  1. I got accepted into both the MS. Data Science program at the University of Virginia and the MS Analytics program at NC State. Both are 10 months and are rigorous. NCSU's program is more established, but UVA's brand name seems bigger and more focused on emerging tech like R. I hear NCSU is primarily focused on SAS training. Both seem good job opportunity wise, UVA has a 100% employment rate with good companies and NCSU is up there as well, and I'm international so job opportunities after graduating is important to me. Any thoughts on both programs? How are they? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
  2. Hi I have received funded admissions to the Civil Engineering Master's program at UVa, UIUC, and Virginia Tech. In terms of research interest match between me and the supporting faculty, I would rank them like this: UVa(Best), VT, UIUC (Good match but not great). The faculty member who has chosen to support my admission at UIUC wasn't my top pick at the department so it has become a bit challenging for me to choose UIUC. In terms department reputation usually, UIUC is the most reputable and UVa the least. Given this is a master's program, I might do my Ph.D. studies at another university based on where my research would lead me, so I want to consider the impact of choosing a well-respected program on opening up my options for my Ph.D. Simply put, my question is: How much weight should I give to University vs. the match in research interest with the supporting faculty for choosing the program that I will attend? Sincerely,
  3. I am still waiting on decisions for Baylor, University of Virginia, University of Texas-Dallas, and Texas State. Is anyone else still waiting on any of these schools?
  4. I have been accepted to both UVA and UGA for their Microbiology PhD programs and I have no idea how I'm going to decide. I enjoyed my visits to both schools and was really impressed by the research and PIs. Logistically: UVA (Charlottesville, VA) - offering $30,500 annual stipend, it's a umbrella program within the medical school, great faculty and research going on there, facilities are really nice, I have family in the area, no TA requirement. UGA (Athens, GA) - offering $27,000 annual stipend, stand alone microbiology department within the college of arts and sciences, also really friendly/supportive PIs, facilities aren't as nice as UVA, I have friends in the area, has a TA requirement (2 semesters). I'm really torn and not sure how I'm going to begin deciding. I'm not really interested in a career in academia. I'm leaning towards staying in research perhaps in industry or government research, but I'm not super clear on my career path right now. Opinions? Pro/cons? Thank you!!

    UVA 2017

Searched and searched, but couldn't find one for UVA. Any other incoming graduate students here? I'm in Religious Studies.
  6. Hello Everyone. I'm an Economics undergraduate student at Università Bocconi. (going on exchange at the University of Virginia on spring 2018). My GPA is 26,7/30, but 27,5 if we concentrate on quantitative/economics subjects. I have taken the GRE (164Q, 163V, 3AW). I have sincerely outstanding academic refererences and I think I have written a very well balanced personal statement. No working experience, good IELTS and I speak fluently french, too. I know that at LSE they look a lot at the average, and that is my flaw together with the 3 at the GRE AW (however, I got 93% on verbal.) Do you think I stand any chance to be admitted to LSE's MSc in Economics and Philosophy? Talking aboutother programs, I'm lookingf at UCL and Pompeu Fabra pure economics. Any hint on these too? Thanks
  7. Hi! I'm an out-of-field SLP applicant and I'm having a tough time deciding between schools. I've been accepted to both UVA and Syracuse University and I keep wobbling between them. They're both really great programs (as far as I can tell) and both would mean myself and my husband moving from the DC area, but we're prepared for that. I'm wondering if anyone could shed light on what being in either program would actually be like, or if anyone has been accepted to one or both schools and why they did or did not accept them. Also - I've been out of school for several years, so any advice from folks who went back to school after a period of time would be very welcome
  8. Hi all, Thanks in advance for your input. I could really use it! I've been accepted to the following schools for the Master of Public Policy. I intend to study education policy. UVA (with sizable scholarship) Berkeley (no scholarship) Columbia (1/4 scholarship) Duke (about 1/2 scholarship) UChicago (about 1/4 scholarship, but could change) Michigan (about 1/3 scholarship, but could change) Carnegie Mellon (about 3/4 scholarship) Vanderbilt (very small scholarship) I was also waitlisted at HKS. Because of financial concerns, I'm prioritizing UVA, Duke, UChicago, Michigan, and Carnegie Mellon. However, Berkeley's got such a wonderful reputation... What are your thoughts?
  9. Anyone in any of the biology/biomedical graduate programs at these universities or with any insight about these institutes? I am an international so it's hard to know how these schools are viewed in the US. Rankings-wise they all seem to be mid-tier, with decent reputations. Any other insights on biotech industry and living standards in the surrounding areas would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance.
  10. I'm a prospective applicant to the PhD program in the Department of Political Science at UVa. My focus is in the IPE arena, and I'm interested in working with Herman Schwartz or Sonal Pandya. I'd like to hear from a current student or recent graduate of the program about funding opportunities, RA, TA, and fellowship opportunities within the Department, student engagement with faculty, and perceptions of faculty overall. Is the general feeling that PhD students are well supported throughout their time at UVa? Side-comments about living in Charlottesville are also appreciated! Please feel free to PM me if preferred.
  11. Hey guys, thought I'd start an official thread for everyone who's been accepted to UVA's program for Fall 2016 since unofficial acceptances came out tonight! Congrats to everyone! Does anyone know if there's a facebook page yet?
  12. Hey! Anyone else admitted to UVA going to the department visit days Feb 28 - March 1? Looking forward to meeting people!
  13. Does anyone have any insight into UVA/when they will be sending out acceptances/so on? I haven't contacted them but maybe some of you have?
