    Argument Essay for GRE pt. 1

    Hey, guys! I hope you're doing awesome today. I wanted to know if you guys were willing to grade my essay for the GREs. I would appreciate it! To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major cities. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. Societies allowed for growth in many areas of human knowledge and technology. Many agree that in our globalized world, societies must understand one another through interactions, academic or otherwise. Because new ideas tend to be efficiently explored in the academic system, the academic has a priority in studying these cultures. To do so, academics should look take time to look beyond major cities to study the most important characteristics of a society. Many cultures are highlighted in major cities but many major cities are a mixture of different cultures combining traditions. In fact, the greater the population, the more fused cultures come about, limiting the representation of the culture that experts know of the society. Cities that hold a high population (e.g. New York) generally hold “Koreatowns” or “Chinatowns” which represent nothing of the W.A.S.P. culture in rural America. Many of these Chinatowns and Koreatowns are almost like you’re residing in their society. While one may argue that represents the culture of the area, towns with large populations of minorities tend to display the culture of the local area, not the general society of the nation. The nation itself can also hold societies that are nomadic in nature, making it impossible to find a major city of that society. Nomads are not keen on building infrastructure the same way non-nomadic nations aren’t keen on constantly moving to find food. These nomadic people tend to be very difficult to study because of their constant movement within the nation. A small representation of that society may appear in major cities, but these people are not permanent residents of these cities. In order to effectively study them, experts would have to follow their interactions while living with the tribe. The study of culture is very important to not only the society itself, but to other cultures so interactions are not harmful or deleterious to progress. Nevertheless, one will not find every aspect of a society in a small group of locations versus multiple locations.

A 'society' is an amalgamation of varied aspects of life - social, economic, political, demographic, geographic. The study of major cities, while necessary, may not always be sufficient to understand the important characteristics of a society. A study of major cities could reveal multi-faceted view of the society. This study, essentially, could help bring out the overarching, interconnected themes or characteristics. For example, knowledge of social structures such as existence of a patriarchal system could lead us to answer economic questions such as - "Why are daughters not considered rightful owners of properties?" In a similar fashion, a geographic survey could reveal why certain sections of the population have a longer life expectancy than others, or why they are more immune to certain infectious diseases than other. Furthermore, a study of the political climate could unravel answers about the economic environment of the society - a politically unstable regime will most likely result in an economic crisis. One can, however, argue that simply focussing the lens on major cities might not always be enough to understand the important characteristics of a society, since smaller and maybe not-so-important cities add as much to the overall fabric of society as major cities do. More often than not, that is the case. However, it must be noted that major cities are more representative of the overall society - that is, they present an aggregated view of the entire region than present discrete chunks of information. Hence, a study of major cities could prove useful while trying to understand the important characteristics of the overall society. However, if one has adequate time and resources at her disposal, it will be more prudent to study both major and minor cities, to bring out more exhaustive results.

    GRE Practice Essays

    Hi! I'm new to the GradCafe and I'm not sure if this is where I should post this, but I thought I'd give it a shot. I'm currently studying for the GRE (taking it Aug 24th), and I wrote my first practice Issue and Argument Essays. I'm looking for someone to go over, critique, and score them.   8. I am a Biology major / Statistics minor applying to programs in Statistics and Biostatistics. I received (flat) C's in both Cell Biology and Genetics (and the rest of the Bio grades were not all A's lol)...so I've been concerned lately about how admissions committees will view these. I've heard people say you're wasting your time to apply if you have C's in the undergrad courses directly related to your prospective graduate study. I guess what I'm wondering is... Is Biology considered DIRECTLY related to Biostat in this way? From my perspective, I consider these as somewhat irrelevant to my future interests. I've spoken with many graduate students in Biostatistics who told me their experiences have had far stronger focus on Statistics than on Biology course material (and the most Bio they took was Epidemiology). In my statement I emphasize that my specific interests are in clinical and pharmaceutical applications of statistics. I know maybe I'm just being silly... But I can't help but wonder constantly how admission committees will look upon my less-than-stellar Bio grades. Sorry for rambling, but thank you for reading this I know it's not fair to ask for judgments on my strength as an applicant on the whole with only this tiny bit of information, so I'm not asking for that--just about the strength of connection adcoms draw between bio and biostat in general >< I can tell that the C's certainly aren't helping my application, but how much do you suppose they'll hurt? Any brief input / insight at all would really be greatly appreciated!!!!

