    McGill Fall 2019 Cohort

I know it’s usually hard making friends in Grad school because it’s way different to undergrad. Here is a place for incoming McGill grad students to meet each other! Maybe we could state which program we are doing and where we are from?

    Online Advice for Grad Students

Hi all! I know I am just an applicant, but I wanted to share some online advice/things grad students can relate to that I found. https://www.fastweb.com/college-search/articles/the-50-things-only-grad-students-will-understand https://www.fastweb.com/college-search/articles/the-12-grad-school-survival-tips I think it would be awesome if we could create a collection of online things for new grad students, or just grad students in general, here.
  3. Hi folks, I'm not sure if there's a thread already but here goes. I'm in a two-year program in writing and publishing. First semester was incredible, inspired, productive, fun. This semester not at all. Different faculty, boring methodology, uninspired. I'm still writing for myself but 10 weeks in and only one 5 page essay has been workshopped. Is this normal? To be expected?
  4. I'm picking my clinic placements and I'm trying to balance what I really want to do (ENT/Swallow) with what will give me the contact hours I need. Are there any KU students that can tell me what are the average contact hours for any of the following: Lawrence Campus FACS LEAP SAT KUMC ENT Clinic Garden Terrace Swallow Parkinson Children's Place I know I can really clean up hours-wise if I do LAP/RAP but I really, really don't want to do that!! ARGH!
  5. Hello all, I'm starting to think about who I will be asking for letters of recommendation. I have a few professors that I know will be more than happy to write them, one's I've worked with before and I'm not really concerned with asking them or what they'll say. I've been working as an undergrad researcher since I was a freshman (4 years now! wow!) and have worked with, and published with, a few grad students. They have now since received their PhD and are doing very well for themselves (One is a senior researcher at Dow and another at Boston Scientific). They are people I worked with for years and know me both on a professional as well as a personal level. Is it acceptable for one of them to write a letter of recommendation and is it advised? I think that they would provide some depth to my application with a more personal letter. Is that a dumb idea and should I just stick with the professors? Thanks!
