  1. Got accepted to UCF for a phd with fellowship, tuition waiver, and stipend so it should all be paid for. Rochester offered 40% off tuition and $500 one time fellowship. Arizona would count me as in state tuition, which would cap tuition and be about $10k less a semester than out of state. All are for the field of optics/optical sciences. When applying my hope was to go to the University of Rochester for a PhD, as the city, weather, and most important the research fits me best, but I got rejected and only accepted to their MS program. Would it be a mistake to take the o
  2. I'm a student of Electrical Engineering at Jadavpur University, India. My profile being as follows, please indicate if my research experience would outweigh my pretty average GPA : GRE: 323(160v+163q) TOEFL iBT: 107 CGPA: 8.2 /10 Research Experience: 4 Separate research projects : 1 in condensed matter physics, 2 in Optics , and 1 in High Voltage EM computation. Publications: 1 Publication in Frontiers in Physics ( impact 1.89) on condensed matter physics ( jointly first-authored )
  3. Hi all, Got admitted at UCF in College of Optics and Photonics PhD 2018. Would like to chat with some other people who got in!
  4. Hello everyone, I have been having trouble lately matching my profile with potential MS ECE programs and would greatly appreciate it if anyone could help me with shortlisting potential MS programs to apply to. I aim to apply mostly to universities in Canada and Europe, basically anywhere but the US (as I won't be able to take the GRE in time). I am also mainly looking for research/thesis based degrees, and preferably RA/TA funded degrees. My profile: Undergrad: B.Sc. ECE from an unknown institution internationally, but known regionally and undoubtedly one of the best nati
  5. Hi everybody! I'm Alex Solntsev from the University of Technology Sydney. Happy to join the community. I'd like to ask for your advice. We have several PhD positions with generous scholarships and excellent employment prospects upon graduation: applied optics in partnership with leading optical companies or fundamental optics co-supervised by guys regularly publishing in Nature X. PhD defense within 3 years after a bachelor degree. The trick is that the deadline (at least for industry-sponsored ones) is in a few weeks. What would be the best way to find students quickly aside from asking
  6. Hi all, I am a 2015 graduate in Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering (allied field of Electrical) and I spent the last few months working in an Optics lab in order to build my profile to get accepted for MS/PhD (open to both) in Applied Physics/ Electrical Engineering/ Optics. Note that in my undergraduate coursework, I've not had any courses related to Optics and it's my field of interest and therefore, I'm open to MS. So far I've received three offers- one funded PhD in Electrical, one unfunded MS in Applied Physics (2 years course) and a partially funded MS in Optics (1-2 years
  7. I'm an international student going to pursue my MS in Optics. I would like your reviews about these 3 colleges and would also like your help in choosing between the three. It would be very kind of you if you could compare University of Arizona, University of Rochester and CREOL, UCF on the basis of funding provided, TA/RA opportunities, Job opportunities after the completion of degree, the best course in each coll etc. I would like to know your choice if you had to choose between these colleges. Well I am planning to take up either Plasmonics or Fibre Optics as the sub area. So which college d
