  1. Hello, I am applying for Ph.D. programs in mechanical engineering in the U.S. Many people on this forum advise that you should contact a professor to inquire about Ph.D. openings before applying. I believe that I followed all the suggestions on other forums on writing a precisely targeted email to each PI. However, in response, I only got a brief response along the lines of "We don't have any openings right now, but we encourage you to apply for Fall 2020" from those that did reply. How do I read this response? Does it mean that its pointless to apply to that school, as there is no o
  2. I was accepted to a Master's program, but I intend to enroll in a PhD program (accepted to a few PhD programs). Thus, I will be declining the M.S. program offer. However, I was invited to an in-person visit and online (via Zoom) Q&A session. Should I decline the offer before these visit days or attend the online Q&A as a courtesy..? I'm nervous about declining schools ugh
  3. So, since I don't want to wait for Purdue to admit me after 4/15, I chose to accept RPI's offer 3 days ago. However, I tried sending them the formal signed letter, then send them an email asking what else I need to submit before the deadline, then call the coordinator (each of them a day apart), but zero response whatsoever. Given that I have done everything I could think of, I'm starting to worry a bit. What is happening and what should I do now?
  4. I thought I'd start a thread for us to update when we hear responses (good or not so good) from French MA and PhD programs. (If this already exists elsewhere, please let me know!) It's still a bit early for most institutions, but I know some are calling for interviews already and based on past years' threads it should ramp up soon! So where has everyone applied? Who have you heard from so far? Top choices? So excited to hear everyone's experiences. Thanks!
  5. After literally weeks of trying to concoct the perfect email to decline am offer to a school I REALLY liked, I finally hit send (and died a little inside). I was hoping for a response that didn't require follow-up, but her exact words were, "Hi LAS22--well I'm disappointed, obviously, but best wishes in your future studies! Are you going to another PhD program?" Ugh. Now I have to respond and I've been panicking over it for a week now... How do I respond?? Do I tell her what school I'm going to? Do I tell her why? Do I reiterate how difficult of a decision this was? I'm t
  6. Hey, Has anyone applied to McGill for a Masters in Sociology? Anyone have any ideas about when they will send out their responses?
  7. Hey guys! I have applied to several AuD programs and have yet to hear back from them. It's already been one month since I've applied and people are already getting interview invites from programs I applied to. Should I contact the schools or just wait for them to get back to me? This waiting period is so nerve racking!!
  8. Hello there, I am waiting to hear from the graduate schools in Statistics/Biostatistics for Fall 2012. I am not a high achiever. My undergraduate (major: Statistics) gpa is 3.59 and my graduate(MS in Math) gpa in 3.39, gre (750+490)...I have done research in statistics and working towards getting a paper published...I have "a little below expert" programming skills in R... I have applied to schools like UC-Riverside, Utah State University, University of Kansas, and George Washington. I was wondering if anyone could guide me through my chances of getting funded at any of the abov
  9. Hi ya'll! I'm trying to figure out how to start a critical response essay as the title says, BUT the questions are if the book lived up to my expectations or not. Seems like a basic response to me, but I still need the: problem/thesis, evidence, and point/conclusion. I'm thinking the thesis/problem should be "did this live up to my expectations?" Any ideas? I'm bugging out!

  11. Hi, I am a potential PhD student in CSE for Fall 2012. I've started writing to a few professors whose research coincide with my interests. It has been two days, and not having received any replies from any of the four professors, I'm starting to get a little anxious. Should I be? What is the typical response time for professors? And how long should I wait before sending a polite reminder?
  12. Hi, I recently emailed a professor to indicate interest in being a phd student under her and also listed my achievements, summary, etc. She replied saying that I should certainly apply to the phd program and that she will keep an eye put for my application. Also that I should remind her again in january, february 2012 about this. Is this a positive response or is she just being polite? Should I get my hopes up with this? Views, Comments?
