Hello everyone I am a master student at Georgia Tech, in Electrical Engineering. My major is Signal Processing. I want to continue to PhD but change my field to a more creative/graphics side. I am a digital illustrator on the side. There is also some geographical conditions for choosing phd school. I have made the following list, and would really appreciate some comments. It would be good if the school is in a nice city, not bad crime situation or middle of nowehere. Planning to apply to CS except for MIT, where it is Media Arts and Sciences. Thank you ! 1) MIT (Media lab) 2) CMU 3) Princeton 4) Columbia 5) NYU 6) University of Pennyslavania 7) Yale 8.) Maryland 9) Rutgers 10) Brown 11) Virginia Tech 12) Stony Brook I want to ideally choose 2 high ranked, 2 middlish and 2 safer ones

I'm interested in applying to Stats and Data Science MS programs. The USNWR and AMSTAT top schools list is helpful (for stats), but I'd like to see a larger list. I've come across some interesting programs just by looking up x school (not on the best ranked lists) and looking up programs they're offering. Does anyone know of any resources that post a list of all data science programs and/or statistics programs in the United States? This resource from CSU East Bay is kinda what I'm looking for, but it's dated. Looking up data science programs is trickier-- no USNWR or AMSTAT lists, but instead a lot of "20 Best Value Schools for Data Science Masters" type results. A little bit off-topic, but should I just stray away from considering schools that don't score highly on USNWR (or are even unranked)? It seems like a ton (most?) of the posters on GradCafe are only seriously considering Ivy-League or similar status schools. I'm sure the elite schools consistently beat out lower ranked schools across most metrics, but is it to the point where I shouldn't even consider the lower ranked?

It has been my impression that the GRE Lit Subject test has been slowly falling out of fashion. Despite that, we still have to play the game, don't we? From what I've seen, very few schools require it. Does anyone have a list of the schools that do? When I applied to UVA for my Masters, they accepted me without receiving my score, but since they technically required it, I needed to send my score anyway for administrative purposes. That sent a message to me: "We require this, but it is not that important." That being said, my score was...uh, not very good. I feel compelled to retake it before I apply for PhDs next cycle. But at the same time...maybe my poor score doesn't matter that much? Maybe it's just a formality? We know it's the writing and personal statement that stand out more to committees, but then why should we even bother? What are others' perspective on the importance of the Lit test? What were the best ways to prepare? How long did you study? Did you rely mostly on coursework/background, or additional study materials? Perhaps it would be more beneficial to have a separate thread for listing programs that require it, but I thought I'd give this a shot first.

Help in selecting colleges for PhD in machine learning
Shivam1990 posted a question in Questions and Answers
Hello I'm planning to apply for Ph.D. in Machine Learning(Fall 2018). I've been researching a lot about various colleges where I would want to apply. I have made a list of places according to the area of my interest and the research that's currently going on. I would be really grateful if you can help me in selecting from the lot on the basis of the value of the place and the availability of funding. These are the two most important filters I want to apply on my list. A number of 10-15 universities would be helpful. PS: I understand that selection of a college is based on other individualistic parameters as well, which I will use. But, please provide your valuable insights based on the two points mentioned above. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- University of Bristol TU Dortmund U Penn University of Maryland Arizona State University TU Darmstadt Cambridge Purdue Columbia University FU Berlin Georgia Tech Aalto University John Hopkins HU Berlin Brown University of Waterloo Cornell University University Wuerzburg University of Wisconsin-Madison University of British Columbia University of Toronto University of Bonn University of Montreal University of Amsterdam University of Alberta University of Stuttgart University college of London University of Surrey UT Austin University of Munich University of Michigan University of Southhampton Saarland University University of Waikato Universiy of Washington Unversity of Nottingham Technical University of Munich UC Berkely University of Illinoi University of Exeter University of Helsinki -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Should I bother applying to NYU, Icahn School of Medicine, University of Washington, and Yale Neuroscience Phd programs...My reasoning for not is that I could use time/resources on lower tier schools. I have an undergrad GPA of 3.59(small LAC), masters neuroscience(not ranked) 3.90, and 1 year of intense electrophys research GREs kind of bad on essay, 17%. 85% on math/verbal.
