  1. Y'all, I feel so lost right now. So, I got into my top choice for a PhD program, and I feel like there's so much ahead of me that I'm just stuck. Things are made so much worse by COVID and the uncertainty it brings, too! Can you all help me think through things I need to handle between now and starting classes? I'm a U.S. student doing a PhD program in Canada, so I know I need to handle a bunch of stuff with moving internationally (with my spouse and animals) and securing a student visa. I didn't receive funding automatically, but the program is super cheap (under $8500 CAD for 5 years). I still need to apply for fellowships, etc. After this, I just kind of get lost. Help!
  2. I’m a Vietnamese First-Year Mathematics student who really wants to pursue a PhD in Mathematics. What's needed to be approved for good PhD in Mathematics? (in detail). I know that it must need a IELTS/TOEFL degree, GRE, 3 letters, ... But at which score I will get approval from a graduate school in Top 50 over the world. How can I get that three letter in the best way I could? Give me as many as advices, experiences you have on what I need to do now to be a strong applicant in the future. And if possible, tell me more about your story in pursuing a PhD in Mathematics. Tell me more about your research, what did you do in your undergraduate... Suggest me some propriate universities, Professors, the corresponding branch in Mathematics that you've taken or know... Sorry if the question posted somewhere and if it's too general and too much. Thanks a lot. Please help me. : D Mathematics Lover.

  4. I am asking the previous applicants to share their experiences. What kind of questions you were asked? Should I prepare for technical questions?
  5. So it looks like a few people have heard some positive news from grad schools about upcoming interviews starting next month. How is everyone preparing? I know that I did some initial preparation when I was completing my applications, but I'm not too sure where to go from here. Every POI has published material, ongoing grants and recently completed work, lab websites/department biographies... But what is interview day/weekend really about and what kinds of questions should we be preparing for and what questions should we be asking as we are on these interviews? Happy Holidays!
  6. Same as title... Got an interview at a school where I have worked with a professor already, should I request an interview with them? Will they expect me to do so? @Neuro15 you usually have answers. Any thoughts?
  7. I'm planning to enroll as a full-time MPP student in the fall of 2018 and am wondering how best to prepare. I am almost 3 years out of college, where I was not a quant major. I also do not heavily use quant skills in my current job. I'm a little concerned about being fully up to speed in the fall. I've seen topics about online courses people have taken to bolster their application, but does anyone have suggestions for online courses that one can take to prepare for matriculation? What topics would you suggest (I'm thinking stats, calc, and microecon) and where have people had good experiences with online courses? Is there any benefit (that would justify the additional cost) to taking it for a grade? If you think online courses are not a good way to prepare, what have other people had success with? Thanks in advance for your help!
  8. I created a multiplayer vocabulary quiz web application. It is live at grequiz.com. In this quiz, you challenge your opponent with a word and answer their challenge question. Whoever gets the highest score in a round of five wins the game. Check it out at grequiz.com. I would love your feedback.
  9. Dear lovely people who I hope can help me. I had a Skype interview for a paid PhD placement in Sweden a few weeks back and have recently been invited to come and meet the supervisor and see the department/ university/ city in person. I know that other people have been invited to do likewise so this seems like the next stage of the interview process. I will be there for over 2 days, which is quite a long time, I think, and staying with the Supervisor. I would be hugely grateful if any one can give please me advice on how to prepare for this, or some information on what I should expect, I have never done anything like this before, so any advice will be useful. Thank you so much for your help, it is very appreciated. All the best with your PhD hunt/ your PhDs. Laura
  10. Hi all, I'm working on putting together some information for our new students when they make their decision. Information so far includes a list of apartments, the process of registering for classes, how to order your text books, etc. I wanted to check in here and see what would be helpful for YOU? I was in your shoes just last year, and I want to help my program make things as smooth of a transition as possible! Thanks
