  1. Hi everyone! I was recently admitted to Johns Hopkins SAIS (MA) and The Fletcher School (MALD), and while after countless hours of comparing I’ve gained a pretty good understanding of each program, I still feel very stuck on which to choose. Within the IR framework, I’ll be concentrating in security/conflict resolution with a further focus on the Middle East. I want to use grad school as a way to open myself up to career opportunities, but want to focus on the diplomatic track, research for think tanks/UN, or even the possibility of journalism which has always been a passion. 3. Hello all, I was recently accepted into both Fletcher's MALD program and the MPIA program over at Pitt/GSPIA. Unfortunately, my chances to visit these campuses were dashed by the COVID-19 outbreak. With that in mind, I was wondering if anyone could provide any insights into these programs, life in their respective hometowns, and opportunities for post-grad work, as I am weighing my options and exploring each potential path. As of now, I'm quite interested exploring how the topic of health fits into the field of security studies, especially when it concerns natural or man-made disaste
  4. Can anyone help out with a qualitative comparison of the two programmes? I've been accepted to both, but I know for sure that I will have to take up a substantial student loan in order to study at Fletcher. I was wondering if it would be worth it, or if I could gain a similar/better experience and job opportunities (minus a loan) at the Graduate Institute, Geneva? Also was wondering how much branding matters. Everyone around me seems to think that Fletcher is quite the name to have tagged to your CV, but don't seem to really think similarly about the Graduate Institute. Would love to hear some
  5. Hi all, I've been reading through the threads to get more insights into the programs I've applied to, but figured I'd ask here, in order to get people's opinions on some of the schools I've applied to/heard back from. Thank you so much in advance for your help! Some background: I'm an immigrant, have my undergrad from a top-20 uni in the U.S. Not entirely sure what career I'd pursue, but I've applied to international development as my concentration & hoping to work either in the i-dev sector or in the World Bank/UN. What are the general reputation of the following programs (bot
  6. So I just got an email with the subject line “an update from the fletcher school” from Dan Birdsall at admissions. It was personalized (addressed to me by name with things he enjoyed reading about in my application). Did anyone else get this/know if there’s a history of these being sent out and what it could mean? Probably just a courtesy thing to applicants while we wait, but I’m curious! Thanks!
  7. Hi Guys, Long (long) time lurker first-time poster here. Any input will go a long way in helping me decide which program is best suited to my personal situation. I am an Indian applicant looking to move to the US somewhat long-term . I am a lawyer by training and since graduating from law school I have worked as a policy professional for the past 3 years in not for profit thinktanks in India. My focus areas have been access to health, cybersecurity and judicial reforms, but I am sector and subject agnostic as I enter grad school. I have received admits from the following sch
  8. Hello, I want to work at UN/ government related positions after studying international relations/affairs or security. I would greatly appreciate it if I could get help choosing an appropriate school considering employment rate, prestige, and network. Thank you all very much in advance! Schools I got accepted into: 1) Fletcher (MALD) 2) GWU-ESIA (International Affairs) 3) DU - Josef Korbel (International Security/Relations) - 30k scholarship 4) Penn State - SIA (International Affairs)-25k scholarship
  9. I'm having trouble comparing the two programs, any opinions? I was accepted to the MALD degree at Fletcher, and the International Security at Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA) at Sciences Po. Sciences Po is a quarter the price and is in Paris. Fletcher didn't offer me any funding. Does anyone know how the Sciences Po alumni network is in the USA, or how well the degree is considered in the states? Any advice at all is super helpful! Thanks!
  10. Hey guys haven't seen any Fletcher thread so started this one I applied on Nov.15h just in time for the deadline. Checking my email every day even though i know its too soon. Last Year i applied to NYU and BU while i was a college senior and got into their MA programs however there was no scholarship so i declined both the offer. Good Luck to all of you

  14. Has anyone recently applied to the Map Your Future program at Fletcher? If so, what did your profile look like and do you have any important tips to offer? Appreciate the help!
