  1. Hey, I have an architecture background and switching to hci/ui ux and will apply OCT 2019. Anyone else in the same application boat? In the process of shortlisting schools currently! Would love to connect during the entire application process! Read here that Pratts program wasn't the best. Anyone else have any information about other programs in the US, Canada as well as EU? Currently considering UW, CMU, University of Michigan Ann arbor, Umea, Delft, Alto (for visual communication design)
  2. Hey! Applications are opening and i thought it would be best to freak out together! Drop in a comment if you're applying for fall 2020, with your Uni list, background and anything else you would like to share!
  3. Hey guys, I am on the waitlist of SVA MFA Design. Do you guys know the chances of getting in? Although I got admitted into Pratt but I really like the program at SVA and still want to wait till April 15th. Fingers crossed!
  4. Anyone hear back from this program yet or know a notification of decision date?
  5. Hey everyone! I don't know why but I feel like the graphic design department of every college functions seperately, in regard to their applications and admissions roll-out, so thought of having a different topic about the same. Thoughts?
  6. Hi Everyone, I am new to this site so please forgive me if I am ignoring any seemingly obvious protocol. I graduated from a reputable design school in NYC with a BFA in apparel design back in 2014. I have been working professionally as a menswear designer for the last four years, however I've slowly come to realize this is not what I want to spend the rest of my life doing. When I was in high school I wanted to pursue a degree in fine art but was dissuaded by my parents with the old "you'll never make any money" argument. In the last year I have developed an intense interest in art. Completely unlike the interest I had when I was younger. I found myself diving into theory, learning and reading about all sorts of artists I was not familiar with. It has been such a joy to rediscover my passion for art this way. I have also spent the last 6 months painting figurative and portrait work under a professional artist. I feel deeply that this is what I want to dedicate the rest of my working life to. This has lead me to begin researching MFA programs. I'm still not sure if an MFA is right for me. In the design and fashion world there is this perception that the art world looks straight down its nose at designers therefore I'm worried certain systemic prejudice may work against me while applying to programs. Does anyone have insight into the academic art world's perception of designers pursuing art careers? I've never met anyone who has made a move like this so I do not know if this notion is totally in my head or if there is an existing hierarchy of industries. I am hoping to use this forum as a place for advice as I do not know any working artists or other people who are interested in art in general, so I thank you in advance for reading and responding! Thanks - Jack
  7. starting to think about grad school applications. I am going into my 4th year at a BArch program where I have a minor in history. I have wanted to go into HP for many years but am torn about where to apply. I am looking into Clemson, UMD, BU, and UPenn but would love any inside knowledge about the programs. Also nervous about acceptance rates and what the schools take into account on deciding
  8. Hi! I got into the following programs. My favorite program is SVA as it seems like the most well-rounded program and that is important to me as someone coming without a design undergrad degree. But the price tag is very high... Anyone else thinking of these programs? SVA Products of Design MICA Social Design with $15,000 scholarship Parsons Design and Technology with 20% scholarship
  9. Would be delighted to know if anyone got through the design Impact program. If possible pls connect on mail - ivymuk2010@gmail.com
  10. Anybody here applied for Stanford MS in Engg Design Impact Program? Please reply, have few queries if they took interviews for selected candidates.
  11. Here are my top choices so far: Harvard: -MDes (Technology) Carnegie Mellon University: -MDes -MS in Computational Design (partial scholarship) -MHCI Going to Harvard and taking classes at MIT (especially the Media Lab) would be a dream. I just cannot figure out where Harvard MDes will take me professionally. CMU is very transparent about the graduates' career statistics. CMU students seem to be doing well professionally and financially. Does anyone know how well Harvard MDes grads transition to industry? Also, one of my goals is to learn as much CS as possible during grad school. Also admitted to: Columbia University: MArch Rice University: MArch (full ride) TU Delft: Design for Interaction Georgia Tech: Master of Science in Architecture (Digital Design and Fabrication)
  12. So all of the forums and columns I have found has been on what it is like to go back to school for law, med, or a social science none of them have focused on art. Anyone have any perspective on attending the same department of graduate program after working in the same field of study for a lengthy period of time?

  14. Hi all, Does anyone here have an experience applying (or got accepted) to CMU (MIIPS) UPenn (M:IPD) or Northwestern (Product Engineering)? Would like to know how do you prepare your portfolio especially if you're not a design student (like I am)! Or do you know any other school that have similar program as I mentioned above? Would be very happy if you'd like to discuss!
  15. Hi. I currently manage an animated series production in a company in Pakistan. I want a better grounding in film and production aspects. I want to go to a grad school ASAP (deadlines are close) but I am having a hard time finding scholarships and funding for international students in art/film schools. Can anyone help? Any country is good though I prefer the US. I am interested in RIT, Pratt, SCAD, and Chicago NY. If you could mention schools with January deadlines, I would prefer that.
