  1. Background: I'm still waiting to hear back from a few UCs (davis and irvine) that I applied to. I've seen cases where they don't send out offers until May. I've gotten an offer of admission from another school (deadline to accept is April 15). Question: Does anyone know whether it's possible/alright to accept the offer of admission and then change my mind if I hear back positively from those UCs? It's not an ideal situation, but I don't believe accepting an offer (especially for a master's program) is legally binding... That said, I'm not too happy with how the U
  2. How is the application reviewed in the interview phase of EECS MS/PhD at UC Berkeley? If interviewed and accepted into the program, would the interviewer (by default) be the PhD supervisor? Or, is the student first accepted into the program and needs to find a research supervisor later? If the students are first accepted into the program and not by a specific advisor, how would funding be handled?
  3. My GPA overall is a 3.1, with a 3.7 during community college but during my last 2 years of college at my four year undergrad (I am studying abroad at the current moment in a "fifth year") I received a 2.49 GPA because I was beginning recovery from addiction and a dual diagnosis. I want to be a social worker to do marco and policy work advocating for populations in poverty and with high rates of mental disorders/substance abuse issues. I have 2 years of experience being an activist of a Chicano student organization (I am personally Filipino but they are open to allies) along with 2 years o
  4. Is it top 10, top 20, top 30? Especially relative to places like Berkeley, MIT, Chicago. I was recently accepted to UCI's anthropology PhD program with full funding (I will research medical anthropology and STS), and I was wondering what the program's reputation is in that field, especially on the R1 academic job market? Their recent PhD's don't do *too* great at getting R1 positions, though the faculty are amazing, so I'm just curious.
  5. I started a facebook page for anyone interested in the UC or CSU MSW programs. The purpose of the page is to provide another outlet for those of us anxiously awaiting news about admission to talk, and support each other. In addition, this page is for anyone who is interested in these MSW programs at any stage of the process from just being curious about the process or wanting to learn more, to those who have graduated and beyond. The group is open to all, so please join and say hi! The group is called : UC and CSU MSW Applicant Resource and Support Group
  6. Just wondering if anyone else who has applied to UC has heard anything back yet?
  7. Hello, I'm in the middle of the application process to several UC PhD programs in social psychology and I'm having a hard time with the personal history statement. I've already written my statement of purpose, but I'm really struggling with the personal history statement because I'm having difficulties organizing it and figuring out how to fit everything in that the prompt asks for. I'd really appreciate it if anyone knew where I can find sample personal history statements or if anyone is willing to share their own statements. Either will be fine, I'd just appreciate any direction anyone
  8. The following is the prompt of Personal History Statement of UC Berkeley: Please describe how your personal background and experiences influenced your decision to pursue a graduate degree. In this section, you may also include any relevant information on the following: How you have overcome barriers to access higher education How you have come to understand the barriers faced by others Your academic service to advance equitable access to higher education for women, racial minorities and individuals from other groups that have been historically underrepresented in higher
  9. Here is the scenario I'm trying to work out in my head... I'm applying to like 5 CSUs for their MSW programs, all programs have an application period from October to late January. Notifications are often on a rolling basis, meaning you apply early you hear back early. You also have an advantage by applying early because there are more open spots and it sounds like it becomes more competitive the closer to the deadline admission notification goes. Some people hear back as early as February, many hear back in March. All of the MSW grad programs have a time limit to accept, usually betw
  10. Hey, so I've been admitted to UBC, Texas A&M and UC, Irvine for their grad programs in chemistry. I'm more than confused with where to go. By ranking UBC is higher but only by a bit. All the schools have professors that I'm interested in and have been corresponding. The other major difference is the stipend, UBC offers $21000+one time 2000. A&M 24000, UCI 29500. Which school is the best place all around? When it comes to living and work. P. S. I'm an international student so US or Canada will be a new experience to me. And I'm mostly interested in inorganic chem
  11. Hey fellas, How's it goin' for ya? 12. I am very happy to be going to UC's program in the fall and I'm looking for anyone else who got in. I started a Facebook page ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/1511347992243552/ ) and I'm hoping to get to talk to some of you here soon!
  13. Hi Everyone, I just wanted to make a thread regarding the Chancellor's Fellowship that is offered at the UC schools. When I was accepted into UCSB, I was informed that I was nominated for the Chancellor's Fellowship, which is a central university allocated fellowship. I tried looking online for information regarding the fellowship and the process of receiving it, but couldn't find much, so I wanted to share the information that I have now that I received it. Congrats and goodluck if you're in this situation! I'd like to preface that this information is not verified as being true, but
  14. I'm still waiting to hear from University of Illinois-Chicago, and I haven't seen much activity lately on the CJ threads. I'm hoping others are still waiting to hear from some schools, maybe even UIC, and we can commiserate together. Or if you've heard something or I've heard something we can come here instead of page through 15 pages or more of the other threads.
  15. Unusual background: I have a BA in Music from a top liberal arts college (2005) and intend to get into research on astrobiology and the origin of life. I was a bio minor so right now I'm loading up the other course requirements I need to apply to grad school. Of course most programs won't look at an application from a BA Music with no research experience so I'm angling for CSU East Bay's Biotechnology Certificate Program (BCP), which offers the coursework for an MS Biology with an option for thesis research upon completion. I have been working in science fields and am aggressively looking for
  16. I applied to the Spring 2017 Masters in Public Health with a concentration on policy and management, online version so no SOPHAS. Was wondering if anone else has heard back. I check my status twice a day :/.
  17. Hi Everyone, So I got acceptances from both USC and UCSD for my terminal MSEE, specializing in signal and image processing, and I am having a tough time making this choice. 1. EDUCATION QUALITY: Both schools seem to be about equal in terms of the quality of the education so far as I can tell from other people and ratings and whatnot. 2. TUITION: USC is about $40000 more in total than UCSD, which makes it seem like a no brainer for UCSD. HOWEVER, I am wondering what is the possibility of being able to get involved as a GSR (Graduate Student Researcher) or TA (Teaching Assistant)
  18. Hey! I am attending the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine PhD program this fall. Anyone else attending UC?
  19. Hi, I'm in unfamiliar and uncommon territory, so will appreciate any insights! 2011 graduate with a BS Industrial and Systems Engineering, 3.23/4.00. School is Top 10 ISE / Top 15 Undergrad Eng Overall. 158V/160Q GRE (Analytical TBD) 3 good recommendations 5 years work experience, 2.5 with Big 4 accounting firm as IT audit consultant, and 2.5 with Top 5 defense contractor as an industrial engineer I'm looking at applying to California schools (in-state) to pursue a Master's in Electrical Engineering... What kind of chances do I have (in no particular order) with:
  20. Hey guys, I have been admitted to my two top BME programs so far: MEng at Duke University (cost is ~40k for 18 months) M.S. at UC Davis with funding and stipend (24 months) I'm about 99% sure I don't want to get a PhD so I plan on going into the industry right away. I have done quite a bit of research but don't want to conduct research long-term (I'd rather go into management/consulting). My dilemma is that Duke is a much higher ranked school in terms of their BME program than UC Davis (4th vs 22nd). I'm not sure if this includes the MEng program since it is run by Duke Grad
  21. I applied for Fall 2012, and it is one of my top two choices. I've checked the results from previous years, and it seems like they usually send out acceptances AND rejections by now... I know that there are about 4 applicants to this program each year (and at this point I've probably been rejected)...but if anyone has heard anything, please let me know!
  22. What are the duties of a GSR at a UC (in the humanities/social sciences)? I can't seem to find an answer to that.
