    Compare CCA & MICA

Hi all!! I got two MFA offers now. One is from MICA-Maryland Institute of Art in Photographic and Electronic Media , the other is from CCA-California College of the Arts Fine Art program. I want to study photography and work in the photography or fashion industry. I know MICA is very good but the city, MICA in, Baltimore is very rough. The living expense is low. CCA is good as well but San Francisco is super expensive. Both of them are two years programs. I really really need to find good jobs after the graduate program. Do you guys have any suggestions? Is it worthwhile to invest huge amount money to develop a good community in San Francisco and find a job after? Or is it ok to study in MICA and find a job in San Francisco? Which school has a better reputation? Thank you !!!

    SVA Products of Design!

Hi! I got into the following programs. My favorite program is SVA as it seems like the most well-rounded program and that is important to me as someone coming without a design undergrad degree. But the price tag is very high... Anyone else thinking of these programs? SVA Products of Design MICA Social Design with $15,000 scholarship Parsons Design and Technology with 20% scholarship
  4. I've applied to several Low Res MFA programs. I'm a returning student and did not expect all these acceptances. Additionally, two schools have offered funding ranging from one-third to one-half. The other 3 have told me that there are offers but they do not yet have numbers available. Commuting is possible at SVA. The others would require 6-8 weeks per year in a dorm which sounds more hellish every time I think about it. Should I put on my big girl panties and go to SAIC as it is my first choice? Should I go to SVA because it is almost as highly ranked and I get to sleep in my own bed and make local connections even though I hate commuting? Should I go to MassArt because it is more affordable and I really liked the professor who heads the program? If any of the schools that haven't given me numbers yet turn out to be fullride, should I just automatically go there? Are any of these schools so crappy as to avoid consideration? Any so wonderful that I should automatically forsake all others? Do rankings even matter? Thanks for your help!

    Reasons for program choice?

I am curious as to why people choose the programs they chose. What are the strengths and offerings of each program that makes them so attractive to you? One thing in my research I have a tuff time finding out is why people are applying to the programs they are applying to. For instance, I want to apply to Columbia because of their faculty mentorship to students. Each student are teamed up with 2 mentors who regularly visit your studio, and go onto outings together with. A friend of mine who attended the program even curated a show with one of her mentors. For RISD, I have read that they focus on the commercial aspects of working as an artist within the market context. Business education for artists was seriously lacking in my undergraduate program, and something I regularly am reminded of as I continue with my practice. For places like Yale I can't find anything specific, just reputation, and alumni history. Grad school wasn't an option for me until unexpectedly the middle of this year, so now I'm just rushing to meet the deadline with you guys. So I would appreciate any information that would help my understanding of this question. Specifically am curious about Hunter and MICA
  6. Hey Grad Cafe, I'm a life-long sufferer of anxiety, who recently experienced a really bad bout of it after I started grad school at MICA in the fall of 2014. Lots of self-doubt, crippling panic attacks and a struggle to find adequate mental health care. So, for my graduate thesis project at MICA, I've been working on an app that translates anxiety therapy and self-care techniques into fun adventure games. Basically, my goal is to develop a tool that helps fill gaps in mental health care experienced by so many millennials. I recently started a non-profit crowdfunding campaign to support my research: igg.me/p/worry-quest/ Grad Cafe-ers, would you be able to contribute and/or spread the word about my project? I'm just over halfway funded with less than three weeks to go. The money will be used towards a trip that will provide me with professional mentorship, and the opportunity to test my anti-anxiety app in cities across the United States. Also, all contributions are tax-deductible donations to the Millennial Trains Project 501(c)(3) non-profit. I'm also open to advice for crowdfunding. Have any of you found any particular strategy to be really effective? If you have any questions, feel free to reply in the thread or email me at mbambach@mica.edu. Thanks!