  15. Hi everyone! I've recently received admissions notifications for grad school and decided to turn to The Grad Cafe for help and/or input in deciding which school I should attend. Hopefully i get some feedback soon, considering the deadline is on April 15! Anyway, a little background on myself. I am a 23 year old female person from Malaysia. Got my Bachelor's in International Relations from Boston University (Class of 2015) and am currently working as a researcher at a foreign policy think tank in my country. Hoping to go back to grad school this Fall 2017. I applied to all IR MA programs,
  16. Hey guys, I am having an issue that really is bothering me and I can't make my decision. I have been admitted to Fletcher, SAIS and Elliot and I'm completely stuck with my decision on which school to attend. I have received very little funding and will likely go into heavy debt with all three schools, yet thats another topic by itself. I simply cannot make a decision about which program to attend and have read, and reread the programs over and over again, yet I simply can't make up my mind. I am intending to step into foreign affairs after graduation and I currently am an undergradua
  17. Hello, would appreciate thoughts regarding graduate school decisions/comments from people in the same boat. Interested in the Middle East, development, and human rights. I have State Dept. experience and did some volunteer NGO work in Lebanon. Accepted to: Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey - International Policy and Development MA program ($14k fellowship over 2 years) George Washington University - Middle East Studies MA program, concentration in International Affairs and Development ($5k/year fellowship) - waiting on another fellowship that would fully
  18. Hi everyone! I submitted my application for the Fletcher MALD program by the early notification deadline and heard back from them recently. They've said that they will hold my application and review it relative to the applications they receive by the regular deadline. Can someone tell me what the chances are of being admitted if your application is reviewed a second time? Thanks in advance.
  19. Hello everyone, I would like to hear your opinions on which school would better suit my interests and background. I think I have a pretty good profile. I am an international lawyer, with 3 years of work experience with UNHCR, currently accepted a position to work in the Mediterranean crisis in Greece. I have an LLB (Bachelor of Laws) from my country, and an LLM at a relatively known and respected US school in the international law field. I also did an internship at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague. I speak spanish, portuguese, a bit of french and
  20. Hi Gradcafe. Long time lurker, first time poster. I'll get right to the point: I'm supposed to be starting my first semester at Fletcher in January, and I'm having some serious concerns about the value of attending the program. Would love any input from current or past Fletcher students about whether or not getting a MALD is worth the price of admission. I realize that this is a subjective question to a large degree, so to help I'll detail myself briefly. I'm slightly older than Fletcher's median student, relatively debt-free from undergrad, interested in pursuing a career in internationa

  23. Hello, I am planning on applying to the MALD program at Fletcher school. I do not have full time work experience, but I do have the experience of working on a couple research papers of international relevance, working for a year at an NGO founded by Gandhi (teaching members of the organization English and conducting skill building workshops for destitute women). I have also interned for a year at a private wealth management firm and at Goldman Sachs during the summer. I additionally worked under a government official to help him conduct a study on the impact of a government subsidy scheme
  24. Hi there, Just thought I'd start a thread on Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy too as there be blogs for all the other big IR schools. I got accepted with EN deadline (very excited!!) but havent received any news on funding. Has anybody heard back from Fletcher on the funding they provide? I had also got into SIPA but received no $$$...hoping it isnt the same case with Fletcher, cuz Fletcher really was my top choice! Good luck for those who are waiting to hear!
  25. Hello, I've applied for a Masters Degree with a focus on International Developments and was accepted to WWS, JHU (SAIS - IDev), MSFS (IDEV), SIPA and Fletcher. I've received varied funding from each school (WWS of course is completely funded). I'm trying not let funding be my only factor in my decision making process but would appreciated others opinions regarding my choices. I'm interested in the intersection between the public and private sector. WWS has the least business focused curriculum but it has a strong CORE curriculum as well as the brand name. SAIS/DC are more professionally
