Interest in Library Science: MLIS first or straight to PhD?

Recommended Posts

Hi, everyone.

I'm a former high school English teacher, and I was thinking of going back to school for library science. I would love to become an academic librarian at a university, specializing in English literature. I already have a Master of Arts in English.

A part of me wants to go for the PhD in Library Science; it's always been a personal goal of mine to pursue a doctorate. I'm just not sure if I should get an MLIS first, especially because I already have a Master's degree. I just know that I need to have an MLIS if I want to become a librarian.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Late, but it really depends. Some schools (ie: UCLA off the top of my head) specifically want you to have an MLIS and will ask you to do additional coursework equivalent to MLIS competencies if you don't have it.
