My department has added 3 new courses in the vicinity of my area but I have been told by another grad student that I am unlikely to be allowed to audit an additional course. Still no idea what to do.

How rare are classes that are within the vicinity of your area? How rare are your required courses?

I’d say courses in my area are offered less frequently, but the question then is which to choose. In my undergrad we didn’t have elective courses at all so this is a new experience for me.

Apartment hunting from a distance is SO hard. 😕I know I'm going to find something/figure something out, but that doesn't mean I'm not stressed af.

Totally feel this but everything will fall into place, I promise. For me it all worked itself out when I was in the Dallas airport heading home and feeling so defeated for not finding anything. I’ve got my fingers crossed you’ll have the perfect spot soon.

Thanks for the encouragement ☺️ I'm hopeful for sure! I know it'll all work out in the end.

it was so hard hunting from afar! i only got lucky because of my roommate being in the area beforehand. i still had to couch surf/short term with people before our lease started. good luck to you :)

my place isn't close to campus at all but I've made acquaintances with people who have similar commutes to hyde park from my area so i feel better. still saying it's extra reading time and keeps me close to work/is bonkers cheap for our area. chicago on the whole is still amazing.

yes!!! it’s the biggest relief to feel like I finally have things sliding into place. I’m not super into sports but I feel like I have to go to at least one basketball game just to say I did haha

Anyone else have orientations coming up? I have an all day one with the graduate program on Tuesday and a couple hours long one with the English department a few days later. And then classes start on the 26th! Are y’all freaking out yet???

I moved into my house on Saturday and my first orientation is this Wednesday!! I’m so excited. Class on the 26th for me too. I’m more excited than nervous but that might change as I’m walking up to the building haha!

Glad to see this thread still getting updated omg

I'm still a ways away from UC Irvine starting but that September 26th start date is creeping up quick. I have two orientations next September (School of Humanities + Campuswide) and then a beginning of the year party.

Also have an apartment, about to pick up keys in a few weeks' time and hopefully settle in by mid-September.

It's a little bit surreal to call myself graduate student still (much less having a new institutional affiliation). I've been busying myself with MLA database deep dives as well as reading some books that are long overdue for me to read (all this time my UG library would have a full PDF of Cruising Utopia digitally lol).

I don't have the jitters quite yet, but tbh once it hits September it'll definitely sink in for me.

So excited for all of you! :D

i am so ready to be back in school. restaurant life 50 hours a week wears real thin quickly. but right now i'm reading john caputo's "against ethics" and judith butler's "frames of war" and having a good time with those.

I’m super excited too! But scared also. It’s strange for me to be scared in an academic setting and yet there it is. I’m sure after my first week I’ll feel better. It’s hard not know exactly what I’m in for.

Congrats on your house! Please post or reach out after your first day! I’m excited to see how us 2018 applicants get along.

Yes exactly! I feel the same way. I think once I have a sense of the territory I’ll feel better.

Same to you, truly!!! I hope some of us stick around and keep each other updated—I really am invested in your grad school journey.
