  1. Hello!! So I am from San Diego, CA (SoCal) and am looking at some Bay Area schools including: CSU East Bay, San Jose State, and San Francisco. Does anyone know anything much about these schools? I've looked up all the discussions I could find but I figured I might open up the discussion to others with the same questions. -Are there any red flags with these schools? -How long do you typically graduate? -Is there any strong reason why one of these schools is better than the rest? I'm considering not even applying to SDSU because of how competitive it is. I really like a focus on autism and special education but I know we should be well rounded. My stats are: 151V, 149Q, 4.5W. Cumulative GPA: 3.84, CSD GPA: 3.79. I have 7+ years working with kids with autism, 2 years as a behavioral therapist, 4+ years observing/volunteering with a SLP at a school district, NSSLHA member, deans list x7, bilingual in Spanish, and I just got an ASHA volunteer position.
  2. Hey everyone! I just wanted to connect with others who are also waiting for admission decisions for MSW programs; this process feels like it's taking forever! I applied to UC Berkeley, CSU East Bay, SF State, and am still working on SJSU. This is definitely nerve-wracking! Has anyone else applied and feels nervous????? Which programs did ya'll apply to??
  3. In April I received a reject from CSU EAST BAY for extended-MS in SLP followed by an admit for Post- bacc B.S. in SLP. I accepted the admit for UW post-bacc in BS SLP and now I have an email asking for interview from EAST BAY. I am in dilemma as to what to do? The points here are:- 1. B.S. requires me to do 75 extra credits apart from 50 mandatory credits included in post-bacc program. The extra credits include subjects from I&S, VLPA all of which are completely not related to SLP. 2. I am not sure what extra classes East bay asks the students to take for the extended masters program. 3. I do know that ranking wise UW is way above East bay, but does it affect the job prospects after graduation? (I am aware that if I choose UW, I will have to apply for masters next year and go through admission process again) But will Post -bacc from UW make my profile strong? I am personally interested in medical SLP and want to gain my experience in that. Any suggestions would be thankful and help me in taking my final decision.
  4. I had a really great impression of CSUEB when I visited for their department tour, but I've heard a lot more about SJSU through current students and they had mostly good things to say about it. A downside to SJSU seems like the administration is a little unorganized. In addition, i'm interested in learning more about aphasia and it seems like CSUEB's aphasia treatment program is more established than SJSU's. Tuition and commute are about the same for both, so those aren't major factors for me (although since i'm an extended master's student, CSUEB is at least an extra summer long). A bummer about CSUEB is that they're very particular which courses you take to satisfy ASHA requirements, which means I'd probably have to take classes at a CC this summer, but I know that's a minor con and they claim that those courses maximize preparation to practice as an SLP. I would also very much like to eventually have a hospital placement and prepare myself for medical SLP, but I'm not sure if I'm more likely get placed in a hospital at one school than the other. Any input on either of these programs or other factors to consider would be great!!! Side question: i know that for clinicals i'll have to compete with my peers for the same hospitals, so any tips on maximizing your chances of securing clinical experience (or even a job down the line) at a hospital? i'd love to hear about people's experiences :))
  5. Hi! I got accepted into CSUEB's Extended Master's program (for non-CDS majors). Yay! Has anyone who's been through this program know how stringent they are about course pre-reqs? For example, one of their courses (Anatomy and Physiology of Speech and Hearing) says that we need have taken Biology 100 before taking it. Can we do concurrent enrollment? Just curious how strict they are. Also in your program experience, how many courses you have to take each semester for the first year in order to catch up? Or how many semesters did it take to get caught up? And one last question, I saw that the Foundations of Clinical Practicum class for Fall 2019 is Mon-Thurs from 930-1045; is this set in stone? Or is this arranged case by case? It's a 2-unit class, so it's kind of strange to be 4 days a week. Any help would be appreciated; thank you!
  6. Hello there! I'm an out-of-field student (majored in History) who is looking to apply to grad school for SLP for Fall 2019! I'm currently looking at the following schools: San Jose State University CSU East Bay UT Dallas Northern Arizona University Marquette University Montclair State University Grand Valley State University University of the Pacific University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign Here are my stats: 3.97 GPA, Currently taking prerequisite classes and will have 2 by application, 161V/160Q/4.5W. I was a teaching intern at a literacy/creative writing nonprofit, worked at my college's writing center for 3 years, worked with elderly people at a safe/affordable housing nonprofit, was an AmeriCorps college access counselor for low-income high school students of color, and currently work at a speech therapy private practice with preschoolers. I'm also certified as a Registered Behavior Technician and hope to soon start doing ABA therapy at my current job. Is there anything else I can do to improve my application? What are my chances for getting into the schools above? Thanks!

    MSW CSU 2018

Hi Guys! So it’s about that time! Schools are sending out their acceptance/decline letters. Let this be a place where you can share which CSUs you applied, which ones you’ve heard from and have yet to hear from. If you got invited for an interview please share some tips for those who haven’t had theirs yet. Let’s support each other and possibly meet people who will be in your program in the fall! My name is Selene and I applied to the extended programs for CSUF CSULA and CSUDH. I got accepted to CSULA and CSUDH but have yet to hear anything from CSUF.
  8. Hello, I'm interested in becoming a School Psychologist. I plan to apply to a Masters program this fall 2018. Currently finishing my bachelor's. My question is: Is it better to apply to a program that is a Educational Specialist degree in School Psychology (Ed.s) or Masters program in Counseling: School Psychology Credential. I really would like to go to CSUEB because they offer the Masters in Counseling: School Psychology Credential Program with Marriage and Family Therapy Licensure but I'm assuming these programs are different due to one being a Educational Specialist degree and the other being a Masters in counseling. Are there pros and cons to applying to a Masters in Counseling: with School Psychology Credential compared to applying to an Educational Specialist degree in School Psychology? (Ed.s) Whats the difference? Is it possible that employers look only for people who have an Educational Specialist Degree in School Psychology vs people with a Masters in Counseling: School Psychology Credential? Do they offer better pay to those who have an Educational Specialist degree? Thank you.
  9. I got into both San Jose State and Cal State East Bay (last minute on wait list for one of them!) for the MSW program and am having a difficult time deciding. I think San Jose state is considered a better school but I'm not sure. SJSU also has had massive budget cuts to the MSW programs and won't be offering any summer classes and limited electives. Any advice?
  10. I would like to invite anyone who has attended or is currently in a Cal State MSW program to please share your thoughts and experience on the program. As an applicant, I felt there wasn't enough information out there to make a decision on which schools would be a good fit for me. Some examples of questions I haven't found many answers to: What kind of social work interests you? Did/do you enjoy your overall program experience? What was faculty/staff like? What was the internship process and experience like? Is self-care emphasized in the program? Did/do you feel prepared going into the field? Thanks for sharing!