    Issue Essay feedback

    Hello! I am taking the GRE in a month and I have taken a couple of practice tests now. I would really appreciate it if I can get feedback on this Issue Task essay I wrote for one of them. I'm not sure how this works in the forum but I'm happy to correct someone else's issue task to return the favor. Let me know if you want for me to correct yours as an exchange for some feedback on mine. - Michelle The best way to teach is to praise positive actions and ignore negative ones. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position. Teaching is a hard feat: as a teacher, you have to encourage positive behaviors and discourage negative behaviors, all while keeping your students motivated. Therefore, disregarding negative behaviors when teaching and just praising positive behaviors does not foster learning. Just praising positive behaviors should be avoided. Negative actions should be analyzed and talked though to make sure the student learns from their mistakes. A good example that shows the importance of correcting negative behaviors is studying for the GRE. My goal while studying was to learn all the topics the GRE was going to test me in and answer as many questions correctly. While doing practice questions, I kept track of the questions I had answered correctly and questions I had answered incorrectly. If I had just rewarded myself for the times I got questions right and ignored those which I answered incorrectly, I would have not made much progress. If I had not corrected the questions I got wrong, I would have kept on making the same mistakes when answering future questions that test me on similar topics and kept on getting the questions wrong. Therefore, it was essential for me to go back to the negative questions I answered ad see what flaws I had in my thought process for answering to get the questions right the next time. Take for example a child who is being taught good habits at home. The child is taught to put their dishes in the sink every time they are done eating. Every time the child remembers to put the dirty plates in the sink, the parents praise the child and the child learns to put the dishes in the sink after eating. Moreover, the parents want the child not to interrupt people when other people are not talking. Although the parents want to teach the child this, the parents ignore the faults of the child every time the child interrupts someone. This will probably make the child keep on interrupting people when the other person speaks because they are not being told not to do it. If the child was told by their parents to not interrupt someone when they are talking, the child would learn from their mistakes and get better at not interrupting people. This does not mean that praising good actions is detrimental to learning. Praising good actions reinforce on the person to keep on behaving the same way and therefore learn. If I had not rewarded myself when I got a section right in the GRE, I would have been burned out when studying. Rewarding myself every time I got a question right helped me be motivated in learning. If the parents of the child had not praised the child every time they put the dirty dishes on the sink, the child would have no motivation to learn this behavior. Rewarding positive actions is not enough to foster thorough learning and would not help people learn from their mistakes. Correcting negative behaviors when learning something is necessary to foster thorough learning. If only positive behaviors were praised, negative ones would keep on happening, and people would just keep on doing the positively reinforced ones and not the negative ones.Therefore, the best way to teach is to reinforce positive behaviors and correct negative behaviors.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position. My response: In the before mentioned statement the author states that instilling a sense of cooperation, not competition, will better prepare the youth of a society for leadership roles. To the contrary, I myself agree that with a correct balance of the two qualities, competition will induce leadership for the next generation of leaders. First, one must recognize the fact that competition rears growth. This is what makes the capitalistic economy in America so great. For instance, businesses of all kinds are able to compete with each other to better appeal to their consumer. In order to maintain and increase productivity, they must continue trying and experimenting with the product so that consumer is more likely to buy from their company. This is advantageouss to the society, because -since these companies are allowed to compete- new and improved products are available to choose from. In addition, creativity will spark one's imagination to think critically and for oneself. If one is only taught to be exactly obedient in all things, then we could not grow as a society, thus hindering the creativity, as partly discussed in the above paragraph. In short, every member in the society would be nothing more than a robot, not able to think for themselves. At the same time, competition could easily be taken to the extreme. Someone that is too competitive can be a danger to society. For example, in presidential elections, some politicians will go as far as to lie and spread falsehoods about the opposing candidate in an effort to win the vote from the public. In this way, too much competition could damage a person's good caracter or create ill will for another person. One must remember to balance competition with a good dose of cooperation as to be fair to all parties in society. In the end, when preparing the next generation for taking on leadership roles in society, the older generation must not forget to teach friendly competition along with a fair dosage of cooperation. Forgetting to teach one without the other would mean shorthanding those young people, and suffering from inevitable future consequences.