  16. I'm looking for grad programs that are a mix of art/design (particularly animation) and CS but mainly focused on research – does anyone have any suggestions? A perfect example would be something like Texas A&M's MS-Viz Curriculum. Help would be greatly appreciated.
  17. Hi, I'm applying for furniture design and applied craft MFAs and am wondering if anyone has an idea of the acceptance rates at some of these places, or has attended any of the below schools and could shed some light on how difficult it is to get in? PNCA, Cranbrook, VCU, OCAC, SCAD Thanks! Sally
  18. Hi there everyone, I'm planning to apply for Master in Service Design or Experience Design, but I have not found a comprehensive reference for the universities offering such programs and their rankings. In fact, I have not found the category "Design" in any ranking system. Do you have any lists or know any place that I get one there? Thanks
  19. Is anyone applying to VCU for an MFA in Interior Design? An announcement was posted that all applicants were supposed to hear during the week of March 20th, and when I called that week, they said letters were already sent. But then I emailed the head of the department and she said " they are being sent in the near future"? I'm getting really anxious now and Im curious if anyone has heard back for the Fall 2017!
  20. Hi everyone! Thinking of going to CCA for MFA in Design in the fall focusing in IxD. Anyone planning to attend/ received their financial aid letters yet? Would love to hear people's thoughts/experience with the program!
  21. Hi, I'm currently in the third and final year of my Bachelor's Degree in something totally unrelated to Graphic Design, in India. I don't want to do anything related to my Bachelors in the future and want to do something related to Graphic Design/Illustration after I graduate. I've always been into art and design since a child and I was seriously considering Graphic Design in school. I even got accepted at an Art School with a Foundation year but I chose to stay in India as I got into one of the best colleges in Liberal Arts here. Even now, I find myself doodling in class all the time, have big ideas in my head and volunteer for small college design stuff. I don't have much experience apart from art classes in school, winning a few small college level competitions and designing invites, posters etc for college events. I thoroughly enjoy design but lack any kind of formal training and don't know any technicalities related to Graphic Design. I simply use a cheap knockoff of Photoshop to design stuff, which I am really passionate about. People praise my work all the time and a number of people have told me to pursue design in the future. I feel like I have the potential but lack any proper education in Design. I absolutely don't want to study further in India as the Design scene here isn't too strong and want to learn GD from scratch. I researched a lot and found the following options, but am not sure if i'll be accepted for an MFA at my level, being only 20 years old. OPTIONS: 3 year MFA in Graphic Design (schools like RISD, CalArts, CCA) Post-Bacc at MICA 2 year MS in Communication Design at Pratt 2 year AAS in Graphic Design at Parsons 2 year AAS at Pratt where after the two year AAS, I can transfer to the 3rd year (Junior level) of the BFA in Comm Design) Second Bachelors in Graphic Design It would be amazing if I could get some advice about this as I am thinking about this all the time and really need some direction and clarity. Also, if someone could suggest a few schools in Europe, UK etc, it would be great! As of now, whatever schools I researched about in Europe/UK, they require a lot of experience to apply at the Masters Level.

  23. I am looking into applying to MArch programs (most likely not this year, as most deadlines have passed or will be passing soon). I would be coming from a Bachelors of Psychology, and am in the process of putting together a portfolio. I was wondering whether anyone here is aware of Canadian programs (other than UBC and UCal) that accept students who do not have a background in architecture/design. Ideally I would like to be looking at 2 year programs, but I would be open to 3 year programs.
  24. Hey Grad Cafe, I'm a life-long sufferer of anxiety, who recently experienced a really bad bout of it after I started grad school at MICA in the fall of 2014. Lots of self-doubt, crippling panic attacks and a struggle to find adequate mental health care. So, for my graduate thesis project at MICA, I've been working on an app that translates anxiety therapy and self-care techniques into fun adventure games. Basically, my goal is to develop a tool that helps fill gaps in mental health care experienced by so many millennials. I recently started a non-profit crowdfunding campaign to support my research: igg.me/p/worry-quest/ Grad Cafe-ers, would you be able to contribute and/or spread the word about my project? I'm just over halfway funded with less than three weeks to go. The money will be used towards a trip that will provide me with professional mentorship, and the opportunity to test my anti-anxiety app in cities across the United States. Also, all contributions are tax-deductible donations to the Millennial Trains Project 501(c)(3) non-profit. I'm also open to advice for crowdfunding. Have any of you found any particular strategy to be really effective? If you have any questions, feel free to reply in the thread or email me at mbambach@mica.edu. Thanks!
