  1. Hey everyone, I wanted to start a thread for people applying for FLAS (foreign language area studies) funding for the upcoming summer 2020 session or the 20-21 academic year. I'm applying for Filipino at Cornell University and University of Wisconsin-Madison. Anyone else applying? We could suffer together and keep each other posted on notification status. Anyone who has received a FLAS award before, would you be so kind to give some general insight? I know the whole system is decentralized and different on a school-to-school basis, but just some ideas about how you did it and when you go
  2. I was recently surprised to learn that many universities with FLAS funding open applications to graduate students from other universities. For example, a friend of mine who is a Georgetown grad student got FLAS funding from the University of Michigan to do a summer program in Brazil. I think that the University of Michigan gave her the scholarship because they did not receive enough applications from their own students. My question is if anyone has heard of people applying for FLAS funding from third party universities during the academic year. I would like to study a critical language a
  3. Hi! This is probably a question that will best be answered by someone who has or has had a FLAS in the past. I'm applying for a FLAS for the first time in Brazilian Portuguese. I am already fluent in Spanish language. For the application I need a recommendation from a language instructor. My question is, should that instructor be one of my former Spanish instructors, or is it meant to be a Portuguese instructor? I am a beginner in Portuguese and have never taken courses in that language before, which is why I am confused. In the FLAS eligibility instructions it says that graduate level applica
  4. Hi everyone, I'm headed to the LBJ School of Public Affairs at UT Austin this fall after accepting a full-ride scholarship offer. I applied to their MGPS program because I'm interested in working for national security. A huge reason why I wanted to go back to school was to take advantage of the multiple critical language scholarships available only to students, such as Boren, CLS, FLAS, etc. Based on my personal interests, I've narrowed down my language learning selection to two languages: Russian and Persian. My questions/concerns are: 1. Is it feasible to learn a new language
  5. Has anyone been offered and been able to accept the FLAS and NSF GRFP in the same year? We cannot receive funding at the same time, but has anyone been able to be on reserve for their NSF GRFP while accepting the FLAS for their reserve year?
  6. Should we expect to hear back from the Harvard FLAS Fellowship committees before April 15th? I really don't want to commit to something before I know how much it will cost.
