  1. Do graduate schools look down upon applicants who do not immediately want to pursue a career in academia? If I want to do something in between graduating with my Ph.D. and my academic career, should I leave that out of my personal statement? Specifically, I am seeking admission to a Ph.D. program in mathematics. After getting my Ph.D. I want to enlist in the Navy and become a SEAL. After I leave operational capacity, I want to serve as a mathematics professor at the Naval Academy or the Naval Postgraduate School. Should I include this in my personal statement, or only mention wanting
  2. When I was a young man I was stupid and a knucklehead, and eventually got administratively separated from the U.S. Marine Corps for insubordination. After much therapy and growing up, I've now gotten older and wiser, regret my previous stupidity, and am now in college slated to graduate with a 3.6 GPA and a Philosophy degree. I spent a year abroad in Barcelona, Spain learning Spanish to a conversational level and have several years of officer experience working in activist groups and organizations dedicated to improving the lives of people of color and poor folks. And if it is of any rele

Carleton: -Practical; Engineering focused courses -Co-Op, part of the Ottawa network -Courses are very interesting Calgary -More funding -I've heard that the faculty is tightly knit and definitely supports students -But isolated from Ottawa connections -Higher cost of living -Courses are theoretical Can anyone speak to either of these programs?

It's too early to be talking to my detailer and I'm not sure how off-track it is career-wise, so hesitant to voice my interest lest I get a reputation for wanting to get out of my community. Might not be the ideal place for this, but figured I'd give it a shot.
  5. I am an enlisted member in the US Air Force and will retire in five years. I would like to work in public policy or admin when I retire. I'm not sure if I want to work in government or for an NGO but I would like to be involved in policy work relating to military/veteran matters or to any of the other causes I care about.. I have a MS in Operations Management from the University of Arkansas (4.0 GPA) and a BS in Management from Embry Riddle University (3.9 GPA). Given my experience and current education level, is a degree in the field required in order to find employment in the field? Wh
