  1. Hey everyone. I've been accepted into both CMU's MHCI and UW's MHCDE programs and I've been having a difficult time making a decision between the two. If anyone here has any insights on how the programs stack up against one another I'd really appreciate hearing from you! I'll break down some info about myself and my thoughts about the programs for people to weigh in. A bit about myself: 1. Coming directly from undergrad in cognitive science, CS, and english 2. Minimal work experience (some freelance graphic design work, contract web development work, start up proof of concept & pilot project with industry partner) 3. I care about improving my skill set and gaining a variety of thoughtful portfolio projects 4. I'm looking to kickstart my career in HCI after graduation at a big 4 company Thoughts on CMU MHCI: 1. I like that the name carries weight in the industry. Hoping this will help with my lack of work experience 2. Really active and friendly alumni network. May be a consequence of the small cohorts each year? 3. All students full time, good balance of students from undergrad and from industry Thoughts on UW MHCDE: 1. Location in tech hub makes networking a lot easier. Spoken to curr students who can draw a direct line from attending networking events to their current job offers 2. Seems to also have a good amount of industry sponsored project courses 3. Program is heavily geared towards part time students/students coming from industry. Very few students coming directly from undergrad (less than 10% from undergrad in 2017-18 incoming cohort) so stats on how much grads make and their placements after the program may not be reliable indicators for me Anyone in a similar situation or have been in a similar situation please reply! Hope to hear some other people's thoughts on the matter. Thanks in advance everyone
  2. I wrote a piece comparing MHCI and MDes program at CMU. I'm a junior student currently in the BHCI program, and I've been doing a lot of research on this while deciding which is the right program for me - a lot of the insights were not available on the Internet. Hopefully, it's helpful to some people! https://medium.com/@songyh1996/mdes-vs-mhci-carnegie-mellon-university-bfb185c71e63
  3. Anyone applied to CMU METALS (Master of Educational Technology and Applied Learning Science)? I applied to the METALS program but has not heard from it yet, nor is there any visit on my portfolio. One can only wait.
  4. Short version: should I do into debt at my dream school, or accept a full-ride to my third choice? I was thrilled when I got into my dream program, the MHCI program at CMU. I never thought I would get in, and I feel like I won the lottery. Then today I was offered $80,000 scholarship from University of Michigan. Suddenly everything feels very real. I think CMU is a much better fit-- I want to make things, not research. I love that it is a professional program, and I like that it is smaller, and very focused curriculum. The curriculum seems perfectly tailored to my interests. Not going to lie, I also like the prestige. What I am worried about is that the economy will crash and I will find myself in debt and in a no-longer-high-in-demand profession. Not having to pay tuition would really help me get my adult life started on the right track (I am only 22, and this is my first time leaving my home town). I'm probably looking at upwards of $20k debt at CMU (I have savings and leftover Florida Prepaid to get through the first 2ish semesters). Then there is the University of Washington's HCDE program. I haven't even heard back from UW yet, but I visited last year and it was my second choice after CMU (really the first choice, since CMU was such a "reach".) If I get in, it will make this decision even harder. (UW curriculum is more my style than UM, and tuition is cheaper.) Another factor is that my husband is also moving with me, and while he is very supportive, I hate the idea of dragging him to Ann Arbor because the job prospects for him are much slimmer than in a larger city (Seattle or Pittsburgh). I don't really want to live in AA either.
