GPA: equivalent to 4.0, graduated joint first in the cohort MSc Mathematics, Minor in CS, ~top 10 German university. GPA equivalent to 4.0, full marks in every exam BSc Mathematics, Minor in Economics, ~top 10 German university. GPA equivalent to 3.8, 3rd in cohort of 50. RELEVANT COURSEWORK ACROSS ALL DEGREES: Linear Algebra, Advanced Linear Algebra, Algebra, Real Analysis, Complex Analysis, Fourier Analysis, Functional Analysis, Probability Theory (including measure theory), Statistics, Optimization, Numerical Analysis, ODEs, PDEs, Scientific Computing, Machine Learning, Reinforcement Learning, Stochastic Calculus, Stochastic Control, several courses in financial mathematics (stochastic volatility, mathematics of fixed income markets, numerical methods for option pricing), Monte Carlo Methods, Time Series Analysis, and some more. RESEARCH EXPERIENCE: MSc thesis Oxford: Worked on machine learning applications to risk management. No publication yet, but am preparing one with my professor. Got awarded a Europe wide price for the best MSc thesis in quant finance selected from 13 European quant finance programs. Will get strong letter from supervisor. MSc thesis Germany: Thesis about Levy processes in financial math. Developed my own financial model, compared with calibration performance of standard methods. No publication from this but will get very strong letter from supervisor. Several other smaller uni projects probably not worth mentioning RELEVANT WORK EXPERIENCE: Worked for two years as a quant researcher in a top tier prop trading firm. I don't know if admission committees would consider this research experience even though it technically is. I am not allowed to talk about specifics due to confidentiality. Two other internships in quantitative risk management. GRE: Not taken as not required by most schools. Might take one end of November for programs with deadlines in January. I am planning to apply to PhDs in statistics, mathematics and operations research which have groups focussing on financial applications: Harvard Statistics Princeton ORFE Columbia IEOR Columbia Statistics UChicago Computational and Applied Maths UChicago Statistics Yale Applied Math (also considering stats and data science) NYU Courant CMU Math Stanford MS&E Berkely IEOR Cornell ORIE I am not sure whether my profile is strong enough for some of these so would be thankful for opinions.

Undergrad Institution: Smaller school (St. Louis University) Major: Math Minor: CS GPA: 3.97 (Summa Cum Laude) Type of Student: Domestic White Male GRE General Test: Have not taken yet, though I expect high scores. Programs Applying: Statistics PhD or Math PhD Research Experience: Some in Number Theory. Was working on a paper, but COVID interfered big time. I'm working on it again now. Hopefully I can finish soon. Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Received our school's award for the top performing math student. Letters of Recommendation: My academic advisor, who I believe thinks very highly of me. My Number Theory professor/research advisor (a little worried about his if I don't finish the research paper). Professor from my Bayesian Statistics class, who I believe thinks very highly of me. Professor from undergraduate and graduate Analysis, who I'm confident thinks very highly of me. Schools: Looking for recommendations for Statistics options. I've spent the last four years planning to do pure math. But in the last few weeks I've been seriously considering instead doing computational statistics, or Machine Learning. Still haven't decided. A large factor will be whether or not I can get into a good grad school for math. I'm looking for any advice you can give on school recommendations. I'm trying to apply to very few places. My financial situation is good enough not to qualify for support, but bad enough that I would really like to not spend much at all on application fees. Also, for schools not requiring the General GRE, how bad would not taking it be? I'd like to avoid costs there as well, if possible, though I believe it may not be. For my recommendation letters, I'm going to talk to my advisor to get more personalized help/advice.
  3. Hi, I have received several math phd program offers including Wisconsin Madison, Georgia Tech, Purdue, Texas A&M. I am now interested in analysis and differential equations, having learnt some basic knowledge about viscous conservation laws and infinite dimensional Morse theory. Please help me about selecting a fit program for me. Any related information would be appreciated.

(I graduate this semester and don’t yet know if I’ll be able to take these): Real Analysis II Data Structures GRE General Test: 318 (Verbal: 159 | Quantitative: 159 | Writing: waiting to hear) Research Experience: Participated in a reading course/looked at some open problems related to lattice cryptography for one summer. I also have about six months of experience in a cognitive neuroscience lab. Extracurricular stuff: Participated in an informal reading program with a grad student, where I studied the elliptic curve factorization algorithm and algorithms for Delaunay triangulation. I also gave a talk on Delaunay triangulation. Honors/Awards: LSAMP scholar, Dean’s List (multiple semesters), President’s List (once) Interests: cryptography, graph theory, number theory, mathematical biology, computational geometry Misc. Info: I dropped out of college a couple of times and failed an entire semester back in 2012. My grades the last couple of years, especially since switching to a math major, have turned around significantly. I also have years of irrelevant work experience, but a history of being promoted. Letters of Recommendation: A math prof that I’ve had several courses with and done research with haven’t asked anyone else yet, but will likely be asking my analysis, calc 3, and algebra professors and just seeing who feels they can write a strong letter, if any. I don’t know any of them well, but I’ve been to their office hours a couple of times and I have/had good grades in their classes.   5. Do graduate schools look down upon applicants who do not immediately want to pursue a career in academia? If I want to do something in between graduating with my Ph.D. and my academic career, should I leave that out of my personal statement? Specifically, I am seeking admission to a Ph.D. program in mathematics. After getting my Ph.D. I want to enlist in the Navy and become a SEAL. After I leave operational capacity, I want to serve as a mathematics professor at the Naval Academy or the Naval Postgraduate School. Should I include this in my personal statement, or only mention wanting to become a professor one day?
