniu posted a question in Questions and Answers
Hello, i am applying for a phd position. The university requires a cover letter and a research statement , I have already written the cover letter , but it already includes my background and my research interest . So I am wondering if I should still right a separate statement ? thank you -
Should applicants include a cover letter for online PhD applications? I'm getting a lot of mixed information on this point, and none of the applications I've looked at specifically ask for it, so it'd have to be uploaded as an "additional" or miscellaneous document. Thanks in advance for your help.
