  1. I have got admits from both the programs. CMU is offering 40K in scholarship while UPenn is offering 24K. The cost comes down to almost the same amount.(60K CMU vs 50K UPenn) I'm confused on the following parameters - 1. Job prospects being an international student 2. Coursework rigour and the skills I would get 3. UPenn has a internship in the last semester and seems to have a lot of opportunities in Philly. 4. Networking opportunities My primary aim to apply to these courses was to shift towards a career in public policy or related areas. Thank you in advance.

I want to understand how I should evaluate my chances of getting an admit with my profile/target the right universities. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

  4. I received offers of admission from UChicago Harris (MSCAPP) and CMU Heinz (MSPPM: DA track), and I'm certain that there are others out there facing the same choice. For what it's worth, Heinz has offered more funding than Harris (once again, I doubt that I'm the only one in this situation). I'm not even sure how to weigh the pros and cons of the two programs. To people who are currently in one of the programs, how do you feel about it? And to those trying to decide between the two options (or held offers from both places in previous years), what factors did you consider?
  5. Hi all, I am debating between Stanford and NYU for the MS in data science program. Stanford obviously have a bigger name, but the course curriculum and research faculty in NYU seems to be pretty solid and with much more ML focus. No preference between tech or non-tech outcome, but do know that I want to go industry afterwards instead of academia / pursue PhD. Any thoughts? Thanks.
  6. I am a master student , doing my masters in Software Engineering. I have a interest towards data, my question here would be what would be a good motivational topic to grow up my skills and work towards a spectacular thesis. Any suggestions would be really helpful for me to improve my skills in this domain.
  7. Inspired by @bigdatagirl 's idea. If anyone is applying for graduate programs in the Spring or Fall of 2019, feel free to post your profile and the colleges you are applying to. Just interested in what kind of profiles and applicants are out there. Undergraduate Major: Applied Math Institution: TCNJ GPA: 3.1 GRE: 162 Q / 151 V/ 5.0 A Relevant Courses: Regression, Data Mining, Database management, Intro to Data, Data management (taking now), Probability (taking now), Business Analytics (taking now) Applying to: Drexel, Penn State, Rutgers, NJIT, Northeastern, UMDUC, Villanova
  8. I've been accepted to both the University of Virginia's MS in Data Science and Georgetown's MS in Analytics with a focus in Data Science. From what I've found, UVA seems to be a higher ranked program for data science but Georgetown is considered more prestigious overall. I'm not sure how much to weigh the benefit of having a degree from Georgetown as for that looking good. It's also hard to find a lot of info on ranking of data science programs, since there's no one good place to look! I'm really conflicted between these two and am looking for advice/thoughts people have as well as anyone who is considering these programs or data science/analytics in general!!!
  9. Got admitted to this program in Feb and I am pretty much likely to go! Anyone who is admitted as well?
  10. Hello folks, I am currently exploring MPP/MPA courses in the USA with an intention to apply for Fall'2018. I am specifically looking at courses which combine Public Policy with Science/ Analytics/ Data Science like UChicago's MS in Computational Analysis and Public Policy (MSCAPP) , CMU's MSPPM- Data Analytics Track. I have a bachelor's in computer science and engineering from India and 2 years of work experience as a big data engineer at a reputed MNC. In addition I have considerable amount of part-time public service experience and I am working on a project that applies big data in the development policy space. Considering my profile, what are my chances of getting admitted into such courses at the top schools. More importantly, since I am an international applicant, what will be my the job prospects post such a graduate education? What are the job prospects of a policy student specializing in data analytics? Is the data analytics segment of such courses strong and rigorous enough to land me a job in the private sector in case the policy space does not have the desired openings? Also if you know of any good programs along these line, please do recommend Any help will be greatly appreciated
  11. Hey, I am planning for MS in data analytic's / business analytic's. I have one year or relevant experience in analytic's and currently i am in operation field. With no maths and statistics courses in my undergraduate do i have a good chance of getting an admission of NYU, CMU or other good universities.
  12. I am currently employed in Virginia working in research for a non-profit. I'm looking to get a MS in analytics part-time at an institution in which I can continue to keep working. This obviously limits my options a bit. Currently, I've been seriously looking at two programs: M.S. Data Analytics Engineering George Mason University M.S. Government Analytics Johns Hopkins I haven't applied yet, and am still doing a lot of research in terms of best fit for long term goals (including other programs). However, I did want to get perspective on a basic issue of cost vs. name recognition. Both are fairly new programs. From what I can decipher from initial research and reviewing of the coursework, it would seem GMU's program would provide more of the skills I'm looking for. In addition, the entire program would cost be about $20k in-state tuition with my employer fronting half of that. For JHU, I'll be responsible for around 35k. There is, however, the benefit the John Hopkins recognition (ultimately I'm hoping to move away from Virginia down the road). I'm personally leaning more towards the GMU route, but it would appear others online with this same question got a much more definitive response towards JHU.
