  1. Hey guys! I haven't seen a thread about this so far. So I wanted to start it. I'm an international student going to Penn State this fall under the PhD Chemistry program.
  2. Last year PSU announced admission decisions in early March, so I’m getting anxious to hear! I’m an out of state applicant. I loved the city and their campus, but was most impressed by their emphasis on medical. I’m curious to hear why others applied here. Also would love to know if anyone has heard anything from them yet.
  3. Hi everyone! I'm getting started and planning ahead for the fall when I'll be applying to PSU's Counselor Education program, and I was wondering if anyone had any words of advice -- I applied to the PSU MSW program last year and wasn't accepted, which actually turned out to be fine because it made me reflect on exactly what program to pursue, and I've settled on an MFT Counselor track in the Graduate School of Education at PSU. That said, the application process last year was so stressful and it was obviously tough to be rejected, so I'm trying to come back much stronger this year. I have an undergraduate GPA of 3.4, and I have a bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in sociology. I've volunteered in a domestic violence shelter for about a year (it will be 1.5 years by the time applications are due) doing direct-service work with participants, and have worked in administration at a couple of nonprofits for the last 6 years. I'm hoping to take the prerequisite 'Intro to Counseling' course at PSU this fall as a non-degree seeking student to get a little more face-time at the university and possibly make some connections there (the admissions advisor I spoke to said it was a good starting point). Does anyone have any wisdom to share? For the MSW program, the piece that I wasn't fully aware of was how much emphasis they put on direct social work experience, and I think that's why I wasn't accepted. I'm curious to know if there are any pieces like that in the GSE Counselor master's program that I should try and address now. Thanks!
  4. Hello, I would like to kick off the PSU thread for 2018! Threads from previous years seem to be good sources of info for housing and other information about State College. My fiance and I will be moving to State College from Florida this coming fall, and, personally, I would love to hear some thoughts on moving to a cold climate, living in State College, and just generally meet some other (future) grad students! Looking forward to meeting some of you!

    Portland State Fall 2017

Hello!! I have not read much about anyone applying and/or being accepted to Portland State. I just got accepted on Friday, and will be attending in the Fall!! I am very excited. I am actually currently in an MSW program here in California, but I applied as a transfer student. Soo happy I got accepted. Is anyone else here going to attend PSU?

    PSU Rejection

I went onto my Penn State application today and it said they made a decision and were in the process of notifying students. Turns out I got a letter in the mail at home and didn't get in. As an undergrad student here it's super frustrating lol but if anyone is waiting and wondering, PSU has started rejecting
  7. So does anyone know about this fairly new Masters of Science in Additive manufacturing and Design program (established 2017)? I applied to it and got accepted as a self-supporting student. Did anyone else apply to it?

    MFA FALL 2018 APPLICATIONS

Portland State University: MFA, Art and Social Practice: interview 1/23 NYU: MA, Performance Studies: applied Bard: MFA, Sculpture: applied Queens College: MFA, Social Practice: application due 3/1 Queens College: MA, Media Studies: application due 3/15
  9. I'm currently deciding between Penn State MAS program and the Cornell MPS program. Both will be a one year program because I did my undergrad at PSU. As a current Penn State undergraduate I'm leaning towards the staying here because I'm familiar with the area, the professors, have a job, research hook ups, ect However, I know Cornell has very good name recognition. My main goal is to go straight into industry. I looked over the post graduate survey for Cornell and was unimpressed with the average salary (70k) seeing as a few months ago I turned down a 63k a year job hoping to get accepted into graduate school. I'm not aware of any Penn State version of post graduate survey. The price tag is about 22k for Penn State and Cornell is 52k in tuition alone. I could probably afford Cornell without too many loans (coming out of undergrad I have no loans) but I feel that the average starting salary should be higher to justify the double price tag. I'm wondering if anyone has any insight into which program could be better for me. I'm an American and I know most of Cornell MPS students are chinese internationals so I'm wondering if that's bring the average salary down significantly and that for a domestic student, the salary prospects are much better. Thanks in advance for any help.
  10. Hi all! I'm only applying to one PhD program so I am very nervous about getting admitted. Making it worse is that there is no information on here at all about my intended program. Is anyone else out there applying to the Earth, Environment, and Society PhD program at Portland State University?! Or has anyone previously applied or attended? Just looking for some people to commiserate with! Background stats for me: Undergrad: 3.0 GPA, UC Berkeley, Physics Masters: ~4.0 (no grades, written evaluations only), Evergreen State College, Environmental Science/Studies Experience: Tons of work experience in meteorologic data analysis for wind farms, coordinating educational programs, teaching college math/science, and working on science and sustainability with inmates in prisons. 1 conference paper, 1 conference presentation, 1 conference poster (AGU), 1 publication (chapter in book). Excellent letters of rec. GRE above average for PSU admits. Think I will get in? Cheers!
  11. does anyone familiar with PSU's biostatistics PHD program in the medical school? There are few information I can get from the internet, and they haven't have any PhD graduate, so dose anyone knows the pros or cons of this program? Thank you very much!!
  12. I live in Portland, OR, have worked at a community mental health agency for about two years now, and love it. I want to return to get my MSW and eventually become a LCSW. I grew up in Portland but my parents just moved to Oceanside, CA. I am 25. As I see it, I have two options: 1. Stay in Portland, work full time (at least attempt to) at my current job while doing the PSU program. Pros Already have built some connections in hospitals from current job, will make it easier for my internship I can work at my job after my MSW with guaranteed supervision to get to my LCSW Have a couple local friends Cons Paying for rent while going to school and working...sounds like a lot of debt uncertainty around field placement too. PSU would require me to work in a different area of the agency for my field placement and that could mean less pay while I still need to make same $$ for rent. distance from family and commitment to at least 3 years of stay (until licensed) weather is bad typically 2. Move to Oceanside, live with parents, go to SDSU Pros Free rent and food Beach Opportunity to get out of my niche Cons unfamiliar area- meeting new people can be hard at first California cost of living Unsure how difficult it would be to get internship at a clinic with high # of client hours in Southern California cost- out of state tuition is $372 per unit, SDSU site says its $6,696 for 2 semesters. I'm confused as to if there's 9 units or more per term because there's 5 classes the first term. While I must make the decision, I am hoping to get some feedback from others- have you heard good/bad things about either school? Cities? Cost of living? Has anyone done PSU program while working full time? Can you be paid for your field placement? For SDSU, how many units are in a term? Accoeding to to my math, PSU and SDSU are adding up to be about to same cost- PSU is about 6k less for the 2 years but favoring in paying for my rent and bills, it evens out. I'm not sure if I'm doing the math correctly because it's surprising that in state tuition is close to out of state for SDSU. Any input is appreciated, thank you!
  13. Hey all, I'll be starting the 2-year MSW campus program at Portland Stat in fall. Just wanted to touch base with anyone else who's doing the same. I'm also finishing my undergrad right now at PSU, so if you're new to the school and have any questions I'd be happy to help if I can. Josh
  14. Hey friends! Other than the email we received a couple weeks ago, have you all been accepted, wait listed, or rejected to PSU? I'm hoping to hear back soon.
