  1. As I, like several others, might find myself facing a choice between NYU and programs in other—far cheaper—cities, I am hoping that there might be a current NYU student or two hanging around that could share their experiences living in New York on the NYU English program funding. I know the finding package is robust, but I am worried about, among other considerations, rent and the cost of food. Grateful for any insight anyone can provide!
  2. Hello everyone. I'm from Egypt, & I'm moving into Carbondale, Illinois next August to start my PhD. I'd like to ask as an international student who can't come to Carbondale until early August, would it be preferable to me to stay temporarily in the first days with someone or in a hostel while I look over studio/1-bed apartments on reality to decide which to rent (so I don't get stuck in something that turns to be bad) OR is it better that I just finish things online before I come & just go ahead & rent online so that when I come I don't find that all the good deals have been taken already?
  3. Hello, I am starting a PhD at MIT this fall, I'm international and the process to rent an apartment is very confusing. They ask for huge upfront payments and they say that they would return it after an "application" process. They are also concerned with the fact that I am international, they ask for co signers, proofs of income, I-20s and so on. The thing is that apartments are quickly renting (at least they say so but from what I have seen online that is in fact the case) this time of the year in Boston and of course I don't have my I-20 yet as the university just opened the applications for them and I just completed it. Has anyone gone through this or knows how this works? It would help a lot. Thanks!
  4. Looking for a 3rd roommate in Vermillion, SD! Lease starts on August 1st. Rent is $365 + utilities. 1st floor apartment, 3 bed/3 bath, washer and dryer in unit, dishwasher, large closets. Main space of apartment is furnished. Prefer female upperclassman college or graduate student. Feel free to email me for more information at kathryn.hefta@coyotes.usd.edu!!!
  5. If the rental costs are at around $1000/month and I'm staying for 5 years, then it all adds up to $60k that will go permanently down the drain. If I bought a house worth around $60k (maybe with some temporary assistance from my parents), however, then I would be able to resell the house and I wouldn't lose money on renting costs. With that said, feel free to use this thread for more general inquiries too (I'm interested in hearing about what situations others are facing, as I'd like this thread to be useful for everyone).
