  1. “A picture is worth a thousand words”, a well-known adage that stands true through time. Even before we could speak, we used graphics to communicate. Today, we are surrounded by designs of all kinds- from the home screen on our mobile phones to the big billboards out on the streets, graphics are a timeless medium to communicate. As a school boy, I had always loved to sketch cartoon characters. A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering gave me exposure to machines of different shapes and sizes. I was intrigued by how design made even the most complex machines easy to use. These experiences
  2. Hi all! I'm starting to research MFA's for Graphic Design, and I'm super lost. Most advice articles treat MFA fields the same, which is super unhelpful (graphic design and ceramics? totally the same! biochemistry and physics? sure, same thing!). My portfolio isn't incredible, I didn't go to undergrad for gd or any sort of art (BBA in Marketing), and I'm working currently as a Marketing Assistant and Graphic Designer for a theater company. When looking at school rankings, i feel like there's a huge gap - either the top of the top (RISD, SCAD, Ivys) or your community college. It's really hard t
  3. Hello everyone, I have received an offer from Rhode island school of Design (Masters in Furniture Design) and from Royal College of Arts (Masters in Design Product). Both the college are well known for their quality of education in respective courses. Which one is better for an international student wanting to pursue a practical and exploratory course for masters and also intending to find a job in the city. Exposure wise I think the city of London would be better but RISD is also know for its workshop based curriculum. I would appreciate any kind of input or insight regarding t
  4. Hello all, Starting the forum a little early this year. May the MFA gods be with us!
  5. Hey everyone, I've been accepted into two programs, MassArt's Film/Video and RISD's Digital + Media program. I've been swayed by the so-called elitism of RISD but also by the students' ways of doing and their approaches to dense subject matter in the digital world. MassArt just feels good because the departments brand of teaching is something that I resonate with due to it being very similar to one of my favorite professors in undergrad. MassArt will be roughly $15-20k cheaper per year than RISD, all things considered. Location and housing is a huge factor
  6. Hey, Anyone here who has heard from RISD for the Masters in Industrial Design program for 2017 ? The application deadline was 10th January 2017.
  7. Hey Guys, I remember being in undergrad and sometimes feeling so distant from my peers because I was an international student. Well, here I am again on this voyage about to feel even weirder, this time as a grad student. I thought that we should have a space where we could be able to share experiences, answer questions, give advice, or just a space where you say what makes you feel ok about yourself. Good luck everyone! Disclaimer: I worked with International Services during my undergrad but this does not make me an immigration official. Although I can give my opinion on certain si
  8. Hey guys, Im applying to MFA in Design and wanted honest opinions. Im not a very good writer, never have been. Would love some quick suggestions, feedback. ___________________________________________________________________________________ “We are what our thoughts have made us; so take care about what you think. Words are secondary. Thoughts live; they travel far.” As a visual thinker and communicator, these words of Swami Vivekananda have guided me for the past ten years. I cannot resist seeking inspiration in anything that has been beautifully des
  9. I am curious as to why people choose the programs they chose. What are the strengths and offerings of each program that makes them so attractive to you? One thing in my research I have a tuff time finding out is why people are applying to the programs they are applying to. For instance, I want to apply to Columbia because of their faculty mentorship to students. Each student are teamed up with 2 mentors who regularly visit your studio, and go onto outings together with. A friend of mine who attended the program even curated a show with one of her mentors. For RISD, I have read that they foc
  10. Hi, I'm currently in the third and final year of my Bachelor's Degree in something totally unrelated to Graphic Design, in India. I don't want to do anything related to my Bachelors in the future and want to do something related to Graphic Design/Illustration after I graduate. I've always been into art and design since a child and I was seriously considering Graphic Design in school. I even got accepted at an Art School with a Foundation year but I chose to stay in India as I got into one of the best colleges in Liberal Arts here. Even now, I find myself doodling in class all the time, ha
  11. I am pretty new to this forum, so forgive me if this question has been asked repeatedly. I am in the process of researching mfa programs for photography (starting Fall 2012). Does anyone have any advice as to what programs are good "fall backs". I am currently thinking about applying to 4 top tier schools, and 2 fall back schools. The 4 I know I want to apply to are Yale, SAIC, RISD, and CalArts. Also, any advice about interviews? (assuming I make the cut! haha)
