UT Austin - Part-Time Jobs

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I've committed to UT Austin's PhD program in English (yay!), and I am so excited to head down in August. Top of mind right now is finding and securing housing, and with that, concerns about budget/affordability. The program funding is modest at best, so I know that I'll have to find some other work to supplement my stipend. I'm wondering if anyone can offer suggestions about reasonable part-time or contract work for grad students? I know it's suggested we don't devote too much time to other work, as coursework and TA'ing already demand a lot and the priority, but this is more of a need than a choice... I've obviously thought about tutoring (any good programs/companies to look at in particular)? I am also leaving in job in non-profit development, so some kind of proposal and grant-writing would be really great. Any thoughts?

Congratulations on getting into the PhD in English! I just got into the Linguistics program at UT Austin, and I'm wondering the same thing - how to supplement my stipend 😅. As an international applicant I feel it would be harder to find jobs due to restrictions which I think you don't have? I hope it works out and you find a good part time job.

I'm right there with both of you. Going to UT Austin in SPED. I've been trying to find online jobs, as I feel they would be more flexible with hours. I've looked into VIP kids (https://www.vipkidteachers.com/) as I have a teaching background. I'm just a little worried that it's what people sign up for, so it's not guaranteed $$ each week.

Any other work from home options people have?

I just got hired at VIP Kids (also recently admitted into UT Austin's comp lit PhD program and stressing about money). I haven't taken advantage of VIP Kids yet as I'm in the middle of two other jobs. There are a lot of blogs addressing income and hours through the company--it seems you really can earn a reliable income, especially in the summer. I will say the hiring process is intense, but my understanding is that the payoff is worth it.

I just want to add a note here that it seems that UT-Austin wants outside employment to be reported to them prior to accepting the position. The documents can be found here. I'd double-check with individual departments to make sure everything is good to go because there are some contracts which prohibit outside work during the school year or require permission from the department. Best of luck to everyone.