Reason: It is primarily in cities that a nation's cultural traditions are preserved and generated. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claim is based. With money comes services, universities, museums, highways and clean streets. Therefore, governments should financially support the nation’s major cities in order for them to thrive. Major cities are not only the nation’s source of economic power, they are also cultural centers and residential places. However, what the statement seems to assume is not entirely true: a nation’s cultural traditions are not better preserved and generated in major cities. On the contrary, rural areas tend to change less than capitals and therefore preserve old traditions better. Although governments must support major cities, the reason for it is not the conservation of traditions. First, major cities require more funds because a larger amount of people inhabit them. From the 44 million people that live in Spain, 4 live in the city of Madrid. They need more funds for schools, parks and hospitals than a city like Burgos (170.000 inhabitants) needs. As in other major cities, Madrid’s inhabitants come from different regions within the country and also from different neighboring countries. And generally, the ones who move to larger cities are young people. This variety results in a melting pot, where the traditions of Spain are diluted. In Burgos and other Castilian small towns live older people who teach the traditions to their youngsters. For example, dancing jotas is more common in smaller towns and rural areas than it is in Madrid. In addition, the government should provide financial support to major cities in order for them to create more employment and improve businesses. Spain relies on cities like Madrid, Barcelona and Bilbao for the creation of wealth. Therefore, it should also invest in them to promote new enterprises and industries. The counterpart is that this economic power persuades international companies to establish stores in major cities. Whereas there is just one McDonalds in Burgos, there are hundreds in Madrid. This inhibits the preservation of cultural traditions. Local restaurants cannot compete with the mass force of international enterprises. Finally, major cities are cultural centers with good universities and museums. In big cities, there are more people that demand these cultural goods. Government should assign funds for major cities so they can culturally thrive. Museums and universities do provide new input to create cultures and traditions, but not necessarily to preserve them. They bring along international students, faculty and expositions, which may endanger national traditions or may foster them (if there are museums and classes dedicated to them). It could be both ways. Major cities are a nation’s center, and governments should invest in them because of the population that they have, the economic growth they bring and the cultural goods they provide. But in major cities cultural traditions are not better preserved than in small towns or in the countryside. It is generally the contrary, because in small towns there is less change than in capitals.

Essay: People make decisions every day. Some of them are related to ourselves, some of them involve other people. While a poor decision in one case can be harmless, it can also play a crucial role in people's lives in another situation. Sometimes emotion-based decisions can lead to a good outcome, and we usually define people who make successful emotion-based decisions as people with good intuition. However, in mots case emotion-based decisions can lead to dramatically negative outcomes. Analysis should be done with a clear head, so the results can be interpreted without any biases. If a person has already made a decision based on his intuition, or based on his liking or disliking of a certain thing, then it is absolutely useless to analyze the situation. A person can always find an explanation for a situation, or justify his/her decision if he already knows the final goal. In some situations our decisions involve lives of others. A judge, for example, has a tremendous responsibility on his/her shoulders. What would happen to our society of judges made all decisions in criminal cases based on their emotions? How many good-looking murderers, who can easily mislead people with their fake smiles, will be free and continue to make their horrible deeds? The same argument is valid for doctors, engineers, and many more other professions where people need to make decisions based on facts and facts only. It is worth noticing that in some circumstances, emotions can play a positive role. Business world is a good example here. Directors, owners, and business strategists do not always equipped with all information that they need in order to make a decision. However, a decision needs to be made. Steve Jobs, a famous american entrepreneur, had to make many decisions without having sufficient information about consumers and a market, because the business he was in--personal computers--was absolutely new, and there were no data available. So Steve Jobs made many decisions, listening to his intuition, what we also can call "emotion-based" decisions, and then he made his employees work to prove those decisions were right. In the end, his decisions were right, and Apple Computers became the most valuable company in the world. Approach to making decisions should be taken with regard to the circumstances. Sometimes we have plenty of information to perform an analysis, and then make conclusions based on the data we get. However, this is not always the case. A person has to understand a consequences of his/her decisions. If someone's life depends on your decision--you should base it on facts. Doctors, judges,police offices, and engineers should understand that lack of information cannot always justify an emotion-based decision.
